We Mavericks is an Australian folk duo made up of Victoria Vigenser and Lindsay Martin. They began when the two played a house concert together in the tiny town of Bundanoon, NSW, to a room full of friends, and they haven't stopped since.
Victoria Vigenser sings with powerhouse vocals and driving guitar. Lindsay Martin plays violin and mandolin, and he is also an independent recording engineer and producer. He comes from Tumut in the Snowy Valleys region of NSW and was classically trained from the age of seven. They are occasionally joined by cellist Rachel Johnston and multi-instrumentalist Trent Arkleysmith.
Their sound moves between acoustic pop, alt-country and contemporary folk, with lush harmonies, cinematic strings, driving rhythms and a touch of film-score drama. Their sets run from soaring anthems to fragile stillness, with plenty of stage banter. The songs are often dark, about humanity and hope. They describe themselves as a folk act, though singles from their album Heart of Silver have been picked up by Australian country media, including Country Music TV, ABC Country and ABC's Saturday Night Country.
The duo has been twice nominated for Best Folk Artist (Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa) at the Aotearoa Music Awards and twice for Best Contemporary Duo/Group/Ensemble at the Australian Folk Music Awards. They were Spotlight Showcase Artists at Folk Alliance International and received Australia's Troubadour Foundation Award. They have played folk festivals across Australia, the UK and New Zealand, and reviewers in the UK, Germany and New Zealand have praised them. Fatea Records called their work "an undoubted masterclass in music delivery and songwriting."
Worth Knowing
We Mavericks is an Australian folk duo made up of Victoria Vigenser and Lindsay Martin, and the act began when the two played a house concert together in the tiny town of Bundanoon, NSW, to a room of friends. Vigenser sings with powerhouse vocals and drives the sound on guitar, while Martin plays violin and mandolin and works as an independent recording engineer and producer, which gives the duo a studio-minded approach to arrangement. Their sound sits where acoustic pop, alt-country and contemporary folk meet, and listeners tend to be drawn to the lush harmonies and cinematic strings that sit alongside driving rhythms. Peers have taken notice: the duo has been twice nominated for Best Folk Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards and twice for Best Contemporary Duo/Group/Ensemble at the Australian Folk Music Awards. Singles from the album Heart of Silver were picked up by Australian country media, including Country Music TV, ABC Country and ABC’s Saturday Night Country, which is an unusual crossover for a self-described folk act. Their streaming footprint is still small, with about 340 Spotify followers, so the case for them rests mostly on the songs and the live sets.
