Sharon Gannon

Yoga Teacher

Sharon Gannon is the co-founder of Jivamukti Yoga, a method that redefined yoga practice in the United States by insisting that physical postures cannot be separated from ethical living, devotional practice, and social justice. Born in Washington state, Gannon came to yoga through the New York City arts scene in the 1980s, where she worked as a dancer, musician, and avant-garde performer before studying with teachers including Swami Nirmalananda, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, and Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. In 1984, she and her partner David Life opened the first Jivamukti Yoga studio in the East Village, at a time when yoga in America was still largely taught in church basements and community centers.

Jivamukti Yoga distinguishes itself through five central tenets: ahimsa (nonviolence), bhakti (devotion), dhyana (meditation), nada (sacred sound), and shastra (study of scripture). Gannon's classes weave vinyasa sequencing with Sanskrit chanting, readings from the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, and a strict ethical commitment to veganism and animal rights. Where most Western yoga studios in the 1990s treated asana as exercise, Jivamukti treated it as one limb of a larger spiritual practice rooted in classical Indian tradition. The method became a bridge between the countercultural bohemianism of downtown New York and the ancient lineages of Ashtanga and Sivananda yoga.

Gannon has authored or co-authored multiple books on yoga philosophy and practice, including Jivamukti Yoga, Yoga and Vegetarianism, and The Art of Yoga. She has released spoken-word and chant albums, including the collection Sharanam, which pairs traditional Sanskrit mantras with contemporary music production. Her teaching materials often include recorded dharma talks that students use as soundtracks for home practice, a format that became a template for the modern yoga podcast and audio-class industry.

The Jivamukti method grew from a single East Village loft into a network of affiliated studios and teacher trainings on five continents. Gannon and Life trained thousands of yoga teachers through Jivamukti's 300-hour certification program, which became one of the most sought-after credentials in the profession. The original New York City flagship studio moved to Union Square in 1998 and became a cultural landmark, drawing celebrities, musicians, and serious practitioners alike. Gannon's influence extended beyond the mat: she has been a vocal advocate for animal liberation and environmentalism, integrating activism into the yoga curriculum at a time when most studios avoided overtly political content.

Media coverage of Gannon and Jivamukti has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, and Vogue. She has taught workshops and lectured at conferences and retreat centers internationally. In 2014, Gannon stepped back from the day-to-day management of the Jivamukti studio network to focus on her own practice and teaching. She currently leads teacher trainings, writes, and spends extended periods in India studying Sanskrit and Vedic texts.

For someone discovering Sharon Gannon today, her work offers a model of yoga as an integrated ethical practice, not simply a fitness regimen, grounded in scriptural study and inseparable from compassion for all living beings.

Worth Knowing

Questions

Sharon Gannon is the co-founder of Jivamukti Yoga, one of the most philosophically rigorous and socially engaged yoga lineages to emerge from the modern Western yoga movement. Rather than positioning yoga as merely a fitness or wellness practice, Gannon has spent decades articulating yoga as a liberation philosophy—one that demands ethical engagement with the world, particularly around animal welfare, environmental justice, and spiritual awakening. Students and practitioners follow her work because she refuses the common contemporary retreat into individualistic self-improvement; instead, she frames yoga as a path toward recognizing the interconnection of all beings and acting accordingly. Her influence extends beyond the yoga studio into the broader spiritual and activist communities, where she's recognized as a teacher who walks her philosophy rather than simply teaching it. For seekers serious about integrating practice with ethics and social responsibility, Gannon's work offers both theoretical depth and practical guidance.
