Meditation Retreat

About This Event

Description

This weekend meditation retreat at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, brings together mindfulness, loving-kindness practice, and poetry in the Buddhist tradition. It is led by meditation teachers Hugh Byrne and Rebecca Hines, and it is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. It suits anyone who wants steadier ways to meet difficult times with courage, balance, and a little joy.

What to Expect

The retreat rests on the Buddha's teachings of wisdom and compassion, and it invites you to say "yes" to whatever your experience is. Through guided meditation, poetry, humor, and gentle movement, you will practice cultivating loving awareness amidst life's joys and sorrows, untangling from difficult emotions, and letting the beauty of poetry open the heart so you can live more fully in the present. You leave with practical tools for responding to challenges with balance and ease.

The program runs from a Friday arrival to a Sunday departure. On opening day, check-in begins at 2:00 pm, with a Kripalu Yoga class in the late afternoon, dinner, and a first program session from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Saturday is the full day of practice. It begins with a 6:30 am yoga class and a silent breakfast, followed by program sessions from 9:00 to 11:30 am and from 1:30 to 4:00 pm, with a short evening session from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. On Sunday, after morning yoga and silent breakfast, the closing session runs from 9:15 to 11:30 am, and lunch at 11:30 marks the departure. Times may shift, so the schedule given at check-in is the one to follow.

About Hugh Byrne

Hugh Byrne, PhD, is a teacher, trainer, and author on mindfulness and compassion for spiritual and social transformation, and a lead teacher at the Insight Meditation Community of Greater Washington. His path to meditation began with a passion for social justice. For more than twenty years he worked for human rights in Latin America and Africa and for U.S. policies that support equality and genuine development. He recalls the stress and separation that came from an "us" and "them" approach, and from being tightly tied to outcomes. Encountering Buddhist teachings, he came to see that how we work for change is essential to creating a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. He has more than thirty years of meditation and retreat practice and more than twenty years of teaching meditation, both Buddhist and secular.

The Setting

Kripalu is a center for yoga and health in Stockbridge, in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. Its accommodations are intentionally simple, meant to help you unplug and feel grounded. You can choose a private room for solitude or a shared, community-style dormitory room if you want connection with other guests. Rooms are ready by 4:00 pm, and a luggage room holds your bags until then.

Three nutritious meals are served each day, and vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can be accommodated on request. Breakfasts are silent. Check-out on the final day is at 10:00 am, and you may stay on campus and take part in the closing session and lunch, remaining until 2:00 pm.

Before You Go

No prior meditation experience is required. The retreat is taught in English.

Your stay includes accommodation, all program sessions and teachings, three daily meals, more than ten yoga classes each day across the campus, and access to the Kripalu grounds and facilities. Healing Arts sessions and items from the Kripalu Shop and Cafe are available for separate purchase. If the program is full, a waitlist is available.

FAQs

The program is co-led by meditation teachers Hugh Byrne and Rebecca Hines. Hugh Byrne, PhD, is a lead teacher at the Insight Meditation Community of Greater Washington (IMCW) and the author of The Here-and-Now Habit and Habit Swap.
The teachers draw on the Buddha's teachings of wisdom and compassion through meditation, loving-kindness practice, poetry, humor, and gentle movement. The stated aims are to cultivate loving awareness amid life's joys and sorrows, untangle from difficult emotions, and use poetry to open the heart and live more fully in the present.
Hugh's path to meditation began with a passion for social justice. He spent more than twenty years working for human rights in Latin America and Africa and for U.S. policies supporting equality and genuine development. He has described the stress and separation of an "us" versus "them" approach, and his teaching reflects the view that how we work for change matters.
They can be a helpful companion, though they aren't required. The Here-and-Now Habit and Habit Swap both draw on mindfulness and compassion, and they connect to his known themes of loving-kindness and habit change.
