Spiritual Workshop

About This Event

Description

Sleep Alchemy is a five-day spiritual workshop on Daoist sleep practices at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. It is led by Simon Cox and Jeffrey S. Reid, who teach the Wudang Hibernating Dragon and Five Dragons Sleeping methods from the Sanfeng lineage. It suits anyone curious about sleep as a contemplative discipline rather than a nightly collapse, and about the Wudang Daoist tradition more broadly.

What to Expect

The workshop treats sleep as a practice of subtle awareness. You learn introductory Wudang sleeping methods to enter, sustain, and deepen sleep states, and you work with them directly during the sessions. Sleeping in class is encouraged. The teachers say snoring will be punished with five hundred years in Daoist hell, which gives a fair sense of the tone: relaxed, since the Dao is at ease.

Alongside the practice, the group explores classical Daoist stories, including Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream and Lü Dongbin's Yellow Millet Dream, which probe how thin the line between reality and illusion can be. There is also practical conversation within a Daoist framework about how food, lifestyle, and daily habits affect the quality of your rest. The aim is that you leave familiar with techniques to deepen sleep, support well-being, and meet the dream of life more lucidly.

The week begins on Monday with check-in after 2pm, room keys at 4pm, and an orientation called How to Drop into Esalen in the late afternoon. The workshop opens that evening, from 7:15 to 9:30pm. Tuesday through Thursday follow a steady rhythm: morning instruction from 9:30am to 12:30pm, then an afternoon session from 4:00pm until about 6:00 or 6:15pm. The afternoons move through Wudang methods, dreams and reality, and lifestyle integration. The final session runs Friday from 9:30am to noon, with lunch available until 2pm before you depart or stay on campus.

About Simon Cox

Simon Cox is a martial artist, scholar, and teacher trained at Wudang Mountain, the spiritual home of Daoist internal arts. He is a research fellow at Esalen's Center for Theory & Research and a visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School, and he is collaborating with Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy on a new book.

About Jeffrey S. Reid

Jeffrey S. Reid is a martial artist, author, and teacher dedicated to preserving and transmitting the Wudang Daoist tradition. He has trained extensively in martial arts, Daoist alchemy, and contemplative practices. He runs a Kung Fu school in Santa Cruz, California, where he helps students bring these practices into the uneven rhythms of modern life.

The Setting

Esalen Institute sits on the Big Sur coast, and your stay includes access to the hot springs and other campus features, along with the open classes on the weekly schedule. Meals are included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus coffee, tea, and snacks.

Accommodation ranges from budget to luxurious. At the simple end are sleeping bag space in a shared room for up to six guests, who bring their own bedding, and gender-inclusive bunk rooms with linens and a private bathroom. Standard rooms include shared rooms for up to three guests of the same gender, a private queen, and a private room with two double beds. Premium choices include queen and king rooms with ocean or forest views, a Premium Plus King with a private deck, a wooden Premium Yurt with an ocean-facing deck, and the Price House Suite, the historic former residence of Esalen co-founder Dick Price. Day passes and off-site stays are also offered.

Before You Go

No prior experience is required, since the workshop teaches introductory methods. Healing Arts sessions such as Esalen massage, specialty coffee and tea or bar alcohol, and bookstore purchases are not included. Esalen has noted that travel to and from northern Big Sur has at times relied on Highway 1 convoys at set hours, so check current road conditions when planning your arrival.

Common Questions

FAQs

They are Daoist sleep practices from the Wudang Sanfeng lineage, presented as ways to turn sleep into a discipline of subtle awareness and deep peace. Participants practice introductory versions of these methods to enter, sustain, and deepen sleep states.
Yes. The organizer says sleeping in class is encouraged, and the sessions include hands-on practice of Wudang sleeping methods rather than lecture alone. The description jokes that snoring will be punished with five hundred years in Daoist hell, so expect a relaxed tone.
Simon Cox and Jeffrey S. Reid co-lead the workshop. The source material doesn't give their biographies, so check the Esalen workshop page for details on their backgrounds before you register.
The workshop draws on Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream and Lü Dongbin's Yellow Millet Dream, which explore how slippery the line between reality and illusion can be. No prior reading is listed as required, but knowing these two tales will give you context for the cosmology discussions.
