Known affectionately as "Michael Watsu", Michael Hallock is a Watsu therapist and a teacher of the Healing Dance form of aquatic bodywork. He approaches the therapy as an art form, and each session is an intuitive dance unfolding deeper connection with oneself. A pioneer of aquatic bodywork in Asia Pacific, he teaches internationally.
His path began with yoga. While teaching English in Granada, Spain, and struggling with anxiety, insomnia and chronic fatigue, he found that yoga quickly transformed his health and his experience of the world. In 1998 he left for India on a one-way ticket, and after searching for a teacher he found the teachings of Swami Satyananda. He spent the better part of three years at the Bihar School of Yoga Ashram, experiencing yoga as a way of life: self-awareness, service and devotion, through and beyond asana, pranayama and meditation. He came away with resilience, contentment, calm and the ability to relax deeply at any time.
In 1995 he first experienced aquatic bodywork and discovered a quality of presence and peace he had never known. It was, in his words, "love-at-first-float". He began teaching in 2000, and his classes were met with enthusiasm in retreats across Southeast Asia and Australia.
Over the years his work has included massage, yoga, optimal breathing, relaxation, meditation, mindfulness, self-acupressure, ecstatic dance, chi nei tsang abdominal massage, energy healing, kirtan and aquatic bodywork. Today he leads courses, trainings and transformational retreats around one question: how can we cultivate peace and joy in ourselves, and share that with the world?
Worth Knowing
Michael Hallock, affectionately known as "Michael Watsu" in aquatic bodywork communities, is a Watsu therapist, Healing Dance instructor, and yoga teacher who has spent decades cultivating and teaching practices centered on the cultivation of peace and joy—both personally and as something to share outward. His reputation rests not on flashy credentials but on a specific journey: he arrived in India on a one-way ticket in 1998, found Swami Satyananda and the Bihar School of Yoga Ashram, spent roughly three years there, and returned with a resilience and capacity for deep relaxation that transformed his approach to helping others. What distinguishes him from many wellness practitioners is his insistence on treating therapy as an art form—each Watsu or Healing Dance session is framed as an intuitive dance unfolding in real time, not a protocol executed. He pioneered the teaching of aquatic bodywork in Asia Pacific starting around 2000, and his international presence since then reflects both his skill and his philosophical integration of yoga, meditation, energy work, and somatic practice into a coherent vision. People care about his work because he's built a genuinely alternative approach to healing that refuses the clinical-therapeutic split: his sessions are simultaneously physically healing and spiritually attuned.
