Where to Start with Jon Brooks: A Beginner's Guide

Jon Brooks teaches Stoicism as something you train, not something you read about. He is a meditation teacher, Stoicism coach, and podcast host, and he has spent over a decade testing these ideas through meditation, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, coaching, and his own 3am arguments with his mind. His core idea fits in one line: you don't need to control what happens to you, you need to get better at what you do next.

The Best Entry Point: His Insight Timer Meditations

Start with his meditations on Insight Timer. They have reached millions of listens, and they are the most direct form of his work. Stoicism here is a ten-minute practice you do, not an argument you evaluate.

Open the app, search for Jon Brooks, and pick a session that matches your current state. If you're anxious, choose one that addresses anxiety or reactivity. Listen once without judging whether it's "working." The point is to feel how the central idea, shifting attention from what you can't control to what you can, operates in real time before you encounter it as a concept.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. The Stoic Handbook podcast. Once the meditations have given you a feel for the practice, the podcast supplies the context. It has passed 500,000 downloads, and its conversations focus on what works when you're anxious, reactive, or stuck, rather than on Stoic theory.

2. The Donald Robertson conversation. Robertson is one of the best-known voices on practical Stoicism. Hearing him in dialogue with Brooks shows you how the practice connects to its philosophical roots without turning into a lecture.

3. The Jules Evans conversation. Evans brings a different angle on how ancient philosophy functions as a modern tool for living. Listening to him after Robertson gives you two perspectives on the same question: how do these ideas change what a person does on an ordinary bad day?

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect something plain and practical. There is no mystical vocabulary and no promise of calm. The tone is closer to a coach than a guru, which makes sense given his background on the mat and in coaching. You will be asked to notice things: where your attention goes, what you tell yourself, what you do in the gap between a trigger and a response.

You may also feel mildly underwhelmed at first. The work is cumulative. A single session rarely feels dramatic, and the payoff shows up the next time something goes wrong and you catch yourself half a second earlier than usual.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Stoicism means suppressing emotion. It doesn't. The practice is about changing your relationship to emotion and choosing your next action, not pretending you feel nothing.

It's philosophy homework. Brooks is explicit that this is training, like the gym or the mat. If you only listen and never practice, you've missed the point.

Control means getting your way. The framing is the opposite. You don't need to control what happens to you, only your response. Beginners often hear "control" and assume it's about managing outcomes.

Meditation should feel peaceful. Many first sessions feel restless. In this approach, noticing the restlessness is the practice.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest when you are in a reactive stretch: a stressful job, a conflict you keep replaying, chronic low-level anxiety, or a period where things keep going wrong and you feel at the mercy of them. It also suits people who have tried to think their way out of anxiety and found that thinking alone doesn't work. If you respond better to doing than to reading, the training framing will probably click.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Do one Insight Timer meditation from Jon Brooks. Afterward, write one sentence on what your mind did during it.

Day 2: Repeat, ideally at the same time of day. Pick a time you can keep.

Day 3: Do a session aimed at anxiety or reactivity. Notice one moment today when you reacted fast, and ask what your next move could have been.

Day 4: Start The Stoic Handbook podcast and listen to the Donald Robertson conversation. Pause meditation if you like, but keep the noticing habit going.

Day 5: Meditate again. Before something stressful today, ask: what is mine to control here, and what isn't?

Day 6: Listen to the Jules Evans conversation. Compare it with Robertson's. Where do they agree?

Day 7: Meditate one last time, then review the week. Which moment did you handle differently from usual? If you can name one, keep going. If not, extend the plan another week before deciding.

AboutJon Brooks

Jon Brooks teaches Stoicism as a daily practice — not as philosophy you read about, but as something you train, the way you'd train a skill in the gym or on the mat.
