About This Event

Description

Common Questions

FAQs

The Milindapañha ("Questions of King Milinda") is an early Buddhist text in Pali, written as a dialogue between the Indo-Greek king Milinda (generally identified with Menander I) and the monk Nāgasena. The king poses sharp, skeptical questions and the monk answers with analogies. Knowing this format helps you follow an event built around those questions.
The text is best known for its discussion of what a "self" is, using the image of a chariot that is nothing apart from its parts. It also takes up rebirth without a permanent soul, karma, and the nature of liberation. The event page doesn't list which passages will be covered, so check the description or ask the organizers if you want a particular one.
It isn't required, but a short look at the opening chapters, especially Nāgasena's chariot analogy, will make the discussion easier to follow. Several English translations exist, including T.W. Rhys Davids' older version and I.B. Horner's "Milinda's Questions". Any of them is enough for preparation.
It is held at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Pomaia, in the Tuscan countryside, a Tibetan Buddhist center in the FPMT tradition. It is a working study and retreat center, so expect a quiet, contemplative atmosphere rather than a conventional event hall. Check the event page for exact arrival and parking details.
