Annie Langlois's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

A session with Annie Langlois does not ease you in. There is brief orientation—how to position your body, what to expect when the breathing accelerates, when to signal if you need support—and then you begin. The room, whether holding five people or twenty, grows thick with sound: the rush of accelerated breath, occasional coughs, sometimes crying or laughter that seems to come from somewhere other than deliberate thought. Langlois moves through the space, offering minimal verbal cues, a hand on a shoulder, a quiet "stay with it." The work is sustained, often sixty to ninety minutes of continuous circular breathing, and it is not comfortable. This is breath as labor, not as sedative.

What distinguishes Langlois from practitioners in adjacent traditions—yogic pranayama, Wim Hof method, box breathing for anxiety regulation—is her insistence that the breath is not a tool for control but for release. She does not teach breathing techniques to calm the nervous system, though that may happen incidentally. Her work belongs to the lineage of holotropic and rebirthing breathwork, practices developed in the 1970s that use sustained hyperventilation to induce non-ordinary states of consciousness. Unified conscious breathing, as she teaches it, involves a continuous inhale-exhale pattern with no pause, no retention. The instruction is to breathe more than feels natural, to override the body's automatic rhythms and see what surfaces when you do.

The central recurring theme in Langlois's teaching is this: the body remembers what the mind has filed away. She speaks of "body consciousness" and "somatic memory" not as metaphor but as literal truth. Emotions, traumas, unmetabolized experiences—these, she suggests, are stored in tissue, in breath restriction, in the chronic tension of a jaw or diaphragm. The breath, when pushed past its habitual patterns, can unlock these holdings. In post-session integration circles, she asks: "What came up? Where in your body did you feel it? What does it want you to know?" The questions are not rhetorical. She expects participants to sit with them, to resist the impulse to narrativize too quickly.

Her delivery is sparse. Langlois does not rely on humor to ease intensity, nor does she lean heavily on story or personal disclosure. There is no soundtrack of spiritual platitudes, no promise of healing or transformation. She offers instruction, presence, and occasionally a reframe: "The shaking is not a problem. Let it move." "Your mind will tell you to stop. You don't have to listen." The aesthetic is one of containment rather than warmth. She holds space, but she does not coax or comfort. The silence between her words carries weight. Participants are left to do their own meaning-making.

This approach lands for those who have already tried the talking cure and found it insufficient. It attracts people comfortable with discomfort, willing to spend an hour breathing past the point of ease to see what's on the other side. It appeals to those drawn to embodied practice over intellectual inquiry, to individuals who trust that the body has its own intelligence. It is also, undeniably, intense. Those who prefer structured guidance, clear explanations, or a more relational teaching style may find Langlois too distant. Those who need safety established through warmth rather than steadiness may struggle with her reserve. And for anyone with unmanaged trauma or respiratory conditions, the practice itself—sustained hyperventilation in a room of strangers—can feel destabilizing rather than liberating.

Langlois does not make grand claims about enlightenment or awakening. She does not position breathwork as a spiritual practice, though some participants may experience it that way. Her language is more pragmatic: this is a tool for accessing what is already inside you. The "soul journey" framing suggests depth work, inner exploration, the kind of inquiry that is personal and non-dogmatic. She does not reference scripture or Eastern philosophy extensively. The work is experiential first, interpretive second.

In the wider landscape of somatic practices, Langlois occupies a specific niche. She is not a trauma therapist, though her work brushes up against trauma. She is not a meditation teacher, though the states accessed through sustained breathwork can resemble meditative absorption. She carries forward a tradition that treats the body as primary text, breath as the method of reading it. It is work for those who are willing to breathe harder, feel more, and make sense of it afterward—if sense is even the right word for what emerges.
