Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of ten books, among them Eat Pray Love and Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, which together have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. To many readers she is the woman who left a broken marriage and went looking for pleasure, devotion, and balance. That image is accurate but incomplete. Gilbert has spent her career as a working writer: a short-story author, journalist, novelist, biographer, and memoirist. Origins and Early Life

Gilbert was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and grew up on a small family Christmas tree farm. She went on to study political science at New York University, writing short stories by night. Her chosen field of study was not literature, and her real education in writing happened elsewhere.

After college she spent several years traveling the country, taking work in bars, diners, and on ranches. She was collecting experiences she hoped to turn into fiction. She wrote for publications including Spin, GQ, and The New York Times Magazine, and was a three-time finalist for the National Magazine Award. One of her GQ pieces, about bartending on the Lower East Side, became the basis for the film Coyote Ugly.

Her first novel, Stern Men, was a New York Times Notable Book. She then turned to nonfiction with The Last American Man, the true story of the woodsman Eustace Conway. The book was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Turning Point: Eat Pray Love

That changed with her 2006 memoir Eat Pray Love. The book follows her journey around the world in search of solace after a difficult divorce. It was translated into more than thirty languages and adapted into a 2010 film starring Julia Roberts. Some sources cite sales of over 12 million copies for the book alone.
