The Gift of thePresent: Presence as Practice

Carolina Chrem

The title alone carries the whole philosophy: El Regalo del Presente—the gift of the present. Not a gift wrapped in the future, not a gift sitting in the past, but the only gift that actually exists, that can actually be opened right now. This is the territory that Carolina Chrem inhabits with her work, a meditation on time, consciousness, and what becomes available when we stop chasing the moments we've lost and start inhabiting the one we occupy.

Why "Present" Matters More Than We Think

In spiritual and contemplative traditions worldwide, the present moment isn't treated as a philosophical abstraction—it's treated as the only real estate where transformation happens. The Stoics called it premeditatio malorum, the discipline of focusing on what is in your control right now. Buddhist meditation traditions center the entire path on recognizing the present as the seat of awareness itself. Hindu dharma teaching speaks of the eternal now, the aum underlying all time.

What unites these lineages isn't a shared belief system; it's a shared recognition that human suffering arises largely from our relationship to time—specifically, from our habit of leaving the present moment to chase regrets or fears. The gift, then, isn't something external. It's the reclamation of attention itself.

Carolina Chrem and the Language of Sound

Released in 2012 on the Impar label, "El Regalo del Presente" arrives as a musical work—which is significant. The contemplative traditions have long understood sound as a vehicle for presence. Kirtan, the call-and-response chanting practice emerging from South Asian devotional traditions, works precisely because the repetition anchors the mind in the moment. The harmonium drone creates a sonic container; the voice rises and falls within it. There's no room for the mind to wander to yesterday when your attention is bound to a melodic line unfolding in real time.

While the specifics of Chrem's approach on this release remain embedded in the work itself—audio available to those who listen—the title signals an intentional marriage of form and content. The gift is wrapped in the present; the wrapping is sound; the unwrapping is what happens when you press play and allow yourself five minutes outside of your ordinary relationship to time.

The Architecture of Presence Practice

Any genuine practice of presence rests on a few recognizable foundations. First is the acknowledgment that presence is not a permanent state but a skill—something that must be cultivated, practiced, returned to again and again. The mind will wander. That's not failure; that's how minds work. The practice is in the noticing and the gentle redirection.

Second is the understanding that presence isn't empty or blank. It's vivid. When you're truly present—when you're not narrating what's happening but simply aware of it—experience becomes clearer, richer, more detailed. Colors look brighter. Sounds have more texture. Other people's faces show dimensions you hadn't noticed. This is what Buddhists call samprajanya, clear comprehension—not a foggy or spacey state, but the opposite: laser-focused wakefulness.

Third is the recognition that presence is generous. When you're fully with someone, fully listening, fully there, something shifts in the relational field. People feel seen. Attention is the most valuable currency we have, and when we offer it freely, it transforms what's possible. This is why presence practice is so often framed as a gift—not just to ourselves, but to everyone we encounter.

The Practice in Three Minutes

The work titled "El Regalo del Presente" is brief—less than five minutes. This matters. In an era of ten-hour YouTube meditation sessions and 365-day app streaks, there's radical honesty in a four-minute song or piece of music. It suggests that presence doesn't require marathon dedication; it requires intention. Presence happens in a breath, in a moment of genuine listening, in the space between two thoughts.

This is accessible spirituality—not inaccessible, not performance, not requiring special equipment or a retreat center. Just attention. Just now.

What the Title Promises

When you call a work "The Gift of the Present," you're making a claim about what's possible. Not "The Difficulty of Now," not "The Challenge of Awareness," not "Struggling Toward Presence." The gift. The generosity. The surprise of finding, when you finally pause, that everything you were looking for was happening all along.

In Spanish, the word regalo carries both meanings: gift and delight. There's an inherent pleasure promised in the title itself. This isn't grim spiritual work; it's an invitation to discover that the present moment—your actual life, unfolding right now—is the very thing worth unwrapping.

Where to go from here

If the philosophy of presence resonates, the next step is almost always the same: practice. Listen to the work. Notice what you're thinking about while you listen—that's material. Spend five minutes fully present with something ordinary: a meal, a walk, a conversation. Don't make it spiritual; just be there. The gift reveals itself when you stop looking for it and start opening what's already here.

Preguntas Frecuentes

The Spanish title translates to 'The Gift of the Present,' referring to the gift of presence and living in the current moment—a central theme in contemplative traditions across many spiritual practices.
While often used interchangeably, presence emphasizes being fully here right now, while mindfulness emphasizes aware observation. Presence is the state; mindfulness is the practice of cultivating it. Both involve moving attention away from past regrets and future worries into the only moment where actual living happens.
Sound and music anchor the mind in the present moment because listening requires attention in real time. The harmonium drone and vocal lines create a sonic container that prevents the mind from wandering, making music an effective vehicle for presence practice across many traditions.
Yes. Presence isn't determined by duration but by intention and quality of attention. Even brief moments of genuine presence—five minutes of full listening, a meal eaten without distraction—can shift your relationship to awareness and time.
Presence practice appears across religious and secular contexts. While many spiritual traditions emphasize presence, secular psychology and neuroscience also recognize the benefits of present-moment awareness for wellbeing and mental clarity.
Presence is characterized by clear, vivid awareness of what's actually happening—not narration about it. You'll notice details you normally miss, feel more engaged, and experience less mental chatter. If you're thinking about being present, that's the mind thinking; presence is simpler and quieter.
