Amy MacClain is a singer-songwriter, coach and facilitator who calls herself a social storyteller. She uses the medicine of songs to narrate the healing journey. "Music is medicine" is the idea behind her music, coaching and courses. They aim to help people find the inner spark that shows their purpose, and to heal from oppression and depression together, because she sees personal and collective trauma as woven together.
Her sound is vulnerable and real. She describes it as the Indigo Girls and India Arie sitting down with Sheryl Crow and Trevor Hall. Her albums include The Great Mystery, her second full-length record, with songs she describes as channeled in different healing environments. Prayer for Loving Kindness was written and recorded during the first of a three-year healing journey, and she calls it a declaration of her life's work. In 2023 she released a new song every week for a year as a practice of devotion and trust, which became the 50@50 project. Earlier, she made music as the duo MacClain & Cole, whose album Step Into Now drew praise from George Daly, former head of A&R at BMG/Zoo, Atlantic and Elektra Records.
Alongside the music, Amy offers an eight-week online course, Light Your Spark, which she likens to The Artist's Way done with music instead of morning pages. She also offers one-to-one coaching, including coaching white folx to dismantle systemic oppression. Through Courageous Consulting she provides strategy, training and curriculum design that help organizations embody their values, with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
Worth Knowing
Amy MacClain is a singer-songwriter, coach and facilitator who calls herself a social storyteller, and her core premise is that music is medicine. That premise runs through her albums, her one-to-one coaching and her courses, with the stated aim of helping people find the inner spark that points toward their purpose. What sets her apart is that she treats personal and collective trauma as woven together, so her songs and coaching address depression and oppression in the same frame rather than as separate projects. Through Courageous Consulting she also works with organizations on strategy, training and curriculum design around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Her music is vulnerable and real, and she places it between the Indigo Girls and India Arie on one side and Sheryl Crow and Trevor Hall on the other. Listeners who care about her tend to be drawn to the combination of confessional singer-songwriter craft and explicit social framing, which is less common in wellness-oriented music.
