1440 Multiversity opens with a question that invites us inward: Who are we? What are we like? In just over a minute, the organization presents itself not through a mission statement but through a visual and sonic landscape—music, light, and imagery that suggest something about the space itself before any words can explain it.
1440 Multiversity, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, functions as a retreat center and educational institution dedicated to contemplative practices, dharma teaching, and integrated learning. The center brings together teachers, artists, and seekers across traditions—from Buddhism and yoga to music, philosophy, and social innovation. Rather than prescribing a single path, 1440 holds the assumption that wisdom is multifaceted and that genuine transformation often emerges at the intersection of different lineages and ways of knowing.
The organization's name itself—"1440"—refers to the number of minutes in a day, suggesting that every moment holds potential for awakening and practice. This reflects a core philosophy: spiritual development isn't sequestered in retreat settings alone. It's woven into how we move through ordinary time.
The brief welcome video operates less as explanation and more as invitation. By foregrounding aesthetic experience—the quality of sound, the pacing of imagery—over descriptive language, 1440 communicates something essential about its approach: direct experience precedes doctrine. You're invited to watch, to sense, to arrive at your own understanding of who gathers there and why.
