À propos de cet événement

Description

Embodied Insight is a seven-night silent meditation retreat at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, centered on mindfulness of the body. It is taught in the Theravada Insight (vipassanā) tradition by Vance Pryor and JD Doyle, and it is meant for practitioners who already have some silent retreat experience and want to make sensation and breath the ground of their practice.

What to Expect

The retreat invites you to meet the body moment by moment, using sensation and breath as the primary objects of attention. Through sustained attention, the body shows itself as a living field of change, which opens a clearer view into the nature of experience. The teachers note that what people discover often surprises them, loosening old habits of identification and bringing a quiet sense of freedom.

Lovingkindness meditation runs throughout, softening the heart so that whatever arises can be met with tenderness. Wisdom and compassion are practiced side by side, resting in simple presence.

Arrival is on the first afternoon, between 2:30 and 4:30 PM, followed by an opening orientation and meditation instruction. The middle days are given to daily sitting in silence, teacher-led instruction on embodied awareness, lovingkindness practice periods, and meals taken in silence. Teacher-led Q&A sessions and small group meetings with the teachers offer a chance to talk about practice. Apart from those meetings, the retreat is silent. The final morning includes closing meditation periods, and departure is at 11:00 AM.

The retreat is held at the same time as another, with all sessions in the upper Meditation Hall on the upper campus. This makes for a smaller, more intimate retreat setting.

About Vance Pryor

Vance Pryor has practiced insight meditation since 1999, in both the United States and Myanmar. He has been influenced by the teachings of Sayadaw U Pandita and Sayadaw U Tejaniya, and he is a graduate of the Insight Meditation Society's 2017-2021 Teacher Training Program.

About JD Doyle

JD Doyle (they/them) teaches at the East Bay Meditation Center and in many other communities. They are committed to celebrating the diversity of our human saṅgha, transforming the impacts of racism, honoring all genders, and living in ways that affirm the sacredness of the Earth.

The Setting

Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, is a residential Insight practice center. Sessions take place in the upper Meditation Hall. Participants stay on campus for seven nights in either single or double rooms. Only 16 of the 80 rooms are doubles. Single rooms are limited and are first prioritized for people with serious medical needs, and a guaranteed single room is offered at the higher sliding scale rates. All meals are provided: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Retreat commuter places, which include meals but not lodging, may be available. They require prior attendance at a weeklong silent residential Insight retreat.

Before You Go

This is an intermediate retreat. Prior experience with silent retreat practice in insight meditation is strongly recommended. If you have never meditated, Spirit Rock suggests starting with two to three daylong programs before attempting a residential retreat. This is not a beginner's introduction.

The retreat is taught in English. The fee covers all instruction and meditation sessions, seven nights of accommodation, and all meals. It does not include travel to and from Spirit Rock, or dana, the voluntary offering to the teachers and to Spirit Rock that is invited at the end of the retreat.

Pricing is on a sliding scale so the teachings stay accessible, and need-based scholarships are available. Payment plans are offered, and participants are asked to stay home if they are ill, since everyone lives closely together.
