How Desire Became the Framework: Living Beyond Systems

Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte sat in a Washington DC think tank wearing black suits and reading Rolling Stone magazine in secret. By day, she was part of what passed for the intelligentsia, writing white papers on future scenarios and weapons of mass destruction, hoping to convince Pentagon officials to fund her organization's predictions about water wars and geopolitical collapse. By night, she'd go home and smoke a Marlboro, feeling completely severed from the supposed sophistication of it all. "I'm really not that interested in the future," she realized. "I really want to talk about love and I want to paint and I'm an entrepreneur." That dissonance—the gap between the path that looked impressive and the path that felt true—became the catalyst for everything she would later create.

LaPorte's entire professional arc has been a series of deliberate escapes from systems that fundamentally don't fit her. She never attended university, which she describes not as a limitation but as an unexpected liberation. "I didn't go to university so I never had a box to get in and out of," she explains in conversation with Jonathan Fields on the Good Life Project podcast. This absence of formal credentialing could have haunted her, but instead she used it as her advantage. Running a DC think tank, she would later observe, "I didn't go to Harvard, I just went to high school. I must have something going for me to be here without that." The lack of a box meant she never fully internalized the unspoken rules about who belongs and how they should behave.

The Education Question: Evoking vs. Cramming

When pressed on what specifically bothers her about traditional education, LaPorte doesn't offer policy critique or the usual arguments about standardized testing. She goes deeper, to something more fundamental: the emotional and spiritual cost of systems designed to correct rather than evoke. Education, as she experienced it, operates on a model of fitting round children into predefined slots. "I want it to be more like a bowl you know instead of you fitting into a peg," she says. The metaphor is precise. A bowl nourishes what's already there. A peg slot requires you to become smaller, duller, more conformable.

What haunts her most is a single absence: "Nobody in school ever asked me how I wanted to feel. Not that day, not that semester, let alone in my life. And yet they're helping me plan for my life." This gap—between the massive influence schools exert over your trajectory and their complete indifference to your actual felt experience—struck her as the core dysfunction. They were designing her future while ignoring the person doing the living. Schools teach you to answer external questions: What is the right answer? What grade did you earn? What college will take you? But they never ask the question that matters: How do you want to feel?

Even as a parent, she sees the pattern repeating. "One teacher can set the course for a year if not longer," she observes, watching her son navigate the system. What if that teacher doesn't resonate with your child? What if the teaching method is about cramming rather than evoking? "In school I don't want it to be that way," she says. "I want it to be more nourishing of who you are." She believes something radically different: "I actually think we come fully formed. We need to be on our tracks and we need to be nursed and we need to be fed but you don't go to school to figure out a right way and a wrong way to be."

The Winding Path: Bartender to Think Tank

LaPorte's early career wasn't a strategic climb toward expertise. It was more like following threads. She bartended. Then she started hustling people at radio stations and writing press releases. At a party, someone asked what she did. She answered that she got people gigs. "You're a publicist," they said. She went and got a business card. That client happened to be a futurist, which taught her something crucial: "When you stick with a theme, when you stick with a track, you get momentum." That insight—that staying with one through-line accumulates power—became a guiding principle.

The momentum carried her into the think tank world. Running a think tank, as she describes it, reveals something odd about how certain professional ecosystems work. You gather people deemed (mostly by themselves) to be intelligent. You have them write white papers predicting future scenarios: what will happen with weapons of mass destruction, how water wars will reshape geopolitics, where trends will collide and converge. Then you hope the Pentagon buys those papers for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Or you hope someone in the news quotes one of your researchers, which gives you enough credibility to secure nonprofit funding. "It's like Hollywood in DC," LaPorte says. There's a vibe, a glamour, a sense of importance. But also a core artificiality.

She was good at it. She was in the room with serious people discussing serious futures. But something in her was dying. The work asked her to think in abstractions. It asked her to perform a certain identity, to belong to an elite class of futurists and scenario planners. What it didn't do was evoke her. She describes this period with striking honesty: "That was like me finding my way in the world, that's like pushing against systems to define myself. That's learning what I'm made out of. That's faking it to make it. That's imposter complex." The think tank wasn't a calling; it was a test. And the friction taught her what she wasn't.

The Nonprofit Disillusionment and the Pivot

When she tried to run a nonprofit alongside her think tank work, she encountered a system equally dysfunctional, just with better marketing. Nonprofits, too, grub constantly for money. They're caught in a perpetual fundraising cycle that prevents them from actually building something sustainable based on the real value of the work. "This is dysfunctional," she realized. "There's another way to do this. We need to go make money ourselves." This wasn't mere business pragmatism. It was a philosophical statement: Authentic work should be able to sustain itself. If your mission is so important that you can't pay people fairly, or if you're constantly in crisis-mode fundraising, then something in the model is broken, not something in the world.

That realization pushed her toward a different kind of entrepreneurship—one where she wouldn't hustle for nonprofit money or perform for Pentagon officials or wear a uniform that didn't fit. She would build something that honored her actual values and could sustain itself through genuine exchange.

The Core Question: How Do You Want to Feel?

Everything LaPorte would create from this inflection point is rooted in a single inversion of how most people approach their lives. Typically, the framework is external: What do you want to achieve? What career should you pursue? What income do you need? What markers of success matter? These questions pull you outward, toward metrics and external validation. They leave something untouched: your actual experience of being alive.

LaPorte's insight flips this entirely. Your desired feeling—not your desired achievement—is both more honest and more actionable. If you know how you want to feel (powerful, creative, generous, alive, connected, purposeful), you can evaluate everything through that lens. Does this job make me feel how I want to feel? Does this relationship? Does this way of spending money? The framework shifts from abstract goals to lived experience.

This became the foundation of Desire Map and later Fire Starter Sessions. Rather than asking entrepreneurs and creatives to chase external markers of success, she invites them to get clear on their core desired feelings first, then build their work backward from that emotional truth. It's the inverse of the education she rejected. Instead of telling you how you should feel (proud of the grade, validated by the ranking), you decide how you want to feel, and you use that as your compass.

Building a Business on Authenticity

The philosophy extends to how LaPorte builds her own work. She refuses the standard metrics of ego or prestige. "I don't have any interest in being the bottom line of any business for the sake of it being impressive," she explains. When she speaks on stage, she's fully present—available, attentive, believing in the people in front of her. When she's done speaking, she leaves that role entirely. There's no need to maintain a persona, no hunger for ongoing adulation. The work is the work; the person is just the person.

This approach runs counter to how most thought leaders and entrepreneurs build empires around their personal brand. What LaPorte measures instead is whether the actual work helps people, whether it creates space for them to feel and desire and live more authentically. That's the metric. Everything else is distraction.

She reframes what people often call charisma in surprisingly humble terms. "Charisma I don't think can be taught," she says. True magnetism isn't a technique; it's presence. "Magnetism is I'm here, I'm listening, I'm present... like keep moving on your journey because I believe in you." You can't fake genuine attention and belief. You can only offer it or withhold it. When she's with someone, she's actually with them. That's the whole thing.

Where to Go From Here

For anyone feeling trapped by systems that don't fit their shape—whether that's education, career paths, business models, or social expectations—LaPorte's journey offers something more valuable than a how-to guide. It offers permission and a different map. The invitation isn't to rebel for rebellion's sake, but to get brutally curious: What actually nourishes me? How do I want to feel, and am I organizing my life around that or around someone else's metrics?

The frameworks she's created (Desire Map and Fire Starter Sessions) provide practical tools for that inquiry. But the real gift might be simpler: permission to skip the boxes you're not meant for, permission to wander until you find your track, permission to leave a party when the supposed sophistication stops feeding your soul. The only criterion is whether a system, a job, a relationship, or a path evokes who you already are—your essence, your original self—or whether it's trying to squeeze you into a shape you never agreed to occupy.

[0:11] hi I'm Jonathan fields and this is good

[0:13] life project my guest today is Danielle

[0:15] leaport good friend of mine the author

[0:17] of Fire Starter sessions incredible

[0:18] writer speaker um the creator of

[0:21] something called desire map and um a

[0:24] whole bunch of other just amazing

[0:26] experiences that help people lean into

[0:28] life and

[0:29] explore actually embrace it and and get

[0:32] what they want out of it so it's awesome

[0:33] be hanging out with you I'm so happy to

[0:35] be here lean into to life I like that I

[0:37] like

[0:39] that um it's kind of funny my last book

[0:41] at one point was exploring like lean in

[0:43] and then apparently somebody else took

[0:46] the title some much a little bit later

[0:48] dammer yeah uh so it's so fun to be

[0:51] hanging out with you today we've known

[0:52] each other for a while and we' sort of

[0:54] like seen each other explore like and

[0:56] move through different parts of our

[0:57] Journeys together and um I want to take

[1:00] a step back back with you I want get

[1:01] into desire map and what you're doing

[1:02] with it and but take a step back cuz

[1:05] you've kind of had this really

[1:06] fascinating Journey which is not a

[1:07] straight line um and there's so much

[1:10] humanity and there's struggle and

[1:12] there's Triumph there's exploration I

[1:14] love people to be able to sort of

[1:15] benefit from your journey um and to see

[1:19] the humanity of it to see the fact that

[1:22] you know you you lean into it and that

[1:23] you sort of you keep exploring and

[1:25] learning and growing so um not starting

[1:28] when you were five but you know

[1:31] what are you saying my childhood isn't

[1:32] relevant no I'm saying completely

[1:34] irrelevant we just can't go there today

[1:37] I was born in

[1:39] Canada I know the end of the sentence um

[1:43] so you start out professionally let's

[1:45] sort of like take in on that level and

[1:46] we'll kind of dance around it okay the

[1:49] highlights are that I think this is

[1:52] really relevant I didn't go to

[1:54] university so I never had a box to get

[1:57] in and out of it's out of the box I

[1:59] still feel really really uncomfortable

[2:01] in any academic setting like even

[2:03] cafeteras at universities I'm just like

[2:06] how what what do people do here um do

[2:09] you speak at universities at all no okay

[2:12] no would you they haven't called yeah

[2:14] and I'd probably say leave

[2:17] now I would say half of you probably

[2:20] aren't meant to be here for like the

[2:22] shape of your

[2:23] soul you you don't need this to do to be

[2:27] who you are and um yeah

[2:31] um what makes you I mean the first thing

[2:33] you said was like you called the

[2:35] University of box let's kind I want to

[2:37] explore this more a little bit actually

[2:38] what is it about sort of like

[2:40] universities or or mainstream education

[2:42] or however it is you want that in your

[2:44] mind makes it a box right answer wrong

[2:47] answer uh the grading system the karma

[2:51] of teachers you know I even look at

[2:55] grade school and my young son and you

[2:59] know it's really clear how one one

[3:00] teacher can set his course for a year if

[3:03] not longer and what if that just there

[3:06] isn't that there isn't a click there

[3:08] isn't a resonance what if your teacher

[3:11] doesn't get you and it's not about

[3:13] evoking it's about cramming and pushing

[3:17] and oh painful tragic and that's life

[3:20] right that's like friction and and

[3:22] creative tension and that's how it

[3:25] really works in the real world you're

[3:26] going to you're going to bump up against

[3:29] different paradigms but

[3:30] which in school I don't want it to be

[3:32] that way I want it to be I want it to be

[3:36] more like a a bowl you know instead of

[3:40] you fitting into a peg yeah so more

[3:43] nourishing sort of like who you are and

[3:45] finding your voice your soul your spirit

[3:47] yeah before people start to yeah before

[3:50] you start like bump up you go to get

[3:52] shaped how ridiculous is that like I

[3:55] actually think we come fully

[3:57] formed you know it's like we need to be

[4:00] on our tracks and we need to be nursed

[4:02] and we need to be fed but you don't you

[4:05] don't go to school to figure out a right

[4:08] way and a wrong way to be you should

[4:10] enter a system that helps you that that

[4:14] evokes who you already are your essence

[4:16] your original Self and then now I mean

[4:18] you've already got me on a t on a on a

[4:21] whole train but you know nobody in

[4:24] school ever asked me how I wanted to

[4:27] feel not that day not that semester let

[4:30] alone in my life and yet they're they're

[4:32] helping me plan for my life nobody

[4:37] said how do you want to feel oh I want

[4:40] to feel powerful I want to feel I want

[4:42] to use my

[4:44] imagination right like I took one of

[4:46] those those aptitude tests and I

[4:50] supposed to be a fashion designer or a

[4:56] Rancher no we're a fashion designing

[4:58] Rancher yeah it worked for Ralph Lauren

[5:02] actually yeah all right or you could

[5:04] design outfits for ranchers yeah yeah I

[5:07] like Cowboys

[5:09] so um so you go from this place of

[5:12] saying okay you like mainstream

[5:14] education not for me not my path um

[5:17] where' you go from there I mean what's

[5:19] the evolution it's worth saying that

[5:21] that was unconscious like I wasn't like

[5:24] education is not for me it was just like

[5:25] hey I'm going to bartend until I figure

[5:27] out what I'm going to do um then you

[5:30] know then there was this Trail I started

[5:33] hustling some people at radio stations

[5:35] and writing press releases met someone

[5:37] at a party once they said what do you do

[5:39] I said oh I get people gigs they said

[5:40] you're a publicist I said I am a

[5:43] publicist I need to go get a business

[5:44] card and one of the people that one of

[5:48] my clients was a

[5:50] futurist and that's where I learned the

[5:53] value of you you you hang out in a small

[5:55] pond like you get momentum when you

[5:58] stick with a theme when you stick with a

[5:59] track

[6:01] and so I ended up running a think tank

[6:02] in Washington DC where I was asked every

[6:05] day uh either to sign an NDA or what my

[6:09] alma matter was I didn't even know what

[6:11] an alma matter was I had to look it up

[6:13] was that and I used my lack of Education

[6:16] to my advantage that was it was a bit of

[6:19] an ego thing but I was like I didn't go

[6:21] to Harvard I just went to high school I

[6:23] must have something going for me to be

[6:25] here without that so you're hanging out

[6:27] in Washington you're a tank what does

[6:29] that mean

[6:30] uh yeah it was totally surreal so you

[6:32] get a bunch of smart people together

[6:35] usually deemed by themselves that

[6:36] they're smart

[6:38] s and you write white papers and you

[6:41] hope that someone's going to buy those

[6:43] white papers you put all your ideas

[6:45] together this is what we think the

[6:46] future of weapons of mass destruction

[6:48] look like this is what we think is going

[6:50] to happen with the future of water and

[6:52] water wars we were future study Sy tank

[6:54] so was scenario planning this is how we

[6:56] think Trends are going to collide or

[6:58] converge and um hopefully you dear

[7:02] Pentagon want to pay us hundreds of

[7:04] thousands of dollars for these white

[7:05] papers and we have to stop hustling for

[7:07] nonprofit money um or someone in the

[7:11] news is going to want to quote one of us

[7:14] and that's what a think tank is and it's

[7:18] it's

[7:20] uh it's like Hollywood in DC think tanks

[7:24] yeah so it was so weird and cool there's

[7:26] a Vibe um education thing tanks when you

[7:31] talk about

[7:33] them it's not what a wonderful

[7:37] thing I think this is going to be

[7:41] therapy yeah no that was that was that's

[7:45] resist that's like me finding my way in

[7:47] the world that's like pushing against

[7:49] systems to Define myself that's learning

[7:53] what I'm made out of that's faking it to

[7:57] make it that's impostor complex that's

[7:59] what it is

[8:00] doctor it's imposter complex you go home

[8:02] at night wearing black suits and you

[8:06] know bob haircut no tattoos

[8:09] loafers and uh I just Dy in a smoke a

[8:12] marbro cigarette and read Rolling Stone

[8:15] magazine

[8:17] and but all this stuff all the stuff

[8:20] outside this is So Glamorous it's so the

[8:24] intelligencia the the supposed

[8:27] sophistication and that's a huge test I

[8:29] mean I would dare say that was one of my

[8:33] first Heroes Journeys

[8:36] to to just go to be with all of

[8:39] that and just be like I I'm really not

[8:42] that interested in the future I really

[8:45] want to talk about love and I want to

[8:48] paint and I want to and I'm an

[8:50] entrepreneur and I want to go make my

[8:52] own thing and my own money

[8:55] and even the nonprofit model didn't work

[8:58] for me I was like this is this does this

[9:00] is dysfunctional this grubbing for money

[9:03] all the time and there's another way to

[9:04] do this we need to go make money

[9:06] ourselves marriage so it seems like I

[9:08] mean dysfunctional systems bother you

[9:13] yes just oh my God I can't walk into a

[9:15] restaurant without going there's the

[9:18] serving and the thing and the lighting

[9:19] and the Jazz and

[9:21] oh yeah design is love like good design

[9:25] is love it's well thought every and good

[9:29] design

[9:30] considers everybody it considers your

[9:33] emotions it considers the

[9:38] ecology there's Beauty in it I mean good

[9:41] design is there's always an there's

[9:42] always some kind of Elegance to

[9:45] it um yeah so I I

[9:49] guess I'm a deeper systems lover than

[9:53] maybe I knew but now that I'm here on

[9:54] your couch am I going to have to pay you

[9:56] for this it's on me first time

[10:02] after that we'll loog you into a

[10:06] series no it's it's really fascinating

[10:08] to me because you're somebody who builds

[10:11] systems yourself you're somebody who

[10:13] loves reverse engineering figuring out

[10:16] processes Maps systems like ways to get

[10:20] people from A to B right but it's it's

[10:23] also clearly like it's it it feels like

[10:26] so much of it is

[10:28] like you're

[10:30] you know part of it is a desire to

[10:31] actually build something that's

[10:32] functional and works and then part of it

[10:34] is desire to basically like you know

[10:36] like give the finger to all of the

[10:38] dysfunctional systems that exist that

[10:40] stop people from going where they want

[10:42] to go yeah you know what I my conclusion

[10:45] with all those dysfunctional systems is

[10:47] that if you want to be an agent of

[10:50] change you actually have to get out of

[10:52] the system and it isn't that let me

[10:54] rephrase that I need to get out of the

[10:56] system to be an agent of change I don't

[10:58] think it's that way for everybody I mean

[11:00] some of us are called to stay in the

[11:03] system to work in universities to be in

[11:06] politics to work in

[11:07] government um but I think I'm at my best

[11:10] when I'm I'm outside of it I don't even

[11:12] buy a ticket to the

[11:14] [Music]

[11:16] game so what's that

[11:18] about I need to be free I need to be

[11:21] free to create and when I'm creating I'm

[11:23] a of service and that Loop goes round

[11:27] and round it's like it's all about me

[11:30] it's all about feeling good it's all

[11:31] about Freedom it's all about fulfilled

[11:35] desire and when that starts happening

[11:38] then I can serve and it's cyclical cuz

[11:42] you know I feel really driven to

[11:44] serve and I've been this way for a long

[11:47] time I think it's a lot of past lives as

[11:49] a nun and I really feel righteous about

[11:53] that like I have my time here I have to

[11:57] be alleviating suffering

[12:01] so I don't know which came first I want

[12:04] to be self-expressed or I want to

[12:06] alleviate suffering but what I know to

[12:09] be true now is that both have to be

[12:11] happening right yeah yeah and for you to

[12:14] make both happen you got to create the

[12:16] own you got to create the playing field

[12:19] yeah yeah I know what I want so how long

[12:23] does it take you to get there uh I'm

[12:25] still getting there I make compromises

[12:28] that just little little kind of paper

[12:32] cut

[12:33] compromises that I

[12:35] go didn't have to do that stay steady

[12:39] with the

[12:40] vision

[12:45] um yeah took a while took a while so

[12:51] let's trace the journey a little bit

[12:52] more um you were loving your time at

[12:55] this Washington thing

[12:58] tank you decided to go off and and

[13:00] basically bail on that and do your own

[13:03] thing but again where do you move in

[13:05] yeah that didn't turn out well

[13:08] either so then I got into like this kind

[13:12] of Soulful

[13:13] branding

[13:15] concept and I brought a partner we I I

[13:19] partner with somebody we had this we had

[13:22] this concept we did the one-on-one

[13:24] Consulting kept raising our rates and

[13:26] then we wrote a book based on this and

[13:29] we were really clear all along we didn't

[13:31] want to be Consultants doing fee for

[13:33] service stuff

[13:35] making six figures a year and going into

[13:38] an office every day we wanted a

[13:40] multi-million dollar company and there I

[13:42] was again I want to be free money is

[13:44] going to make me free the more money the

[13:46] Freer you are that's not true and um so

[13:50] I raised some money we raised some money

[13:53] and uh we didn't get on Oprah even

[13:55] though there was a lot of romance there

[13:57] for a while and then then the CEO who I

[14:00] hired fired me so I was constructively

[14:04] dismissed from my own incorporation I'd

[14:07] made myself an employee that made sense

[14:09] at the time and uh so are you open to

[14:12] like sharing what happened yeah I got

[14:17] quiet the more money we raised the more

[14:21] quiet I became and not in the great

[14:23] introvert quiet

[14:25] sense um I felt like to

[14:31] discuss my feelings the fact that I

[14:34] wasn't like in joy we weren't laughing

[14:37] there wasn't laughter happening in the

[14:38] studio anymore these weren't relevant

[14:41] things anymore to our our

[14:44] shareholders

[14:45] and

[14:47] um yeah it was ter it was I dreaded

[14:51] going in it was the dread came back I

[14:54] remember the day I gave over signing

[14:56] Authority on the corporate checking

[14:58] account my checking account my name so

[15:01] and so and Danielle

[15:03] Inc and I didn't question the rules this

[15:05] was another time where I didn't question

[15:08] that it could be a different way because

[15:11] it didn't feel right oh this is how the

[15:13] corporate structure works you have X

[15:15] amount of seats on your board and you

[15:18] need to step here and sit ridiculous

[15:21] absurd absurd absurd my body knew it was

[15:23] absurd I couldn't breathe when I went

[15:25] into the office i' put my hand on the

[15:28] door knob every morning morning with my

[15:30] name on the

[15:32] door I have to psych myself up so my ass

[15:35] got

[15:36] canned

[15:38] and uh I was told I was going to write

[15:40] blog posts from home could I return my

[15:43] computer and my office

[15:45] chair uh lots of lawyers got involved

[15:48] and my shrank and a few business coaches

[15:50] and a good

[15:52] Buddhist uh uh counselor

[15:56] and lots of Rage and I realized that my

[16:01] all the Betrayal and all the theatrics

[16:03] that happened in that situation cuz

[16:05] there was a lot of

[16:07] betrayal that was a reflection of my

[16:09] betraying

[16:11] myself every time I didn't open my mouth

[16:14] and say this is wrong or I want this

[16:18] betrayal every time I went into that

[16:20] office with a fake smile betrayal and it

[16:25] manifested yeah and then I I hit the

[16:29] running after that actually it was great

[16:32] yeah so what was it that allowed you to

[16:35] go from that place to hitting the ground

[16:37] running what changed I knew even in the

[16:40] moment you know I drove home after we

[16:42] had we had a meeting in Starbucks where

[16:44] I was I and my partner were dismissed we

[16:47] were informed that the business model

[16:48] was changing I drove home screaming in

[16:52] my

[16:54] car you know the bad

[16:57] mascara and even in that I just thought

[16:59] I'm free I mean part of that scream was

[17:02] like oh can't believe this happened what

[17:06] and then it was also like I'm free at

[17:09] the same time and that was and I just I

[17:12] made promises to myself that that week

[17:15] of I will never dummy down ever again

[17:18] I'm going to say [ __ ] [ __ ] and

[17:21] [ __ ] on my blog if I want to I'm

[17:24] going to choose the pan tones I want I'm

[17:27] going helvetica

[17:29] people the biggest sin of

[17:33] allica and I really didn't look back

[17:37] now I that's when I stood up fire

[17:39] starter sessions I you know basically

[17:42] put an ad up of one post on my blog I

[17:45] had 60 subscribers I started with 60

[17:49] subscribers

[17:51] and I said I can help people start

[17:54] businesses I know how to do this I know

[17:56] how to stand stuff up and I was aund

[18:01] what was I it was $300 for a session I

[18:04] went to 16 cities in a year living rooms

[18:07] pole dancing Studios wherever they would

[18:09] have me paid for my own

[18:10] flights and at the end of that I had a

[18:14] book what gave you this is a permission

[18:19] question right so you come from a

[18:21] background

[18:22] where boom boom boom boom boom things

[18:24] don't work out you're learning a lot

[18:26] you're growing a lot and in your mind

[18:28] like yeah okay I'm some a flip you has

[18:33] switched something's changed I'm capable

[18:36] and I can serve people on a deep level

[18:41] um what gives you Surly the ability to

[18:44] go out and then say I can do this when a

[18:47] lot of people would look and say um well

[18:49] you can't do that because Ed you you've

[18:52] never done it yourself publicly I'll

[18:54] tell you I want it that's it I want to

[18:57] do it I want to I want to do it it I

[18:59] guess in an unconscious way I've always

[19:02] been really in touch with my desire I

[19:06] want it I am going to go get it and um

[19:11] you know sometimes I went and got stuff

[19:12] at the cost

[19:14] of um just of my own health you know

[19:18] that

[19:19] Fierce goal chasing and know you know

[19:22] I've completely changed my relationship

[19:24] to goal

[19:25] setting

[19:27] yeah yeah so at that that point um what

[19:30] feeling are you

[19:31] chasing at that

[19:34] point I

[19:36] [Music]

[19:40] want I want to be

[19:44] seen no I want to be seen with a a

[19:50] rapacious

[19:52] hunger yeah but then you have enough

[19:57] therapy and you

[20:00] my turning point in that was that this

[20:05] is so ironic it's so it's so divinely

[20:10] ironic I always felt guilty for wanting

[20:12] to be

[20:13] seen there I felt this weight about the

[20:18] striving to be seen and when I finally

[20:21] realized that this was like this was a

[20:24] Divine impulse this was actually really

[20:27] healthy that humans a most of us want to

[20:31] be experienced seen heard and felt right

[20:35] basic I needed to go back to that basic

[20:37] level of like you know Danielle not only

[20:40] is this healthy like this is universal

[20:43] whoa okay this is a universal craving

[20:46] I'm not I'm not needy this isn't a

[20:49] Hungry Ghost that's driving everything I

[20:52] do and then when I really started to

[20:55] honor it as like this impulse almost

[20:57] like a

[20:59] I wouldn't say a calling but like a

[21:01] healthy you know healthy

[21:04] momentum then the question became how

[21:07] can I make myself seen

[21:09] today and because for me to be seen is

[21:12] for me to be of service I have something

[21:14] to say that is useful and I was really

[21:17] clear like also in that journey of like

[21:20] the desire to be seen is is actually

[21:22] good let's be righteous about this um

[21:26] then I got clear on

[21:30] my desire to my like just like I'm

[21:33] obsessed with utility this goes back

[21:35] to good systems like I want to be a good

[21:39] system yeah how can I be a good system

[21:41] for you today how can I like make this a

[21:45] great interview how can I listen how can

[21:46] I be an Engaged listener like I'm a yeah

[21:50] it's

[21:53] um it's it's the past life being a nun

[21:57] really

[21:59] and all goes back to

[22:01] that

[22:05] nuns so because it's really fascinating

[22:09] how sort of like you keep circling back

[22:10] to these interesting things but you know

[22:13] it's I'm always curious about you like

[22:15] what's the why behind it what's the the

[22:17] feeling that you want to create in that

[22:19] moment in time and has that evolve you

[22:20] know so starts from wanting to be seen

[22:23] mhm but you know that's that that's that

[22:26] moment in time mhm you know and you're

[22:29] you you've evolved you know I don't does

[22:33] has that gone away at all because to me

[22:36] I still want to be seen and

[22:39] heard not on a big level like I don't

[22:42] need attention I don't need media but

[22:43] and that's not the way you're using it's

[22:45] just to be seen for the essence of who

[22:48] you are yeah and not some facade and I

[22:51] think at this point I don't every once

[22:54] in a while I have Pang with it but I

[22:55] don't really sense that in myself I feel

[22:57] like the people who m in my life see me

[22:59] for who I am um and and accept me um and

[23:03] I think with a lot of people that's an

[23:06] evolutionary step once you f like once

[23:08] you sort of move there so M I'm there

[23:11] with you I

[23:13] feel you know another layer to that

[23:16] Journey was I learned to see

[23:18] myself yeah I see me it starts I know

[23:22] who I am I know what my motives

[23:25] are um you know somebody just asked me

[23:27] recently like

[23:29] like what's what's a mantra that you

[23:32] have that kind of gets you

[23:35] through and it's actually very soft like

[23:38] my Mantra that gets me through all

[23:40] things is I'm loving I know I'm a loving

[23:44] person even when I [ __ ]

[23:47] up I I still just want to be that loving

[23:50] person you know and so that's what gets

[23:52] me through so um that's the biggest

[23:55] recognition that's my most fundamental

[23:57] truth about myself

[23:59] I am love and um where were we going

[24:03] with that where are we going I get

[24:05] distracted by love

[24:06] sorry um you're going to be distracted

[24:08] by something that's a good thing the

[24:10] evolution of sort of like being the

[24:12] evolution yeah and then you know doing

[24:16] what we do and you you you get a bit of

[24:18] a public profile um I struggle with that

[24:22] as well that in that I know that to do

[24:25] what I want to do like I'm a

[24:27] broadcaster

[24:29] like when I meet with my shrink I go how

[24:30] can you do this one-on-one stuff like I

[24:31] want to talk to lots of people um and

[24:34] for my business to be successful you

[24:36] know our revenue is tied to our

[24:37] visibility

[24:39] right

[24:40] um so some of that does get fed that

[24:45] healthy bottom line and need to be seen

[24:48] I get recognition that I it feels great

[24:52] um and I've also learned

[24:54] [Music]

[24:56] to detach to is a really

[24:59] clinical heavy Buddhist word but I

[25:02] detach myself a lot from a lot of it too

[25:04] so I'm at a place now

[25:06] where I don't take the Accolade

[25:09] seriously uh or too personally I should

[25:12] say and I don't take the criticism

[25:13] personally at all no and S I mean we've

[25:17] gone through similar experiences on that

[25:19] level um I don't have any I don't have

[25:22] this strong ego need to be sitting in

[25:23] front of the camera um in fact I would

[25:27] my organic nature is much more

[25:28] introverted I'd rather not be the one

[25:30] who's seen But El know like you said to

[25:33] a certain extent my ability to have

[25:35] these conversations my ability to grow

[25:38] an audience who I can I can serve in

[25:40] some way I can share these conversations

[25:41] with my ability to write books to

[25:42] generate revenue is tied to a certain

[25:45] amount of public profile you got to

[25:48] hustle and so there's this interesting

[25:50] thing because you know I'm much more

[25:52] private person um and I don't have this

[25:54] ego need to to like be fed in that way

[25:59] um but at the same time I know it's it's

[26:01] good it helps me build the business I

[26:03] want to build and serve on the level

[26:04] that I want to serve so there's always

[26:06] this balancing that's going on in my

[26:08] mind I don't know if you have the same

[26:10] thing don't you think like in in our

[26:14] beginnings we sort of needed that ego

[26:16] need like you got to hustle you got to

[26:19] want to be visible to do

[26:21] this

[26:23] um yeah there's something like you know

[26:27] we've all been talking for is about

[26:28] growing our traffic this is about how

[26:30] you build an

[26:31] audience no and it's interesting cuz for

[26:34] me that's always been a struggle for me

[26:36] because I don't want to be public or I

[26:38] don't have a need to be I love being on

[26:40] stage when I speak but when I'm done I

[26:42] want to be off I want to be gone yes you

[26:44] know I love having these conversations I

[26:45] love the fact that if there's some

[26:47] nugget that happens to Tumble out like I

[26:49] get to speak to incredible people like

[26:50] you and share whatever thoughts are on

[26:53] your mind with people who may in some

[26:54] way benefit and turn around and live

[26:55] better lives you know um

[26:59] but part of the reason why this show is

[27:00] largely interview format or conversation

[27:02] format is because I don't want it to be

[27:04] about

[27:05] me I don't have that need um but I know

[27:09] that from uh building and I've had this

[27:12] conversations with Publishers and I know

[27:13] you have also you know where that my

[27:15] first book there was I wasn't in the

[27:17] book anywhere and they're like no your

[27:20] your story has to lead and be woven

[27:23] throughout the whole thing and I said

[27:24] but I don't have any need to be that

[27:26] that to have that story there and they

[27:28] what you need to so it's always been

[27:30] this interesting dance

[27:32] mhm yeah well we need to hear your story

[27:34] so we can trust you yeah and I get and I

[27:37] get it like on intelligent level I

[27:38] totally get it um yeah anyway back to

[27:44] you I we were getting close to like roll

[27:46] reversal there I was going to be your

[27:48] shrink for a minute I don't have to pay

[27:51] you so so you're hanging out and you

[27:55] like you start down this whole new road

[27:56] and you're on this global trip of

[27:58] helping people in doing Fire Starter

[28:00] sessions and what's really cool is the

[28:02] fact you know I ask you where your proof

[28:03] and like and you're basically saying I'm

[28:05] showing up and the fact that I know that

[28:07] I'm smart I know that I can help people

[28:09] I know they can solve problems and if I

[28:11] can just get people in the room with me

[28:12] they'll get it like that and that's all

[28:15] I need um it's an amazing thing to do

[28:19] like do you own

[28:21] that H do I own that

[28:26] um I got my

[28:29] oxy

[28:31] yeah yeah is that just you or can people

[28:34] learn

[28:38] that I have I had a conversation

[28:41] recently about

[28:43] Charisma I don't think Charisma can be

[28:47] learned but I think magnetism can be

[28:49] learned so what's the difference um well

[28:53] my associations with Charisma and see

[28:56] the systems thinker in me really wants

[28:57] to nail down a definition like I really

[28:59] want us to all have buin about the

[29:01] definition of Charisma so we can measure

[29:03] things against it but for me Charisma is

[29:08] you know it's about Dynamic there's a

[29:10] Showmanship to it um

[29:14] um there's some theatrics to it there's

[29:18] performance and Charisma has a shadow

[29:20] side and it has a light side you can be

[29:23] a charismatic you know you can be a

[29:26] charismatic um

[29:29] not

[29:30] everybody you can't you can't even train

[29:33] somebody for that you can train someone

[29:35] to be a more articulate speaker right

[29:39] but I don't think um you know you're a

[29:42] good writer or you're not you you have

[29:44] the talent I really think Charisma is in

[29:46] the same bucket for me as Talent Natural

[29:49] Born talents magnetism my goodness

[29:52] different thing you can be not very

[29:55] charismatic at all you can be quite

[29:58] you can be quiet you can be behind the

[30:00] scenes you can be not Dynamic not

[30:03] engaging you can be incredibly

[30:05] magnetic

[30:08] um presence mag magnetism is really

[30:12] about presence Charisma you don't

[30:15] necessarily have to be present you can

[30:17] put on a

[30:18] show um that's the dark Charisma but

[30:22] magnetism is I'm here I'm listening I'm

[30:26] paying attention

[30:30] yeah it's quiet person in the room and

[30:31] you

[30:32] go you you're something vibing off of

[30:39] you yeah so you can build a system

[30:42] around that

[30:43] yeah are we documenting this cuz there's

[30:46] a new system there coming out

[30:51] soon formula it's like I know your head

[30:54] not to

[30:55] self um so as you're going around and

[30:59] and it's interesting because we could go

[31:00] on sort of like the whole Talent thing

[31:02] for a while now and there's so many such

[31:05] strong divides and strong opinions about

[31:06] that

[31:07] um the you know but I I kind of want to

[31:10] like keep moving on your journey because

[31:11] there's some really cool stuff to

[31:13] come as you're moving around and you're

[31:16] doing these Fire Starter sessions and

[31:18] you're learning and you're serving

[31:19] you're getting paid and you're building

[31:21] a business and you're building an

[31:22] audience and like you said and this

[31:25] becomes my first book you know this is

[31:27] essentially becomes you know a body of

[31:31] work so but take me a little bit deeper

[31:33] into it because it literally does you

[31:35] weren't just saying as a figure of

[31:36] speech it does become a bestselling book

[31:38] called the fire starter sessions

[31:40] so yeah well I'm I'm I'm like in living

[31:45] room number 12 jamming with a group of

[31:49] anywhere like you know 20 to 30

[31:51] entrepreneurs mostly women and like a

[31:53] handful of metrosexual men and um I

[31:58] realize nobody is giving themselves

[32:01] permission to want what they want forget

[32:05] about even going after it forget about

[32:08] executing like they're looking to me and

[32:11] each other like is it okay that I want

[32:13] to bust out is it okay that I want to

[32:16] make more is it okay that I want to

[32:19] retire like yeah it's all yes and I

[32:24] thought oh there's a gold vein in there

[32:28] of there's a nerve there and why is that

[32:32] why are we not giving ourselves

[32:34] permission to just want what we

[32:38] want and of course the magic comes in

[32:40] once you fully own your desires you know

[32:42] your synapses start firing at a

[32:44] different level and solutions start

[32:46] coming in and I think you start you

[32:49] start emanating something and the right

[32:52] people come in but I think until you

[32:54] fully want what you want you're going to

[32:57] be swimming

[32:58] Upstream it's funny recent I was having

[33:00] a conversation with someone recently

[33:03] who's um kind of legend in the music

[33:04] business and he was saying

[33:07] um you and and he's I'm not sure when

[33:10] this is going to air but he's in one of

[33:11] these conversations um and he was saying

[33:14] you know he learned at a very young

[33:16] age uh to ask for what he wanted mhm and

[33:21] when you do that very often you get it

[33:24] but we're just trained not to for some

[33:27] reason

[33:28] MH I don't know whether it's a a modesty

[33:30] thing or a humility thing MH or uh if I

[33:33] actually say it and it becomes real and

[33:36] then I don't get it then I have to deal

[33:39] with you know like what that's all about

[33:42] yes I call it the request

[33:44] muscle and I think it's the most

[33:46] atrophied muscle in in humanity really

[33:51] is we don't ask we ex we for for lots of

[33:56] reasons mostly it's fear driven but we

[33:59] don't ask we don't ask I think even I

[34:04] know in my own Journey like I've been

[34:06] reluctant to ask for some things in even

[34:08] a state of

[34:09] prayer like do I deserve it am I to this

[34:13] am I to that no I want

[34:17] it and then you go to the next level I

[34:19] want this with all my

[34:21] heart no matter how crazy it looks it is

[34:24] scary that's scary it is that's great I

[34:28] mean the place everybody goes is what if

[34:30] I don't get I

[34:32] know yeah I mean you're an insightful

[34:34] dude so it's I don't have to say that

[34:36] insightful but lots of people don't get

[34:39] that that full-on desire is really scary

[34:43] stuff so there's this Evolution from

[34:46] firear recessions to a focus on desire

[34:49] yeah and how people work yeah uh well I

[34:53] got tired about talking about making

[34:55] money and so that was of what most

[34:58] people would organically default to how

[35:01] do you mean what you say you got tired

[35:03] of talking about money like in a lot of

[35:05] the sessions you were doing and stuff

[35:06] like that well it's about

[35:07] entrepreneurship you know it's about

[35:09] building a business T to be the bottom

[35:11] line instead of hey what do I want out

[35:13] of life how you can hustle and I

[35:15] realized you know when I had my 500th

[35:17] conversation about how to get more

[35:20] people on Twitter I was just like and

[35:21] you know and whenever I have that that

[35:23] thought that crosses my mind of somebody

[35:25] could be doing this better than I can it

[35:27] I'm out I'm done time to move on so

[35:33] um about 8 years ago so this is the

[35:36] desire story I was doing some goal

[35:39] setting on New Year's Eve and I looked

[35:42] at all my stuff and I was like so

[35:43] uninspired this is

[35:45] boring and I just started writing

[35:47] feeling words so you know everything we

[35:49] new dining room table Hawaii pay off the

[35:53] MasterCard

[35:55] yawn and get another you know write five

[35:58] books that you or something

[36:00] and how about courage how about

[36:04] abundance how about sexy how about Earth

[36:06] how about natural whatever well that

[36:08] changed everything and I uh didn't think

[36:12] much about it but I thought about those

[36:14] words throughout the year and then I

[36:16] would write those words out on a little

[36:18] Post-It note that would sit in my daytim

[36:21] about five

[36:23] feelings

[36:25] and I would start planning my year

[36:27] around those five feelings and it

[36:30] changed my life feelings this is how I

[36:32] want to feel Y and it's what became my

[36:35] core desired

[36:37] feelings

[36:38] and that's the desire map and I Guinea

[36:42] pigged it I made these ugly white

[36:44] binders and I gave them to friends and I

[36:46] said ask yourself these questions and

[36:49] come up with four or five feelings and

[36:51] then make your

[36:52] plans see if you do a business plan

[36:54] according to these feelings my friends

[36:57] came back and like this works I want to

[37:00] set my goals according to these feelings

[37:03] now

[37:05] mhm so two things happened um well lot

[37:09] happened but that became a product a

[37:12] program an

[37:14] experience

[37:16] that just kind of flew out of me and I

[37:21] felt really useful I feel really useful

[37:24] I love that being in the world I feel

[37:26] really proud of it

[37:28] I'm also able to be proud of it because

[37:30] it's this flexible thing it's not me

[37:33] saying here's the right way it's just

[37:34] saying I have this idea that we're on to

[37:36] something with feelings and that this

[37:39] Fierce goal setting has got us off

[37:41] course do it in any way you want to do

[37:43] it that's the whole point is doing the

[37:46] pros has got to feel good so it's

[37:48] working and

[37:50] um that was a million-- dooll Post-It

[37:53] note that I put in my book had no idea

[37:56] at the time but uh it's been it's been a

[38:00] great success so what's the actual

[38:03] experience so the experience is you walk

[38:06] through four or five areas of your life

[38:09] you know wellness and relationships and

[38:13] your essence your spirituality and you

[38:17] do the stream of Consciousness about how

[38:18] you want to

[38:19] feel and then I kind of I push you I

[38:22] direct you a bit to say maybe it's let's

[38:26] go in this direction let's look under

[38:28] the word success cuz everybody want to

[38:29] feel

[38:30] successful um and the idea is that you

[38:33] get it down to this handful of

[38:35] words and you use those four or five

[38:39] core desired

[38:40] feelings to drive your planning so

[38:44] instead of I want the six figures I want

[38:47] the relationship I want the job whatever

[38:51] saying how do I want to feel and maybe

[38:54] you need the six figures to make you

[38:56] feel

[38:57] empowered or vital or energized maybe

[39:01] you don't maybe you need the house maybe

[39:04] maybe getting the house is the perfect

[39:06] thing for your core desire which is

[39:08] sense of

[39:09] community maybe you realize that owning

[39:13] a house has nothing to do it's actually

[39:15] antithetical to you wanting to be in

[39:17] community and you should forget saving

[39:19] up for a down payment and you should

[39:23] travel that's that's generally it and

[39:26] it's turning out to

[39:29] be like a real Paradigm Buster for

[39:31] people I mean talk about

[39:34] permission people say really it's just

[39:36] about feeling good yeah because every

[39:40] this is my theory every single thing

[39:42] you're doing this interview the clothes

[39:45] you wear the people you hang out with

[39:47] the food you eat is all about you

[39:50] wanting to feel good so why don't we get

[39:52] a little more specific about what

[39:54] wanting to feel good means and you do

[39:56] what whatever it takes to feel that way

[39:59] and I think that's when you become

[40:01] God which is interesting

[40:04] because my sense is a lot of people will

[40:08] have this reaction to this if it's all

[40:10] about me wanting to feel good then isn't

[40:14] that all about me me rather than and

[40:18] like my frame on this would be something

[40:21] like yeah it's interesting um you know

[40:25] the conversation is can you can can you

[40:27] do good in the world can you do act

[40:28] service can you serve Society community

[40:31] in some way leave the world a better

[40:32] place um but do it be through selfish

[40:37] means and and you Del L actually

[40:40] answered this question once and he said

[40:42] you know um is it okay to do that well

[40:45] yeah you know the net result is actually

[40:47] that you're still leaving the world a

[40:48] better place would be better maybe for

[40:50] your own experience had it come from

[40:52] more of a sense of selflessness sure but

[40:55] the net effect

[40:57] is still you know a PL positive impact

[41:00] on the world but it's interesting to me

[41:02] that your final your wrap up was then

[41:07] was God whereas most people will think

[41:10] God is you know 100% service it's about

[41:13] it's about um no longer being

[41:16] self-focused

[41:20] mhhh so I'm going to say something

[41:22] really

[41:23] lofty I think when you dedicate your

[41:26] life

[41:28] to

[41:29] love joy light it's all the same thing

[41:32] it's all the same

[41:35] thing you can't help but be of service

[41:38] that on a vibrational level you know

[41:42] you're you're vibrating at a higher

[41:43] frequency and that helps everybody that

[41:45] helps everybody you're going to be

[41:48] kinder You Will Be Kinder you will be

[41:50] more

[41:51] philanthropic you will be way more fun

[41:53] to be around and you know back to what I

[41:57] was saying at the the top of our time is

[41:59] like it really does become cyclical like

[42:02] you can't the service is so much joy

[42:05] you're like am I really being selfish by

[42:08] volunteering because I'm so happy at the

[42:09] soup kitchen you know like it's

[42:11] just do whatever it takes to be happy

[42:14] and you know what we're we also look at

[42:17] things in such um such a linear view so

[42:21] in my belief system I think we we come

[42:24] back many times so so if that's true for

[42:27] me that's that's what I'm buying into

[42:29] I'm putting my money on

[42:31] reincarnation who's to say that I

[42:33] haven't paid my dues for many lifetimes

[42:37] and this time is time for me to be

[42:40] served or this is the lifetime where I

[42:43] really just get to sit in a monastery

[42:46] and just chant and that is my that is my

[42:49] ecstasy maybe I get to be wealthy this

[42:52] lifetime because I've given so much away

[42:54] before like we just we don't know we

[42:57] have to leave room for mystery

[42:59] about what it means to serve about what

[43:03] it means

[43:06] to what's okay in terms of happiness

[43:13] and to lighten up a little bit lighten

[43:16] the [ __ ] up yeah see IR this is so

[43:20] ironic right but you know Enlightenment

[43:22] becomes so heavy no no God I'm done I'm

[43:26] so so done can we talk about graduating

[43:28] from self-help

[43:29] I'm I'm done I'm so done with

[43:35] self-improvement just hang out and smile

[43:39] Delight so love the conversation and you

[43:42] and I can jam and riy go on so many

[43:43] tangents here anyway um but it's kind of

[43:47] fascinating what you're up to all um can

[43:50] we talk about the magazine or it to yeah

[43:52] okay so one you know in your evolution

[43:54] of of solving and help helping people

[43:56] and serving all sorts of different ways

[43:59] um you also you have

[44:01] this incredible creative and visual side

[44:05] to you um that's it was evident in your

[44:09] earlier you like things that you explor

[44:11] like The Branding and things like that

[44:13] and when you look at anything that you

[44:15] create it's it's

[44:17] never text slapped onto a white page

[44:20] there's always Exquisite visual design

[44:23] attached to it so recently you decide

[44:27] that I'm going to launch a

[44:33] magazine because it's such a lowrisk

[44:36] industry and magazines are thriving

[44:39] right a print magazine yeah yeah print

[44:43] not even I don't even care about iPad

[44:45] everyone's like what do you do for like

[44:46] digital who cares I don't so what's is

[44:50] all

[44:52] about so you know you used to hear

[44:55] people like in a VOC ational context say

[44:57] things like I didn't choose it it chose

[45:01] me I never got that I always thought

[45:03] that was just like overly poetic I

[45:05] couldn't relate but the magazine chose

[45:08] me and um just started as it was an

[45:12] offshoot idea actually of Desire map you

[45:15] know when you get the desire map program

[45:17] you get a few months of sort of this

[45:20] newsletter format we thought what if we

[45:22] turn that into a magazine and then it

[45:23] was like what if we just

[45:26] made a

[45:28] magazine and I feel that my muse kept me

[45:33] naive I was in this bubble CU I was

[45:35] really thinking and this is this is

[45:38] silly because I'm a big thinker but I

[45:39] thought we'll print a few thousand

[45:41] copies we're just going to make this

[45:43] pretty substantive thing it'll be fine

[45:45] and then I got so deeply into it there

[45:48] was no turning

[45:50] back and it became clear advertising

[45:53] distribution barcodes an edit edor a

[45:56] creative director a production manager

[45:59] copy editors and it's Joy it's Bliss it

[46:03] is creative Bliss I'm I I I'm so I'm

[46:08] thrilled I'm thrilled and it's uh so you

[46:11] might be wondering what it is

[46:14] um it's what it's what me and my homies

[46:17] want to read it's what's not out there

[46:20] it really is what is not out there we we

[46:24] will not dummy down we will be beautiful

[46:27] we will be unabashedly spiritual we will

[46:31] love sex we will love money we will love

[46:34] clothes we will promote contemplation

[46:38] it's real life it's real life Faith and

[46:42] [ __ ] it all in one page yeah that's the

[46:46] subtitle for the magine yeah but I think

[46:49] I won't get into a Barnes & Noble might

[46:52] have trouble getting the sh's Target

[46:54] also Walmart

[46:56] I love it U I can't wait to see sort of

[46:58] like that Evolution uh I mean it's it's

[47:01] fun watching you because uh I never know

[47:04] what's going to come next but I know

[47:05] it's going to push buttons and push

[47:07] envelopes and push you push and when I

[47:10] see you pushing yourself it makes me

[47:13] want to dig a little bit deeper and not

[47:15] that like I'm you or not that I'm going

[47:17] to do the same thing but it's inspiring

[47:19] to see people not um rest on their

[47:24] Laurels um and that's one of the uh it's

[47:28] one of The Inspirations I draw from you

[47:31] thank you I thank you for thank you so

[47:33] the name of this project is good life

[47:34] project when I offer that term to you

[47:37] what comes up to live a good life oh

[47:40] love love

[47:47] just what's the most loving thing you

[47:50] can do for all of us

[47:54] today yeah

[47:57] beautiful thank you so much for the

[47:59] conversation oh thank you always fun

Preguntas Frecuentes

Desire Map is a framework LaPorte created that inverts traditional life planning. Instead of asking what you want to achieve, it starts with a core question: how do you want to feel? Once you identify your core desired feelings (powerful, creative, alive, connected), you use those as a compass to evaluate every decision—jobs, relationships, finances—measuring whether they align with how you actually want to experience life.
LaPorte sees formal education as a system that fits people into predefined boxes rather than evoking their essence. Schools use grades and standardized metrics to correct and conform, and critically, they never ask students how they want to feel. She believes people come fully formed and need nourishment of who they already are, not molding into someone else's shape.
LaPorte builds by first getting clear on her core desired feelings, then structuring work that honors those feelings. She refuses to measure success by ego, prestige, or even profit alone. Instead, she asks whether the work actually helps people and evokes authentic expression. This means she can walk away from speaking engagements without needing ongoing adulation—the work is complete when it's complete.
She argues charisma cannot be taught as a technique. True magnetism is genuine presence: being fully there, actually listening, and believing in the person in front of you. It's attention and faith made visible, not a learned performance. You either offer it or you don't.
LaPorte found nonprofits dysfunctional because they exist in constant fundraising crisis. They grub for money perpetually, which prevents them from building something sustainable based on the actual value of their work. She concluded that authentic work should be able to sustain itself—if it can't, the model is broken, not the mission.
Because she never attended university, she never internalized the unspoken rules and boxes that formal education creates. She wasn't limited by assumptions about how career progression should work. This allowed her to hustle unconventionally—bartending, radio, press releases—and build her own track rather than following a predetermined path.
