Sky Cowans, a wellness explorer and founder of the Sky Life vibe tribe, details why he continues practicing the Wim Hof Method—a system of breathing exercises, cold exposure, and meditation—nearly a year after training with Iceman Wim Hof in Poland for the Yes Theory documentary "Frozen Alive." The practice has delivered measurable physical benefits (lowered inflammation markers, strengthened immunity, accelerated muscle recovery) and profound psychological gains: increased mental strength, ability to find peace amid discomfort, and a concrete training ground for responding to life's inevitable pain with presence rather than reactivity. Cowans frames the ice bath as a teacher—a bounded environment where he learns to meet adversity with calm, a skill that transfers to real-world hardship.

What Happened During the Frozen Alive Documentary?

In January 2019, Cowans traveled to Poland to film the Yes Theory documentary "Frozen Alive," where he underwent extreme cold training with Wim Hof himself. That week became a turning point. "It was one of the most physically and mentally challenging things I've ever done," Cowans recalls. The experience wasn't a one-time stunt; it catalyzed a lasting commitment to the method. Nearly one year later, he confirms: "The Wim Hof Method and cold therapy in general have become critical parts of my life for both my physical and mental health."

How Does the Wim Hof Breathing Technique Work?

The Wim Hof Method consists of three pillars: breathwork, cold exposure, and meditation/concentration practices. The breathing component is designed to manipulate the body's physiology in measurable ways. As Cowans explains, "Physically the Wim Hof breathing method is designed to increase oxygen in the body and decrease carbon dioxide thereby increasing the amount of ATP in the cells."

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the cellular energy currency: molecules created in the mitochondria responsible for transporting and storing energy. By increasing ATP production, breathwork allows energy to move more quickly and efficiently through the body and brain. This isn't mystical—it's biochemistry. The breathing session also serves a practical purpose before cold immersion: it mentally prepares the practitioner and gives them conscious control of their breath, which is essential for remaining calm once submerged in ice.

Why Is Gradual Cold Exposure Important?

Cold therapy doesn't mean jumping into a frozen lake unprepared. The Wim Hof Method emphasizes gradual cold exposure to acclimate the nervous system rather than shock it. Cowans describes a typical gathering at his friend Jarrod's house in the Hollywood Hills, where beginners are limited to one minute in an ice bath during their first attempt. Jarrod guides participants through deep breathing and mental focus, coaching them to stay present. Cowans notes that when he first started, he could only tolerate two minutes; now he manages ten, not because the cold feels warm, but because his relationship to the discomfort has transformed.

What Are the Physical Health Benefits?

The immune and inflammatory effects are striking. Cowans reports: "I have not gotten sick once since starting cold therapy." The research backing this is robust. Cold therapy increases white blood cell production—immune cells that fight infection—and significantly reduces systemic inflammation, which underlies many chronic diseases. He also credits cold immersion with muscle recovery and repair, which is why professional athletes incorporate it into their training regimens.

When Cowans had his blood work done, his biomarker for inflammation registered at the lowest possible level. While he attributes this to overall diet and lifestyle, he emphasizes: "I strongly feel that incorporating cold therapy into my life has significantly contributed to that number being so low."

What Are the Mental and Emotional Benefits?

The physical gains pale beside the psychological shift. Cowans had been struggling with fear and avoidance before his first ice bath. Overcoming that resistance—and finishing the session alive and capable—created a feedback loop of self-efficacy. Every completion reinforced the belief that he could endure discomfort. "Every time I finish an ice bath I feel so overwhelmed with gratitude and just joy for life in general," he says.

But this joy isn't frivolous. It's the fruit of a deeper realization: your response to pain is yours to choose. As Cowans frames it, "Life is tough and pain and suffering are part of life they're part of being human it's our relationship to these emotions and how we react and respond that truly matters."

How Does Ice Become a Teacher for Life Resilience?

The ice bath is bounded suffering—voluntary, timed, survivable. It serves as a laboratory for practicing the mental skills needed when suffering arrives unbidden. Cowans states: "So when I get in the ice and I can find peace presents and even gratitude and joy in the midst of some real pain and discomfort I know that I can do the same when pain and discomfort show up in my life because I know that I get to decide how I react and respond."

This isn't toxic positivity or forced gratitude. It's the insight that while circumstances aren't always in your control, your inner posture toward them is. The more he practices choosing peace and presence in the ice, the more those qualities become his default response to life's inevitable hardships. "The more I choose peace presents gratitude enjoy no matter what the circumstances the more I attract those qualities back into my life," he reflects.

Why Is This Relevant to Millions of People?

Cowans notes that millions worldwide are using the Wim Hof Method to overcome physical and mental limitations. The question driving his continued practice isn't abstract: "How can something so uncomfortable generate such remarkable results and such a blissful feeling?" The answer lies in a fundamental law of human psychology—you grow by encountering resistance and persisting through it. The cold is merely the vehicle.

Watching first-timers like his friend Katie face her fear and complete an ice bath reinforced this for Cowans. He saw in her the same transformation he'd experienced: terror before, pride and gratitude after. "I absolutely loved witnessing so many young people decide to spend their Saturday challenging themselves and doing something so beneficial for the mind and body."

The Wim Hof Method works not because cold is special, but because it creates a reliable, repeatable situation in which you can practice choosing your response to discomfort. Over time, that practice rewires your default posture toward adversity itself.

Where to Go From Here

If you're drawn to the Wim Hof Method, start small. Explore the breathing techniques first; they require no special equipment and can be practiced at home. If cold exposure interests you, seek out guided sessions or workshops rather than attempting extreme cold alone. Cowans attended a workshop before beginning his practice. Consider finding a community—the accountability and social support of a gathering, like Jarrod's ice bath groups, can sustain the habit when motivation wanes. Finally, approach the practice with the mindset Cowans articulates: the goal is not to become superhuman or to dominate the cold, but to develop the mental skill of meeting discomfort with presence and choice.

[0:49] notifications for a new video every

[0:51] Thursday one of the most common

[0:54] questions I get asked all the time is

[0:56] this sky do you still do the wim HOF

[0:59] method more contacts in January of 2019

[1:02] I went to Poland for a week for the

[1:05] making of the yes theory documentary

[1:07] frozen alive where we train to become

[1:09] superhuman with the Iceman wim HOF

[1:13] himself if you have not already seen my

[1:15] other videos about wim HOF or the yes

[1:17] theory documentary then I highly

[1:19] recommend checking those out after you

[1:22] watch this because it will provide some

[1:23] context for this video I also have an

[1:26] entire video dedicated to the science

[1:28] and research behind the wim HOF method

[1:30] which will be really helpful for you to

[1:32] understand exactly what the wim HOF

[1:34] method is and how this works

[1:37] scientifically on the brain and body so

[1:39] to answer the question do I still do the

[1:42] wim HOF method nearly one year later the

[1:44] answer is yes the truth is that the wim

[1:47] HOF method and cold therapy in general

[1:49] have become critical parts of my life

[1:52] for both my physical and mental health

[1:55] and in this video I'm going to share why

[1:58] and to do so I'm gonna show you what I

[2:00] like to do for fun on a typical Saturday

[2:03] here in LA recently my friend Jared

[2:06] hosted a gathering of friends on a

[2:08] Saturday in Hollywood Hills to do

[2:10] breadth work and ice baths together and

[2:13] I dragged my friend Katie along so she

[2:15] could experience her first ice bath can

[2:18] you tell

[2:18] Energy's like oh god I'm like so nervous

[2:20] I can feel your yes

[2:23] I honestly hated the ice so much when I

[2:27] first started doing ice baths like I

[2:29] hated the cold every time I would go to

[2:31] do an ice bath I would get super nervous

[2:33] I'd be like oh my god I don't want to do

[2:35] this I don't want to do it I don't want

[2:37] to use but I'm gonna do it anyways and

[2:38] that's the keys first ice today it's

[3:02] gonna be so awesome yes we have the palm

[3:05] trees here I gotta do is look at these

[3:07] babies just gotta like be one with the

[3:09] palm trees you see specifically we're

[3:12] gonna be teaching what happens when your

[3:14] breath gets taken away and how to use

[3:16] breath to calm that response down I met

[3:19] Jarrod two years ago in 2017 the same

[3:22] day that I did my very first ice bath at

[3:25] the wim HOF method workshop in LA and I

[3:33] started attending breathwork and ice

[3:35] bath gatherings that Jarrod would host

[3:37] at his house today Jarrod has organized

[3:39] another wim HOF method gathering for a

[3:41] group of friends we would start with the

[3:43] breath work technique and then get

[3:45] everyone in the ice thank you guys all

[3:48] of you for showing up today please raise

[3:50] your many type of breathing intentional

[3:53] focus breathing practice

[3:59] awesome so what exactly is happening

[4:07] during this breathwork

[4:08] I explained this more in the other wim

[4:10] hof videos and in other breath work

[4:13] videos I've made in depth about what's

[4:15] really happening to the brain and body

[4:17] but here's the short story physically

[4:19] the wim hof breathing method is designed

[4:21] to increase oxygen in the body and

[4:23] decrease carbon dioxide thereby

[4:26] increasing the amount of ATP in the

[4:29] cells ATP stands for adenosine

[4:31] triphosphate which is created in the

[4:33] mitochondria and is responsible for

[4:35] transporting and storing energy by

[4:37] increasing ATP energy is more quickly

[4:40] and efficiently transferred to the rest

[4:42] of the body and brain

[4:45] [Music]

[4:53] besides all of the physical and

[4:56] emotional experiences that can happen

[4:58] during breathwork it's also extremely

[5:00] effective for preparing the body for the

[5:02] cold it also allows you to mentally

[5:05] prepare and gain control of your breath

[5:08] which is definitely necessary for being

[5:10] able to withstand the ice so after our

[5:37] breathing session it was time to get in

[5:40] the ice right now I know you're assuming

[5:42] like oh this is so crazy and random and

[5:44] once you get out of the ice bat you're

[5:46] gonna do this and this pumps up a lot of

[5:48] blood all throughout your body

[5:53] a key component of the wim HOF method is

[6:00] gradual cold exposure you don't want to

[6:02] shock the body so it's important to ease

[6:05] in Jarrod made sure that anyone whose

[6:07] first time it was doing an ice bath was

[6:09] limited to one minute each Jarrod helped

[6:12] coach and guides each person in the ice

[6:14] through deep breathing and mental focus

[6:17] I remember how terrified I was before my

[6:28] first ice bath and as Katie was telling

[6:31] me how scared she was too I could

[6:33] totally empathize with that but she got

[6:36] right in there she faced her fear and

[6:38] she absolutely crushed it I was so proud

[6:41] of her I was like yes Katie get it get

[6:44] it girl you are a star you're so strong

[6:48] [Music]

[6:51] and I just loved witnessing her and the

[6:54] other people there overcoming that fear

[7:01] [Applause]

[7:15] I absolutely loved witnessing so many

[7:19] young people decide to spend their

[7:21] Saturday challenging themselves and

[7:23] doing something so beneficial for the

[7:25] mind and body it's colder colder

[7:31] everyone was so supportive and great at

[7:34] holding down a safe space for people to

[7:37] take on this challenge

[7:38] [Applause]

[7:56] [Applause]

[8:17] so physically we know that cold therapy

[8:20] has all kinds of benefits I have not

[8:23] gotten sick once since starting cold

[8:25] therapy and what we know from the

[8:27] research is that cold therapy not only

[8:30] increases white blood cells which help

[8:33] fight infection but it also

[8:35] significantly reduces inflammation in

[8:38] the body which is the root cause of so

[8:40] many diseases cold therapy also helps

[8:43] with muscle recovery and repair which is

[8:45] why you see so many pro athletes having

[8:48] this included in their training and

[8:50] recovery programs I recently had my

[8:53] blood work done and my bio marker for

[8:55] inflammation was literally the lowest it

[8:58] could be I do attribute that to a

[9:00] healthy diet and lifestyle but I

[9:02] strongly feel that incorporating cold

[9:05] therapy into my life has significantly

[9:08] contributed to that number being so low

[9:10] besides the clear physical benefits of

[9:13] cold therapy they're real reason this

[9:16] has become such an integral part of my

[9:18] life is because of the mental benefits I

[9:22] experienced from me when I first started

[9:24] doing ice baths I could only do two

[9:27] minutes and it was so challenging for me

[9:33] but every time I would do it and

[9:36] overcome the limitations of my own mind

[9:38] I would feel incredible and now I can do

[9:42] ten minutes in the ice bath and it's not

[9:44] that I don't feel too cold anymore

[9:46] because I definitely do it's still

[9:48] challenging but it's far less

[9:49] challenging than it once was

[9:57] [Applause]

[10:00] and every time I finish an ice bath

[10:03] I feel so overwhelmed with gratitude and

[10:07] just joy for life in general only way to

[10:15] get hi guys

[10:15] I squid but this isn't just me this

[10:19] experience is happening for millions of

[10:22] people all over the world who are using

[10:24] this as a tool to overcome physical and

[10:28] mental limitations how can something so

[10:30] uncomfortable generate such remarkable

[10:33] results and such a blissful feeling for

[10:37] me the wim HOF method is one thing in my

[10:40] life that makes me stronger

[10:42] my mental strength has dramatically

[10:44] improved since incorporating breathwork

[10:47] and ice baths regularly into my life to

[10:50] me the ice is a teacher and it's

[10:52] training for life life is tough and pain

[10:56] and suffering are part of life they're

[10:58] part of being human it's our

[11:00] relationship to these emotions and how

[11:02] we react and respond that truly matters

[11:06] so when I get in the ice and I can find

[11:08] peace presents and even gratitude and

[11:12] joy in the midst of some real pain and

[11:15] discomfort I know that I can do the same

[11:18] when pain and discomfort show up in my

[11:21] life because I know that I get to decide

[11:24] how I react and respond and the more I

[11:26] choose peace presents gratitude enjoy no

[11:30] matter what the circumstances the more I

[11:33] attract those qualities back into my

[11:35] life because it's easy to be happy and

[11:38] joyful when everything's going great

[11:39] it's not as easy when things are going

[11:42] to [ __ ] but if we can flip our mindset

[11:44] in those moments then that is how we

[11:46] create change in our lives and that is

[11:49] why I still do the wim HOF method I'm

[11:52] not trying to tell you that you need to

[11:54] do this or you should do this I'm simply

[11:57] sharing my experience and only if you

[11:59] feel like this is something that

[12:00] intuitively resonates with you then why

[12:03] not give it a shot the easiest way to

[12:05] get started is with cold showers this is

[12:07] something I do every morning

[12:09] on the cold water for 30 seconds and

[12:11] just breathe like that cold water hit

[12:15] your body and find your breath you're

[12:18] going to lose your breath but can you

[12:20] find it can you stay in it I know you

[12:23] can I want to thank you so much for

[12:25] watching and if this video is something

[12:27] you enjoyed and it resonated with you

[12:29] then please give it a big thumbs up and

[12:31] leave me a comment below and if you're

[12:33] not already subscribed to Sky life and

[12:36] definitely click the subscribe button

[12:37] and join our vibe track and if you do

[12:40] and you're excited about it then leave

[12:41] me a comment below so I can say hello

[12:43] and welcome you to our family and that

[12:46] is it for this week I want to thank you

[12:48] so much for watching and remember you

[12:50] have the power to thrive you have the

[12:53] power to live your best life ever we

[12:56] have the power play call people you got

[12:58] this I believe in you and I will see you

[13:01] next week bye

Yes, according to research cited by Cowans, cold therapy increases white blood cell production—immune cells that fight infection. Cowans reports not having gotten sick once since incorporating regular cold immersion into his routine. Cold exposure also significantly reduces systemic inflammation, which is implicated in many chronic diseases.
The Wim Hof breathing method increases oxygen and decreases carbon dioxide in the body, thereby increasing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in cells. ATP is the energy currency of the cell; by boosting it, breathwork allows energy to transfer more efficiently to the body and brain, and it also prepares the nervous system for cold exposure.
Cowans reports experiencing increased mental strength, improved ability to remain calm amid discomfort, and a baseline sense of gratitude and joy. The practice teaches you that your response to pain is within your control—a skill that transfers to real-world hardship. Over time, regularly choosing peace in the ice trains you to default to peace in life.
Beginners typically start with one minute in an ice bath. Cowans could only manage two minutes initially, but after consistent practice, he now tolerates ten minutes. Tolerance builds gradually; the cold doesn't feel warm, but your psychological relationship to the discomfort—and your ability to breathe through it—improves measurably.
Cowans' recent blood work showed his inflammation biomarker at the lowest possible level, which he attributes partly to cold therapy combined with diet and lifestyle. Research supports that cold exposure significantly reduces systemic inflammation, which is why athletes and health-focused individuals incorporate it into recovery regimens.
Yes, but it's best to start with guided breathwork and attend a workshop or group gathering for cold exposure. Cowans attended a Wim Hof workshop before beginning and now participates in regular ice bath sessions with friends. Beginning with short immersions (one minute) and gradually increasing duration minimizes shock and builds sustainable habit.
