説明
Self-Guided Explorations is a wellness retreat at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, for people who want a few days to reset without a fixed program. Opening and closing circles with your cohort frame the stay, and everything between is yours to shape: yoga, breathwork, meditation, conscious dance, creative arts, long soaks in the hot springs, or very little at all. It suits anyone seeking a restorative Big Sur retreat on their own terms, whether to reconnect with a dormant passion, tend an old wound, or simply remember the joy of being alive.
Guest faculty and resident teachers offer the open classes, among them Sam Stern and Micha Merrick, both musicians.
What to Expect
The week begins on Monday with check-in, followed by a short orientation, How to Drop Into Esalen, and then the Welcome Circle with your cohort. From there the days have a gentle rhythm. Mornings begin with classes such as Pathways to Joy, MOJA: Elemental Flow, Mahasandhi Meditation and The Body Electric. Midday and afternoon sessions have included Good Contact: Basic Practices of Gestalt, Breathscapes, a Healing Circle, Exploring Creativity, A Brief History of Esalen: The 60s, The Hive and the Hum, and Bathing Rituals of Self Renewal. Some evenings bring a program or a recovery-oriented 12-Step session, and the rest is open time for solitude, writing, or quiet enjoyment of the land.
Open classes run first-come, first-served, with no advance sign-up, and the schedule can change, so listings posted on campus are the most current. The stay closes with a Closing Circle on Friday morning for the five-day program, or on Sunday morning for a weekend stay.
The teachers come from backgrounds in psychology, mindfulness, somatics, creative arts and holistic healing. Esalen Massage and other healing arts sessions are available as optional extras with practitioners on site.
The Setting
Esalen sits on a forty-acre campus on the Big Sur coast, with natural hot springs, ocean views and meditation gardens. Meals are buffet-style in the Lodge, at 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm. Check-in begins at 2:00 pm on Monday, with room keys available at 4:00 pm.
Accommodation ranges from a shared sleeping bag space (bring your own bedding; service animals cannot be accommodated there) and bunk rooms for four to six guests, to shared standard rooms, private queen and two-bed rooms, and premium queen and king rooms with ocean or forest views. Guests can also choose to stay off-site or come for a single day.
Highway 1 access to northern Big Sur has been managed through Caltrans convoys that run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., the sole times for traveling in or out. Plan your arrival and departure around them and check the current advisory before you travel.
Before You Go
No prior experience is needed. The stay includes housing, three meals a day, coffee, tea and snacks, 24-hour access to the hot springs and campus, all open-schedule classes, and the opening and closing circles.
Not included are Healing Arts sessions such as Esalen Massage, craniosacral therapy and energy work, specialty coffee, tea or alcohol from the bar, and bookstore purchases. Guests in this program have access to open classes but not to pre-registered workshops. Scholarships are available through an application.
