Enlightened States in Turiya: Whatthe Fourth State Reveals

Oneness Movement

Turiya is the fourth state of consciousness—the witnessing awareness that exists beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Rather than a state you enter temporarily, turiya represents a stabilized dimension of consciousness where enlightened awareness operates. Stories of those who dwell in turiya reveal what happens when consciousness becomes anchored in this transcendent witness rather than identified with the mind's fluctuations. This talk explores what enlightened states look like when rooted in turiya, and how spiritual teachers describe the nature of awareness that has matured beyond ordinary consciousness.

What Is Turiya?

Turiya is not a new invention of modern spirituality—it is a classical framework in Advaita Vedanta and other non-dual traditions for understanding consciousness itself. The Sanskrit word literally means "the fourth," and it refers to the transcendent awareness that underlies the three familiar states of consciousness: waking (jagrat), dreaming (svapna), and deep sleep (sushupti).

Most people identify exclusively with the waking state, occasionally dipping into dreams at night and passing through dreamless sleep. But according to ancient wisdom traditions, there exists a fourth dimension of awareness that does not come and go. It is the eternal witness to all three states—the unchanging consciousness that observes waking experience, watches dreams arise and dissolve, and remains present even in the void of deep sleep.

Unlike the three states, turiya is not characterized by content or experience. It is not something you do or achieve. Rather, it is the ground of being itself—that which is aware of all experience but is not itself an experience. This distinction is crucial for understanding what enlightened states actually are.

How Does Consciousness Stabilize in Turiya?

For most human beings, consciousness is unstable. It rises and falls with mental activity. The mind generates thoughts, emotions, and sensations, and awareness gets pulled along, identifying with the mental content as if it were the self. This creates the illusion that "I" am the thinker, the dreamer, the experiencer.

Spiritual practice and grace gradually reveal that consciousness is not the same as mind. Meditation, self-inquiry, and contemplative disciplines create gaps in mental activity where the witness becomes more apparent. As these gaps expand and stabilize, awareness begins to rest in its own nature rather than constantly tracking the mind's movements.

When consciousness becomes anchored in turiya, it no longer merely touches this transcendent state in brief glimpses during meditation. Instead, it becomes the stable ground from which experience is perceived. The mind continues to function, thoughts still arise, but they are observed rather than identified with. This is sometimes called "sahaja samadhi"—natural, effortless absorption in the true nature of consciousness.

What Do Enlightened States in Turiya Look Like?

Stories of those who have stabilized in turiya reveal distinct qualities that differentiate enlightened consciousness from ordinary mind states. These individuals describe:

  • Unwavering presence—A continuous awareness that persists unchanged regardless of external circumstances. This presence does not depend on favorable conditions or positive experiences.
  • Witnessing without attachment—The ability to observe all mental and emotional content without being caught by it. Thoughts, feelings, and sensations arise and dissolve in consciousness like clouds moving through sky.
  • Absence of the sense of doership—Actions occur, responsibilities are met, but there is no central "I" that feels personally responsible for making them happen. Life unfolds with effortless flow.
  • Dissolution of the fear of death—Since identity is anchored in consciousness itself rather than the body-mind, mortality loses its existential sting. Death is recognized as one more experience arising in awareness, not an annihilation of the self.
  • Spontaneous compassion—Without ego's defensive contraction, there is natural responsiveness to suffering. The boundaries between self and other become transparent.

These qualities are not acquired like skills or possessions. They naturally emerge when consciousness recognizes itself as the unchanging witness rather than the changing content of experience.

The Difference Between Glimpses and Stabilization

Many spiritual practitioners have fleeting experiences of turiya—moments when the mind becomes very quiet, the sense of separation dissolves, and pure awareness reveals itself. These glimpses are valuable and point toward the truth. However, they differ fundamentally from abiding stabilization.

In a glimpse, consciousness tastes its true nature, but the habit patterns of identification with mind are still intact. When the meditation ends, ordinary consciousness resumes. The individual returns to their familiar sense of being a separate self in a world of separate objects.

Stabilization in turiya is different. It is not something that comes and goes. The fundamental orientation of consciousness shifts from the foreground of mind-activity to the background of witnessing awareness. Even during waking activity, during sleep, during all circumstances, that transparent awareness remains the ground.

Teachers who have stabilized in turiya often describe it as profoundly ordinary. There is no dramatic alteration to personality. They still eat, sleep, work, and interact with others. But the reference point has shifted entirely. They know themselves as consciousness itself—not as a person inhabiting consciousness.

Why Do Stories of Enlightened States Matter?

Stories of those dwelling in turiya serve multiple purposes on the spiritual path. First, they make the abstract concrete. Concepts like "witness consciousness" or "non-dual awareness" remain philosophical abstractions until someone describes what they actually taste like in lived experience. Authentic stories ground these teachings in reality.

Second, they point toward what is possible. If awakening were purely theoretical, with no actual examples of humans who have stabilized in it, faith in the possibility would weaken. But when a contemporary teacher describes how consciousness functions when rooted in turiya, it confirms that this is not mythology but an actual human potential.

Third, they help discern the real from the counterfeit. Not all altered states are turiya. Some are temporary expansions of consciousness within the realm of experience. Some are peak experiences that feel profound but remain within the gravitational pull of ego. Stories from authentic teachers help practitioners recognize the difference.

How Is Turiya Different From Peak Experiences?

Spiritual seekers sometimes confuse peak experiences with stabilization in turiya. Both involve shifts in consciousness and both can feel extraordinarily meaningful. But they are not the same.

A peak experience is typically an intense moment of expanded awareness—a sudden opening where separation dissolves, bliss flows, or insight strikes with force. These experiences arise and then recede. The nervous system returns to baseline. The mind resumes its habitual patterns. The individual is moved by the experience but not fundamentally changed by it.

Turiya, by contrast, is the stable ground beneath all experience. It is not intense or dramatic. It is subtle, clear, and ordinary. There is no special feeling about it because it is not a state of mind at all—it is the awareness in which all states arise. An individual stabilized in turiya might have peak experiences, but these come and go while turiya remains unmoved and unchanged.

Where to Go From Here

Understanding turiya intellectually is one thing; stabilizing consciousness in it is another. The knowledge that turiya exists, that it is our true nature, and that others have awakened to it can inspire and orient practice. But actual realization requires surrender to the process and alignment with teachings from those who have traveled this territory.

If this teaching resonates, inquiry into your own experience can begin immediately. Who is aware right now? What remains unchanged even as thoughts, emotions, and sensations change? Can you locate the witness? These simple questions, pursued with honest sincerity, can reveal what turiya truly is—not as a concept but as your own living reality.

Turiya is the fourth state of consciousness—the stable witness awareness that exists beyond waking, dreaming, and sleep. Unlike waking consciousness, which is constantly pulled by mental content and ego, turiya is the unchanging awareness that observes all experience without being caught by it. It is not a state you enter and exit, but the ground of consciousness itself.
Yes. Many spiritual practitioners experience fleeting glimpses of turiya in deep meditation where mental activity subsides and pure awareness reveals itself. However, these glimpses differ from stabilization—the habit of identifying with mind returns when the meditation ends. Stabilization in turiya means consciousness remains anchored in witnessing awareness continuously, even during waking activity and sleep.
Enlightenment is the permanent stabilization of consciousness in turiya. An enlightened being's reference point has shifted from identifying with the personal mind to resting as consciousness itself. They continue to function in the world, but their fundamental identity is anchored in the witnessing awareness that remains unchanged by all experience.
Those stabilized in turiya typically exhibit unwavering presence regardless of circumstances, the ability to witness all mental and emotional content without attachment, an absence of personal doership even while acting effectively, and natural compassion without defensive ego-contraction. They describe their state as profoundly ordinary, not dramatic or filled with special feelings.
No. Peak experiences are intense, temporary expansions of consciousness that come and go, leaving the nervous system and mind basically unchanged. Turiya is the stable, non-dramatic ground awareness that does not fluctuate. Someone stabilized in turiya might have peak experiences, but these occur within the unchanging witnessing awareness that is their fundamental nature.
Spiritual practice like meditation and self-inquiry can reveal turiya, but stabilization ultimately depends on grace and surrender more than technique. Inquiry into the nature of awareness itself—asking 'Who is aware right now?' and locating the unchanging witness—can directly reveal what turiya is. The knowledge that it is possible and your true nature can orient sincere practice.
Yes. The mind continues to function and emotions still arise, but they are observed rather than identified with. Actions occur naturally in response to circumstances, but without the sense of a separate 'I' making decisions. Desires may appear, but they are not taken as personal commands but as movements of life flowing through consciousness.
