Rev. Jacob Watson, D. Min., is a meditation teacher, chaplain and author. He graduated from the Chaplaincy Institute for Arts & Interfaith Ministries and the University of Creation Spirituality. He helped start the Center for Grieving Children and was the founding Abbot of the interfaith Chaplaincy Institute of Maine. He has served several hospices as a chaplain.
A meditator for 50 years, Jacob studies with Chas DiCapua, the guiding teacher of the Open Door Meditation Community, where he is a member. He also belongs to Portland Dharma House, where he served on the Leadership Council, and he meditates with that community daily. His life is focused on teaching, writing, prayer and meditation, and his teachings, meditations and stories can be heard on Insight Timer.
Jacob has written four books. Essence: The Emotional Path to Spirit explores how our natural emotions clear a path to the spiritual life. Enso Morning: Daily Meditation Gifts offers over 160 Morning Blessing Letters drawing on the nature of coastal Maine. Gifts of Grief: A Man's Revelations after Sudden Loss tells of the unexpected gifts that came after the sudden death of his wife, Kristine. We're Gainin' is a memoir of Collins Brook School, a Maine free school he founded with his then-wife Sharon at age 27.
Worth Knowing
Rev. Jacob Watson, D.Min., is a meditation teacher, chaplain, and author who has practiced meditation for about 50 years and works across teaching, writing, prayer, and hospice chaplaincy. His training is unusually layered: he graduated from the Chaplaincy Institute for Arts & Interfaith Ministries and from the University of Creation Spirituality, helped start the Center for Grieving Children, and served as founding Abbot of the interfaith Chaplaincy Institute of Maine. He has served several hospices as a chaplain, and that work at the bedside of dying people and grieving families shapes much of how he talks about presence and loss. Readers who follow him tend to value that his teaching comes from long sitting practice and from years of pastoral work rather than from borrowed doctrine. His four books range from a memoir of a Maine free school to a grief memoir after the sudden death of his wife, Kristine, so his writing is anchored in lived experience. The distinctive quality is that he is a practitioner first, with a chaplain's attention to suffering and a meditator's patience with the restless mind.
