Music as the Carrier Wave of a New Earth

Meditation Mount
Meditation Mount

The International Garden of Peace at Meditation Mount in Ojai, California sits high above the valley floor, a vantage point that holds both loss and aspiration. It was here, in the hollow left by the Thomas Fire four years earlier, that a vision took shape: the scorched earth itself could become a sound bowl, an amphitheater where community could gather to "sing together and just join in this joyful dance of bringing in a new world as the old one falls away." On November 20th, 2021, that vision materialized as Isaac and Torold Koren—the Brothers Koren—arrived to perform, their voices and instruments understood not as entertainment but as what one host called "the carrier wave of the renaissance."

The premise underpinning the event, called "Muses on the Mount," invokes a lineage older than contemporary music: the idea that inspiration arrives from beyond the human ego. Robert Schumann, the host notes, was "absolutely clear that I was given this melody by the angels; I'm just here to transpose it." In this framework, the artist is less a creator than a conduit—a vessel through which something larger seeks expression. The Brothers Koren embrace this responsibility fully. They open with a song called "Thankful," its lyrics circling a central question: "How have we come to this when all I've ever seen is you?" The melody turns that inquiry inward, asking listeners not to admire performance but to recognize themselves as part of an unfinished answer.

Everyone Has a Voice the Universe Is Waiting to Hear

Central to the Brothers Koren's philosophy is a democratization of voice that runs counter to the professionalized spectacle of modern music. "We believe everyone has a voice that the world, the universe is waiting to hear," Isaac tells the gathered crowd, "and no one else sounds like you." The statement isn't motivational sentiment; it emerges from lived experience. Having spent careers in what they describe as "being those listened to, being those that people came to watch," their mission has shifted. Now their work is to "gather with all of you voices—with all of these instruments that you are, whether you've ever called yourself a voice or a singer or not."

This reframing of the human being as an instrument is not metaphorical. It shapes every moment of the gathering. When the Brothers Koren invite the audience to sing a simple melody—"when everything's changing, I wanna stay close"—they acknowledge the vulnerability such an invitation carries. "The person sitting next to you is more afraid than you of singing and wondering what you think of their voice," Torold says gently. "So don't even worry about it. Don't even get tangled up in that. Let's just sing together." The song swells, and something shifts: "Now we are one instrument there. There's more of that to come."

What Happens Now: Ritual and Remembrance

Two years before this November gathering, the Brothers Koren held a memorial at the same location for Isaac's son, Jack, who had passed away. Jack's ashes rest beneath a tall tree by the pond, marked by green supports—a living memorial in the same landscape that holds Meditation Mount's vision for renewal. It is from that crossroads, from the raw territory of grief, that a song titled "What Happens Now" emerged. The song doesn't offer comfort or resolution; instead, it asks the fundamental question that loss demands: "The edge is torn. The color's gone. I must move on. The courage now I call to rise above this wall."

When the Brothers Koren returned to sing "What Happens Now" in that same space, the gesture became more than performance. It became ritual—a return to the site of transformation, a way of honoring both what was lost and what continues. The song's narrative arc traces the underside of change: "Walking down the carpet streets / A city like shine bright / Let's plant the seeds tonight." There is no denial of darkness here, no spiritual bypass. Instead, there is the acknowledgment that "we don't choose what occurs for us; we choose how we show up for it, into it."

The Practice of Receptive Listening

As the sun begins to lower over the valley, the Brothers Koren guide the audience through a listening exercise that reorients attention itself. "So much of the voice is in listening," one notes. They invite people to extend their awareness to the ridges in the distance, to bring listening "all the way to the edge of your skin so that your hairs are standing on tippy toes." This is not passive consumption of sound. It is an active, embodied practice—one that requires participants to become as much instrument as the singers themselves.

The song "Everything's Changing" exemplifies this philosophy in action. Written during a time when the ground felt unstable—literally and figuratively—it moves through images of collapse and resilience: "When the ground is shaking, nothing is that fast. It's like you couldn't rely on love to keep you falling that fast." The repetition of "when everything's changing, I wanna stay close" becomes both anchor and prayer, a way of holding presence in the face of constant transformation. By inviting the audience to sing this refrain, the Brothers Koren transform a personal or collective anxiety into an act of communion.

Art as Remembrance and Seed-Planting

The gathering at Meditation Mount operates on multiple registers simultaneously. It is memorial, performance, teaching, and invitation. The Brothers Koren have spent years writing for other artists and exploring the space where music meets consciousness work. At its heart, their work rests on a radical belief: that the act of singing together—of allowing one's voice to join others in resonance—is itself a form of healing and co-creation. The vision articulated by the host, that the Thomas Fire's scar could be transmuted into a sound bowl, mirrors the larger work that grief and art accomplish together: the transformation of devastation into a gathering place.

In inviting the audience to sing, to listen with their whole bodies, to remember what was lost while planting seeds for what might come, the Brothers Koren enact a philosophy of voice that belongs neither to celebrity nor to the isolated self. Instead, voice becomes what it always was in older traditions: a technology of collective being, a way that humans synchronize with one another and with forces larger than any individual will. The song "Everything's Changing" names the condition of our time. The Brothers Koren's work suggests that what changes us is not silence or isolation, but the courage to stay close, to sing, and to listen together.

Where to go from here

To deepen this work in your own practice, begin with listening—not as background, but as an active, embodied skill. Try the exercise the Brothers Koren led: extend your awareness to the far edges of a space, then gradually draw it inward to the perimeter of your own skin. Notice what happens to your nervous system, your sense of aliveness. When you encounter change—loss, transition, uncertainty—ask yourself: "What happens now?" and "How do I show up?" rather than hoping for stability. If you sing, sing with others; if you don't, consider joining a community choir, a kirtan circle, or any gathering where the human voice becomes a shared instrument. The Brothers Koren's insight—that everyone has a voice the universe is waiting to hear—is not flattery. It is an ontological claim about what voice actually is: not a measure of technical skill, but a frequency through which being itself resonates.

[0:13] so

[0:17] welcome to meditation mount

[0:20] on a glorious day

[0:21] on planet earth

[0:24] we're here in the international garden

[0:26] of peace overlooking the ohio valley

[0:30] and this is where we're going to spend

[0:31] the next couple of hours immersed in

[0:34] sound immersed in beauty

[0:37] and

[0:38] the reason

[0:39] we're putting on this gathering called

[0:42] muses on the mount

[0:43] is because it is the arts that are the

[0:46] carrier wave

[0:47] of the renaissance

[0:51] one of the things we realized is that it

[0:53] isn't just us humans when it comes to

[0:55] inspiration and it comes to the arts

[0:59] we have to dance with the angels as well

[1:02] you can go back and look at some of the

[1:03] composers like schumann

[1:05] who absolutely was clear that i was

[1:07] given this melody by the angels i'm just

[1:10] here to transpose it so what we

[1:14] mean by muses on the mount

[1:17] all the muses whether it's poetry

[1:20] dance song

[1:23] so we're here

[1:25] to sing and dance to say and play the

[1:29] song lines of a new earth together

[1:32] and we

[1:34] with isaac and toro the brothers coren

[1:37] a couple of years ago we were thinking

[1:39] about how do you create a space where

[1:42] you can

[1:43] dance with the angels and bring in this

[1:45] new

[1:48] sound

[1:49] that is the new earth

[1:52] the thomas fire almost four years ago

[1:55] took out one of our residences it burnt

[1:57] it to the ground

[1:58] as you stand in the car park and look

[2:01] north

[2:03] if you appear over the edge

[2:06] there is a hollow there

[2:07] where the residence was and we stood in

[2:09] that hollow and said oh my gosh

[2:12] it's a sound bowl it's an amphitheater

[2:15] so one of the dreams for this coming

[2:17] year is to actually

[2:20] make that dream come true so we can

[2:22] create another space where we gather in

[2:24] community

[2:26] and we sing together

[2:27] and we just join in this joyful dance of

[2:31] bringing in a new world as the old one

[2:34] falls away

[2:36] so the arts for me as i say are the

[2:38] carrier wave

[2:39] of the renaissance

[2:42] and i can't think of two better

[2:44] representatives

[2:46] of

[2:46] the renaissance than isaac and toronto

[2:50] not only do they bring the the beauty

[2:53] and the magic of being human

[2:55] but when i listen to their words when i

[2:57] listen to their songs i already hear the

[2:59] angels inside

[3:02] so

[3:02] welcome to meditation mount my name is

[3:04] michael i'm one of the crew here

[3:07] i have great pleasure

[3:09] in introducing

[3:11] torold

[3:12] and isaac the brothers coren

[3:21] wow thank you michael that's a beautiful

[3:23] introduction we're honored and just

[3:26] truly grateful to

[3:28] have this privilege of being with you

[3:31] in this moment in this spot

[3:33] and uh

[3:35] my brother and i live here in the valley

[3:38] another privilege and uh i want to honor

[3:41] the first nations

[3:42] the chumash

[3:44] people the

[3:45] honorable

[3:47] owners of this land

[3:49] and uh just

[3:51] ground in with this first song

[3:53] it's called thankful

[4:01] [Music]

[4:10] how have we

[4:11] have we come

[4:13] to this

[4:18] when all i've ever seen

[4:21] is you're my friend

[4:24] [Music]

[4:27] with that wind

[4:29] my feet were taken off the ground

[4:32] [Music]

[4:34] but did yours

[4:38] or did your wings come out

[4:41] [Music]

[4:43] we better stop and

[4:45] be

[4:47] thankful

[4:52] for the

[4:54] gifts we share

[5:01] we better stop and

[5:04] be in this moment

[5:10] for tomorrow's too far

[5:13] [Music]

[5:14] away

[5:20] broken words

[5:22] he had broken ways

[5:27] and i'm thirsty with this air i love the

[5:31] fire but i yearn to change

[5:37] [Music]

[5:48] oh

[5:53] we better start

[5:56] and be

[5:58] thankful

[5:59] [Music]

[6:03] for the

[6:05] gifts we

[6:07] share

[6:11] we better stop and

[6:14] be in this moment

[6:20] for tomorrow is too far

[6:25] away

[6:27] [Music]

[6:32] [Laughter]

[6:36] [Music]

[6:44] hey

[6:45] [Music]

[7:01] away

[7:04] [Music]

[7:13] well welcome to each of you

[7:16] and it's our

[7:17] mission after a

[7:19] long career in being those listened to

[7:23] being those that people came to watch

[7:25] seeing it's our now mission to

[7:28] gather with all of you voices with all

[7:31] of these instruments that you are

[7:32] whether you've ever called yourself a

[7:34] voice or a singer or not

[7:36] uh our intention is to to be in

[7:38] gathering that each of us are

[7:39] instruments

[7:41] that need each other to be in resounding

[7:45] community so really the songs that we're

[7:47] going to sing this afternoon and as the

[7:49] sun lowers or close to anyway

[7:52] um

[7:52] are for all of you and for for you to be

[7:55] in with us to hold receptive space which

[7:57] we'll talk about as we get going

[8:00] thank you for your active uh

[8:02] listening listening and participation

[8:04] we're going to uh invite you to sing

[8:07] along with us in the middle of this song

[8:08] and

[8:09] just we are very compassionate with how

[8:12] already that uh request is a little

[8:15] scary and exciting at the same time for

[8:17] many of you

[8:19] um

[8:19] so this one we used to

[8:21] used to finish off our concerts we were

[8:24] fortunate enough to play some pretty big

[8:25] rooms and uh you can imagine with our

[8:28] drama we used to turn it up on this one

[8:30] but we're going to

[8:31] keep it restrained for this moment but

[8:35] let's see how we go

[8:36] the horses don't like to be pulled back

[8:38] too

[8:40] yes this is good everything's changing

[8:42] and everything always is right

[8:44] our mother here it's a rare occurrence

[8:47] to have her back in the country but uh

[8:49] her mother taught us that the only

[8:51] constant in life is change herself

[9:03] slowly i'm watching my feet i'm watching

[9:07] my feet as i'm falling

[9:11] into the moment

[9:15] i burn like quickening

[9:19] you're playing my heart laying my heart

[9:22] to the pulsing

[9:24] [Applause]

[9:26] generation

[9:29] when the ground is shaking nothing is

[9:33] that fast

[9:34] it's like you couldn't rely on love to

[9:38] keep you falling and so fast

[9:42] when everything's changing

[9:48] i wanna stay close when everything's

[9:51] changing

[9:53] [Music]

[9:55] i wanna cry out everything's changing

[10:02] [Music]

[10:16] to release it

[10:26] taken by the monkeys and dreamers

[10:30] he ready to lose it

[10:32] [Music]

[10:34] with images exploding in your mind

[10:39] it's like you couldn't rely on

[10:42] reasoning to get you through this time

[10:46] when everything's changing

[10:50] [Music]

[10:52] i wanna stay close when everything's

[10:55] changing

[10:55] [Music]

[10:59] i wanna cry out

[11:01] everything's changing

[11:07] like torrid was saying

[11:09] we believe everyone has a voice

[11:12] that the world the universe is waiting

[11:14] to hear

[11:16] and no one else sounds like you

[11:19] so

[11:20] and

[11:21] the person sitting next to you is more

[11:22] afraid than you of singing

[11:24] and wondering what you think of their

[11:26] voice so don't even worry about it don't

[11:28] even get tangled up in that

[11:29] let's just sing together sing after me

[11:31] it's real easy ready

[11:37] [Music]

[11:44] [Music]

[12:02] [Music]

[12:06] no

[12:12] [Music]

[12:22] when everything's

[12:30] everything's changing

[12:35] [Music]

[12:38] nice singing thank you

[12:42] now we are one instrument there we are

[12:45] there's more of that to come

[12:48] so two years ago uh

[12:51] this january coming

[12:53] um we we had a memorial here at

[12:55] meditation mound for my son who passed

[12:58] away his name was jack

[13:00] and uh he has this

[13:01] incredible

[13:03] gift of a tree where his ashes are

[13:06] right here by the pond you'll notice it

[13:08] as you leave and um please go say hello

[13:11] it's a tall tree with little green

[13:14] supports and it's right next to the pond

[13:16] what a spot to be

[13:19] and uh two years ago we sung

[13:22] this song

[13:25] on the heels of that moment you know

[13:27] about what happens now you know

[13:31] so it's very fitting to sing it again in

[13:34] the same space yeah nothing but just

[13:36] over here

[13:38] and uh everyone goes through crossroads

[13:40] and this song really was written as a

[13:41] crossroads not

[13:43] um while he was alive actually and uh it

[13:46] asks what happens now we begin again and

[13:48] we're always beginning again right no

[13:50] matter what we go through in life so

[13:51] this is for all of you as well

[13:54] and

[13:55] what a question it is we we don't choose

[13:58] what occurs for us we choose how we show

[14:00] up for it into it

[14:04] what happens now

[14:06] [Music]

[14:14] this common swan the edge is torn

[14:19] [Music]

[14:21] the color's gone i must move on

[14:27] the courage now i call

[14:31] to rise above this wall

[14:34] or castle's love now they must fall

[14:38] [Music]

[14:40] no compassion on my empty hat

[14:44] [Music]

[14:47] no footprints in the burning sand

[14:54] i must trust this car

[14:57] whether

[14:59] [Music]

[15:11] again

[15:13] what happens now

[15:21] what happens now on the path

[15:28] [Music]

[15:39] walking down the carpet streets

[15:42] [Music]

[15:45] a city like shine bright

[15:48] let's plant the seeds tonight

[15:52] must be soon before

[15:54] [Music]

[16:05] this new life is cast and

[16:07] [Music]

[16:11] our only second chance

[16:14] is painting us his prince

[16:18] naked our right crimson tide

[16:22] [Music]

[16:26] what

[16:27] happens again

[16:30] [Music]

[16:39] what happens now on the

[16:42] path what happens now

[16:46] [Music]

[16:57] now

[16:59] [Music]

[17:15] what happens now

[17:17] [Music]

[17:22] now

[17:27] what happens now

[17:30] [Music]

[17:34] what happens now

[17:36] [Music]

[17:40] what happens now

[17:57] i'm just gonna do this fun uh you know

[17:59] so much we find uh so much of the voice

[18:02] is in listening

[18:04] so let's just play this game for a

[18:05] second

[18:07] let's

[18:08] set our listening

[18:10] all the way to the ridge there and all

[18:12] the way to the ridge there i'll stop

[18:13] talking let's just go there for a moment

[18:33] beautiful now let's bring your listening

[18:35] all the way to the edge of your skin

[18:38] so that your

[18:40] hairs are standing on tippy toes

[18:55] beautiful that's where we want you to

[18:57] hear this song

[18:58] right on the edge it's called easy and

[19:00] uh our co-writer our lyricist the poet

[19:03] our mother

[19:05] uh penned this one and

[19:07] some of these that we're singing tonight

[19:09] we're very grateful

[19:11] for your genius

[19:15] [Music]

[19:28] settle down

[19:31] unwind

[19:33] see

[19:36] me

[19:38] feeling free

[19:40] a cup of tea

[19:45] please me

[19:48] better now

[19:50] your mind

[19:54] teases me

[19:58] slowly now

[20:00] but don't rush

[20:02] at least

[20:05] [Music]

[20:07] let your golden hair down

[20:10] let me drown roll me around and take me

[20:17] easy

[20:19] [Music]

[20:22] is

[20:24] [Music]

[20:39] life begins

[20:43] squeeze me

[20:46] i'll grieve you in

[20:53] [Music]

[21:00] i could

[21:01] die tonight

[21:05] let your golden head down

[21:08] let me drown me around and take me

[21:16] [Music]

[21:20] is

[21:23] [Music]

[21:43] ready

[21:49] [Music]

[22:17] right here

[22:23] wow

[22:24] so jack uh tarot's late son uh taught us

[22:29] deeply that everyone has a voice and

[22:32] even even he had a voice

[22:34] and uh whatever the doctors may have

[22:37] said we knew that he could hear

[22:39] and he could experience

[22:41] and he could make these sounds and it

[22:44] was profound to be around him he was

[22:46] such a teacher

[22:48] as his uncle i'm very proud and

[22:50] we would

[22:52] be with him at night

[22:53] and we got this request to write this

[22:55] album out of the blue

[22:57] from uh rockwood music hall in new york

[22:59] city where we cut our teeth

[23:02] in our 20s and 30s and um

[23:05] and we were writing

[23:07] in this

[23:08] this uh

[23:10] time this very different time for us and

[23:13] jack was there and we were playing and

[23:15] he would tune we could hear him tuning

[23:17] to the strings

[23:19] and then he would sing and he would

[23:20] always sing and key and so he gave us

[23:23] the first note of this song it's called

[23:24] more than you know

[23:26] and

[23:27] dedicated to his

[23:28] loving memory and

[23:32] wisdom that lives on

[23:37] [Music]

[23:42] i also just wanted to mention that part

[23:44] of

[23:44] jack's

[23:45] legacy is here at meditation mountain

[23:47] there's a memorial fund that helps

[23:49] continuously grow

[23:51] the protection of this incredible and

[23:53] growth and emergence of this place so

[23:56] thank you for being a part of that today

[23:57] already

[24:07] [Music]

[24:09] half in heaven

[24:13] here but not here

[24:18] take my life instead

[24:21] [Music]

[24:24] smash my armor

[24:28] rip my heart out

[24:33] this demons in my head

[24:37] [Music]

[24:41] darkness falls

[24:48] [Music]

[24:54] the sun

[24:55] will shine again

[24:59] [Music]

[25:01] with me

[25:09] you can't see me

[25:13] only feel me

[25:16] [Music]

[25:18] love is deep and bold

[25:24] show no mercy

[25:29] [Music]

[25:33] teach me oh you know

[25:36] [Music]

[25:39] you're the mirror

[25:41] [Music]

[25:43] seem to show me

[25:48] for ash's wings can

[25:51] grow

[25:53] [Music]

[26:05] more than you know

[26:09] [Music]

[26:13] more than you know

[26:18] [Music]

[26:26] [Music]

[26:28] you're so slashing

[26:32] a concert is crashing

[26:39] black to gold

[26:41] [Music]

[26:44] time is bending

[26:45] [Music]

[26:47] your lessons ended

[26:52] [Music]

[26:53] you force our eyes to see

[26:56] [Music]

[26:59] make me worthy

[27:02] to share your journey

[27:08] to set each other

[27:11] free

[27:14] [Music]

[27:26] [Music]

[27:32] more than you know

[27:35] [Music]

[27:40] more than you know

[27:45] [Music]

[27:48] than you know

[27:50] [Music]

[27:56] the sound has meaning

[28:00] desperate breathing

[28:06] remember questions like

[28:10] how

[28:12] do

[28:15] i say

[28:18] i

[28:20] love

[28:22] you

[28:31] thank you

[28:33] thank you so much for receiving that

[28:35] with us

[28:36] so

[28:38] my brother and i started out um

[28:39] following our

[28:41] mother to new york city a number of

[28:42] years ago

[28:44] um

[28:44] what was it 20 20 1

[28:47] 20 long time

[28:49] we've lost count

[28:51] and we came to new york uh

[28:54] slightly different times a couple years

[28:55] apart and we met back up in new york as

[28:57] brothers and

[29:00] we started harmonizing together this is

[29:02] now

[29:03] um probably 99 right

[29:06] and uh the question wasn't shall we sing

[29:08] together because we ha we can't how do

[29:09] we not we can't not because we've both

[29:11] gotten and found our voices and gone

[29:12] into music separately

[29:14] me kind of a musical

[29:16] nerd and uh

[29:18] isaac as a singer of a rock band

[29:20] and we came together and the rest is

[29:22] history we thought success would be a

[29:24] week away

[29:25] and we were in new york um naively

[29:28] convicted i think that it takes naivete

[29:30] a certain kind of naivete to have

[29:33] success in the music business you know

[29:35] the odds are stacked so you've got to

[29:36] have

[29:38] hopeful neighbor team so off we went and

[29:41] found the first show we could play in

[29:42] new york city um knowing no one it was

[29:45] like this open mic called the sidewalk

[29:47] cafe which is a monday night thing you

[29:48] have to sign up at 8 and wait till about

[29:50] 1 30 am to play one song and and instead

[29:54] of snowboard from there we just entirely

[29:56] committed you know played to five people

[29:58] and ten people and

[30:00] to beat around and then

[30:02] started touring regionally and change

[30:04] you know constantly evolving it became

[30:05] what was called the kin

[30:07] and uh this is our 21st anniversary of

[30:10] starting that brother project together

[30:12] which is amazing this year and coming

[30:14] thank you

[30:16] and of course we've always been the

[30:17] brothers coron but um

[30:19] after going from those ghosty dive bars

[30:21] to opening for coldplay and pink

[30:24] rod stewart we had you know sign on

[30:26] interscope we had really lived out a lot

[30:28] of our dream

[30:29] um missed some of it definitely we had

[30:32] high hope

[30:33] to get reach the top of the musical

[30:35] world and

[30:36] there was a different path that opened

[30:38] and on a break from touring we came out

[30:39] to la about seven years ago six years

[30:42] ago

[30:43] on a gut feeling to write and nurture

[30:45] and foster other voices

[30:47] and that's how we put it and people like

[30:49] oh you want to write for other people

[30:50] okay that's fine we're like that's not

[30:51] what we were saying but yes that's what

[30:53] it is so we came out and we started

[30:55] writing for artists some of which you've

[30:56] heard of

[30:57] in la some of which you haven't first

[30:59] time voices

[31:01] and two months into this la music

[31:03] experience we went same day we went this

[31:06] is not it is it

[31:08] and

[31:09] we were a bit concerned because we went

[31:11] to bed that night and both lost some

[31:13] sleep because we've moved both of our

[31:15] incredible families isaac's wife sophie

[31:17] is here and jules is here his son

[31:19] we're losing

[31:20] willa's here and my new baby maddie is

[31:22] here my wife ashley so we all were in la

[31:25] for this thing and so the next one we

[31:26] get in the car kind of sweating what is

[31:28] it if it's not this and we had one

[31:31] download idea together

[31:32] for an hour we got lost on a car ride

[31:34] and the idea came to us it said what if

[31:36] we became

[31:37] someone's brothers with their permission

[31:39] what if we went from inception

[31:41] across multiple stages to get to know

[31:43] who they were as a voice and what if we

[31:45] put together this guided experience that

[31:47] we wish someone had taken us on

[31:49] and then what if we take someone into

[31:51] the studio and capture their songs and

[31:53] be a part of that creation so we put it

[31:55] together

[31:56] in theory someone requested us two weeks

[31:59] it basically we scribbled it on a bit of

[32:01] paper that was floating around the car

[32:04] but someone did write to us on facebook

[32:06] two weeks later and said would you ever

[32:09] consider working with a first-time voice

[32:11] and we just were like wow this is

[32:13] too interesting so yes we said yes they

[32:16] flew out it was an incredible experience

[32:17] we and we based on our work on

[32:20] this one experience we were like oh this

[32:21] is it it's called the songwriters

[32:23] journey let's take let's do this and uh

[32:25] one after the other we did and um we're

[32:27] about over 200 humans

[32:30] um

[32:31] i can some of you have done some of our

[32:33] work with we now do whole programs and

[32:36] courses on the reclamation of voice

[32:38] and um the incredible medium of song

[32:41] that is meant for all of us

[32:43] and our work over the last six years has

[32:45] taken on a much wider

[32:48] approach but we've always been artists

[32:49] too so

[32:51] um we just wanted to tell you a little

[32:52] bit about our foundational route as we

[32:54] go into this next voice experience which

[32:56] actually meant for all of us together

[32:59] that we truly believe

[33:01] that each of you have been gifted this

[33:03] whole body instrument

[33:06] an instrument of peace like michael

[33:08] would we're having a beautiful

[33:08] conversation about that today an

[33:10] instrument that was designed by nature

[33:12] to be a acoustic instrument to sound out

[33:15] what it feels like to be you

[33:17] in every moment

[33:18] and to receptively take in as this as

[33:21] the language of experience this

[33:22] incredible opportunity to feel what it

[33:24] feels like to take in to sound out to

[33:27] take in we see the voice is 50

[33:29] expressive and 50 receptive

[33:32] and we just want to lead you in an

[33:33] experience and we'll see where it takes

[33:35] us because we're making this up right

[33:37] the next step is always unknown

[33:41] and we we discovered that there's sounds

[33:43] to the body to wake the body up to warm

[33:45] in instead of warming up we like to call

[33:47] it warming in

[33:49] and you know there's many modalities out

[33:51] there with you know uh ancient sanskrit

[33:54] words we've just kind of used

[33:57] these came to us with a friend eileen

[33:59] day mccusick who's uh

[34:02] an expert in the bio

[34:03] tuning the bio field and these sounds

[34:06] just came to us

[34:08] and they are basic human sounds and

[34:10] human sounds that you make every day and

[34:12] so we're interested in how they've

[34:15] located themselves and how they resonate

[34:17] the body so

[34:19] um we call it dad a suck which is our

[34:23] invitation to you which is making the

[34:24] next sound and daring to suck being okay

[34:28] in the discomfort of someone might hear

[34:30] my voice including me you know we are

[34:32] our our worst uh you know enemies when

[34:35] it comes to our

[34:36] self-judgment so

[34:38] we're very compassionate with

[34:39] first-timers well the good news is

[34:41] you're all there's no one more

[34:43] experienced

[34:44] at you than you in fact you're the lucky

[34:46] one recipient of your vantage point

[34:48] right you're now here no one ever can

[34:51] try on the only language you need to

[34:53] really

[34:54] be home in your voice

[34:55] is the willingness to feel

[34:58] the willingness to taste the willingness

[35:00] to be at home in this fun park this

[35:03] carnival

[35:04] that you get to feel and when you feel

[35:07] it and when you allow it to be felt and

[35:09] sounded you are opening this doorway

[35:11] that you have the key for

[35:14] and we're going to meet you there so if

[35:16] you wish to join us um please close your

[35:18] eyes just for a moment and at any other

[35:20] time please feel free to add eyes back

[35:23] to your experience

[35:24] the eyes can either watch or they can

[35:26] drink in experience

[35:29] and as you allow yourself to

[35:32] just come home

[35:33] and you welcome yourself home in this

[35:35] body you've been gifted that accreted

[35:37] together in your mother

[35:41] from universal elements that was

[35:42] designed by nature to be

[35:45] an acoustic instrument just like this

[35:47] guitar and as you allow yourself to

[35:49] relax back within this container

[35:51] that was built just for you for a finite

[35:53] period of time

[35:54] how does it feel now

[35:56] can you allow yourself to relax and

[35:59] embrace as you are

[36:01] right now this afternoon

[36:04] and in this moment what does it feel

[36:05] like to have this incredible playground

[36:07] of the face to be behind

[36:09] what does it feel like to have shoulders

[36:12] does it feel like to allow that

[36:13] that heart space to soften that

[36:16] that chest and then down into this belly

[36:18] can you allow yourself to be what we

[36:20] like to call fat and happy expansive

[36:23] pliable

[36:25] can you expand into that belly

[36:27] even though we've been taught the

[36:28] opposite and can you allow that belly to

[36:30] fall away freely too

[36:34] and just like isaac's doing can you and

[36:36] join us in this exhale this electric

[36:38] exhale out of your mouth

[36:44] i contained therein as every note that

[36:45] you'll ever sound

[36:48] inhale

[36:52] [Music]

[36:56] i feel that electromagnetic energy

[36:58] building up in

[37:00] the belly as you expand into it and then

[37:03] contract it bring it to your spine

[37:08] just letting these cords wash over you

[37:11] as you breathe your instrument

[37:13] alive

[37:17] [Music]

[37:20] and then whenever

[37:21] you're ready on the next exhale

[37:24] allow sound to be born into any sound ah

[37:28] any sound ah whenever you're ready

[37:38] [Music]

[37:40] leaning into what it feels like who

[37:42] cares what it sounds like what does it

[37:44] feel like follow that feeling

[37:50] [Music]

[37:55] now

[37:56] [Music]

[38:09] beautiful so we're going to come up

[38:11] into the foundation

[38:12] the root chakra perhaps you could call

[38:14] it

[38:15] with any sound war and just feel the

[38:17] ground your connection to it below you

[38:20] with the sound war

[38:24] [Music]

[38:36] [Music]

[38:42] [Music]

[38:46] whatever that emotion is that's arising

[38:47] can you lean in if it's bliss fantastic

[38:50] if it's grief

[38:53] [Music]

[39:10] let's bring that energy all the way up

[39:12] into the belly button right behind the

[39:14] belly button into that belly

[39:16] area where you're breathing where that

[39:17] perhaps the nervous or the excited the

[39:20] human energy is building up

[39:22] and the sonic anatomy sound here that we

[39:24] discovered was you

[39:26] allowing yourself to expand in here we

[39:27] go you

[39:32] [Music]

[39:40] finding that edge

[39:45] [Music]

[39:52] allow yourself to maybe play with the

[39:53] note

[39:54] have it be playful with it

[40:07] [Music]

[40:08] now we're just going to continue to

[40:10] venture upward

[40:11] up the sonic anatomy to the heart space

[40:14] the heart is a cavity to resonate your

[40:16] home of resonance

[40:18] and the front unfurling of the heart

[40:20] sound here is yah

[40:22] [Music]

[40:37] yes

[40:40] [Music]

[41:00] gonna bring it up now into the throat

[41:02] if you have any tension in the throat

[41:04] let it

[41:05] melt into this sound

[41:08] and he sound

[41:13] [Music]

[41:19] hard open up your face your eyebrows

[41:22] your mouth

[41:25] [Music]

[41:34] hey

[41:38] [Music]

[41:49] yes it just wants to open

[41:51] i'm going to venture up into the

[41:52] playground of the face maybe the least

[41:54] ventured

[41:56] place for someone who hasn't spent their

[41:58] life

[41:59] encouraging themselves to sing one of

[42:01] the least places that we've been invited

[42:03] to is being

[42:05] inappropriate and ridiculous in the face

[42:08] that our face was being it was designed

[42:10] to be wild

[42:12] not appropriate

[42:13] can we invite

[42:15] resonance to play

[42:17] all through the space through the teeth

[42:19] through the mouth through the jaws

[42:20] through the nose right above here we go

[42:22] any sound air air

[42:26] [Music]

[42:35] r

[42:36] [Music]

[42:52] [Music]

[43:02] let's bring it all the way to the top of

[43:03] our head now as if we're drinking from

[43:06] space above us through a straw

[43:09] and just feeling that central channel

[43:11] pass all the way down from above to

[43:13] below with any sound e and see if you

[43:16] can allow the smile to create that sound

[43:18] and really this big smile

[43:21] you can find your top note if you like

[43:26] [Music]

[43:48] [Music]

[43:58] yeah last but not least we're going to

[43:59] arrive in the field

[44:02] the field of resonance that we all

[44:05] are holding together but first and

[44:06] foremost we hold our own

[44:09] we come home to our own and all around

[44:11] you is this incredible electromagnetic

[44:12] field this acoustic chamber

[44:15] it's biofuel missing into that outskirts

[44:17] in six directions all around you this

[44:19] portable marble bathroom that you have

[44:21] at your disposal as this instrument you

[44:23] are

[44:24] and the sound or the sonic anatomy sound

[44:26] we found here is i

[44:28] [Music]

[44:47] letting it pulse like isaac

[44:54] [Music]

[45:16] whether you're feeling that now joining

[45:18] your incredible field with the field of

[45:20] this viewpoint this field of all these

[45:22] beautiful instruments these humans next

[45:28] [Music]

[45:44] he gone

[45:48] [Music]

[45:58] sounds like one eye to me

[46:02] [Music]

[46:05] let's stay in this silence

[46:07] and just take in your voice welcome at

[46:10] home

[46:14] do you feel

[46:37] thank you that was my favorite song for

[46:40] tonight

[46:44] we have a dream

[46:45] with michael

[46:47] uh and we wanted to share the seed of

[46:50] this dream

[46:51] the dream is a community singing

[46:53] together here on the mount

[46:56] in a sound bowl

[46:58] that uh

[46:59] michael mentioned

[47:00] in the place of that burnt out

[47:03] uh

[47:04] residence

[47:05] so imagine it can you imagine it we can

[47:08] we'd love to bring you into that

[47:10] conversation of possibility

[47:15] well

[47:16] the burning down of a residence

[47:19] allowed a space for resonance

[47:25] what else can you say

[47:28] we are artists in resonance

[47:31] artists in residence on earth

[47:34] and our task is to sing in the song

[47:37] lines of the new earth together because

[47:39] in the music

[47:41] is the formula

[47:43] the formula containing the dreams of

[47:45] what's to come

[47:47] we are the instruments that bring them

[47:48] through

[47:49] that play the song

[47:51] not just by ourselves

[47:53] but with the muses with the angels with

[47:56] the birds

[47:57] we sing in a full spectrum choir called

[48:00] gaia

[48:06] whatever beautiful was so our dream is

[48:08] that our dream is that somehow the plans

[48:11] to this

[48:12] bowl will be

[48:13] taken and designed and made real

[48:16] physical

[48:17] and it will reflect all of our voices

[48:19] we'll come and gather and sing together

[48:22] as we were designed to

[48:25] as we're longing for um and yet it's

[48:28] just that that amount scary but this

[48:30] ball will kind of hold us that's the

[48:32] intention

[48:33] and uh connect to a greater voice you

[48:36] know through this valley we

[48:38] we are like

[48:40] a telephone to the the core of this

[48:43] i think i feel more

[48:45] i feel more coming from

[48:48] we're giving voice to

[48:50] is the voice of our shared humanity

[48:53] and it has so many different tones so

[48:55] many different colors that it needs all

[48:57] of us to sing it

[48:59] and we want to create a space here

[49:01] where it can be heard where it can be

[49:03] felt where it can incarnate it can

[49:07] intonate

[49:10] we'll offer this song yes

[49:13] so it is uh we'll offer this song

[49:17] [Music]

[49:20] pulling an order

[49:23] well especially after what michael said

[49:25] so let's take this love

[49:28] so we haven't played this song um

[49:31] i think once in 15 years

[49:34] and uh it came as a

[49:36] single download when we're making an

[49:39] album that we made as the king called

[49:41] rise and fall our favorite can happen

[49:43] for sure and we set up for a couple

[49:45] months at this 40 acre farmhouse in

[49:47] pennsylvania it was a dream come true we

[49:50] had all these instruments it was just us

[49:51] and a producer

[49:53] and

[49:54] this song came through one night and

[49:57] there's a few songs that i've had the

[49:58] pleasure of being able to feel that came

[50:01] through

[50:02] uh that was what felt like a

[50:05] total astonishment because there's not

[50:08] no way i wrote this there's no chance

[50:10] that i thought about this song and the

[50:12] night that it came through we were

[50:14] sitting down writing the rest of it

[50:15] together that night this most incredible

[50:18] thing happened uh

[50:20] there was an absolute presence of a

[50:22] woman that entered the room and came

[50:24] right next to in bed next to me with my

[50:28] now wife who also knew it was happening

[50:31] it was this visitation of spirit through

[50:33] this song and it's

[50:34] it's called nowhere to now hear and i i

[50:37] to this day

[50:39] can remember the feeling and know

[50:40] nothing else other than

[50:42] that that presence brought this song

[50:45] from nowhere to now

[50:53] here she moves me

[50:58] she takes me in

[51:00] [Music]

[51:02] it

[51:03] feels

[51:04] [Music]

[51:07] like the

[51:09] first time

[51:13] [Music]

[51:17] now she's beside me

[51:18] [Music]

[51:20] i feel i could die tonight

[51:25] it feels

[51:26] [Music]

[51:30] like this love keeps me alive

[51:34] [Music]

[51:39] take this love

[51:43] it calls your name

[51:46] no need to walk alone

[51:50] [Music]

[51:54] change has come

[51:58] while come in

[52:02] no need to walk alone

[52:06] from nowhere now here

[52:11] now she's beside me

[52:14] i feel like i'd die tonight

[52:19] she

[52:20] wakes me

[52:22] [Music]

[52:24] wakes me up just in time

[52:28] [Music]

[52:35] i don't remember the next word but

[52:36] that's okay it's the first time in like

[52:38] 15 years second time

[52:40] but we're ready to sing this chorus

[52:42] take this

[52:44] [Music]

[52:47] your name

[52:48] [Music]

[52:49] no need to walk alone

[52:53] from nowhere and now here

[52:57] change has come

[53:07] [Music]

[53:21] no need to walk alone

[53:24] from nowhere now here

[53:32] [Music]

[53:36] no need to walk alone

[53:40] from nowhere

[53:43] [Music]

[53:58] here

[54:12] well this isn't fun at all

[54:16] sorry every night again i feel very

[54:17] australian about saying a line like that

[54:20] the other option was boring which was

[54:22] not was from we just learned from this

[54:24] other friend of ours i like the mind one

[54:26] better but i think so

[54:29] ah well let's sing a song

[54:31] let's sing a song of abraham yeah okay i

[54:34] wrote this song it's a

[54:35] it's a song for peace it's a story of

[54:38] two brothers that have been fighting

[54:40] for over two thousand years and uh but

[54:42] really it's a call to

[54:45] that peace inside

[54:48] it's called abraham

[54:53] um

[54:59] [Music]

[55:06] there's a tale

[55:08] told by sailors

[55:11] of two sons and their father

[55:15] as they sail

[55:17] to old palestine

[55:23] true

[55:25] were these brothers

[55:27] they sealed to bury their father

[55:31] they would

[55:32] fight

[55:33] for jerusalem

[55:39] you will be meek when i am able

[55:43] but you'll be the salt upon the table

[55:52] [Music]

[55:58] i was told

[56:00] by a stranger

[56:02] a young blood from to the desert

[56:06] he

[56:07] united

[56:09] a people

[56:10] with his hands

[56:14] in the way

[56:17] to the crescent

[56:19] he failed the light to the fast

[56:23] he was straight

[56:25] to the spring of

[56:28] sims

[56:31] you will be meek when i am able

[56:36] that you'll be the salt upon the table

[56:40] when all is said and done could you

[56:43] somehow be the sons of abraham

[56:48] you will be meek when i

[56:51] met you'll be the salt on the table

[56:56] when i

[56:58] [Music]

[57:04] [Music]

[57:08] there's a tale

[57:10] told by soldiers

[57:18] [Music]

[57:24] he

[57:25] was prized and protected

[57:30] prince was he elected

[57:34] he was to save

[57:36] the wolves

[57:38] [Music]

[57:42] you will be meek when i am able

[57:47] you'll be the salt upon the table

[57:51] but when all is said and done could you

[57:55] somehow be sons of april

[57:58] [Music]

[58:00] you helping me when i may

[58:04] you'll be the salt upon the table but

[58:08] when all this said and done could you

[58:12] somehow be sons

[58:15] [Music]

[58:18] away

[58:23] perhaps

[58:27] [Music]

[58:46] um

[58:50] feels like we're going deeper and deeper

[58:52] and and more and more inward in this set

[58:56] as the sun sets uh

[58:58] instead of kind of more energy so

[59:01] we're gonna

[59:02] we're gonna we're gonna leave you with

[59:04] this one

[59:06] and uh this song is a

[59:09] it's about the marriage

[59:10] the wedding the aeroskarmas the sacred

[59:14] wedding that happens

[59:16] the love affair inside that we

[59:19] get to have this lifetime

[59:21] and singing uh

[59:23] is is our doorway to that love affair

[59:26] and uh we invite you to experience that

[59:28] too of course and thank you for singing

[59:30] with us today we'd love to do more of

[59:33] this and as we gather the momentum

[59:36] towards this

[59:38] sound bowl

[59:39] so we can

[59:41] gather in in

[59:44] more in more presence

[59:47] and stay tuned obviously because

[59:49] we'll very much be back

[59:51] maybe quite often to hold court

[59:54] in this way together so we hope you join

[59:56] us with

[59:57] as the voice that you are again here at

[59:59] meditation mount

[1:00:01] next year

[1:00:03] there you go cod ship

[1:00:05] there it is

[1:00:08] thank you so much for being with us

[1:00:10] i just wanted to say about this song one

[1:00:11] little thing at the time this came

[1:00:13] through uh i would you could consider

[1:00:16] that i was uh anti-marriage at the time

[1:00:19] uh just you know playing with

[1:00:22] um being

[1:00:24] free to not choose formality

[1:00:28] this particular good rebel i woke up i

[1:00:30] woke up and luckily i was listening but

[1:00:33] i woke up and i went to the piano and i

[1:00:35] i heard the first beginning of this song

[1:00:37] and i

[1:00:37] i started playing it and i i stopped

[1:00:40] doing

[1:00:41] oh

[1:00:41] this is a union song and then something

[1:00:43] came to me was like this is a wedding

[1:00:45] song and i was just like really

[1:00:47] of course i admitted to isaac and then

[1:00:49] within that same day sophie

[1:00:52] and ashley both helped

[1:00:54] us write some lyrics into this song so

[1:00:56] we started kind of came together and

[1:00:58] wrote this song about walking into the

[1:00:59] wild

[1:01:00] into the wilderness together you know

[1:01:03] um which is so beautiful so thank you

[1:01:04] sophie thank you ashley

[1:01:11] [Music]

[1:01:17] [Music]

[1:01:23] oh

[1:01:24] finally on the stove

[1:01:28] waiting on the fire beneath the walls to

[1:01:33] ignite

[1:01:37] and say

[1:01:39] i promised to be more

[1:01:42] i could only stand to know that i'd fall

[1:01:48] in your arms

[1:01:50] [Music]

[1:01:57] we've danced a hundred times to feel the

[1:02:01] warmth of our collide

[1:02:07] and so

[1:02:09] with everything we know

[1:02:12] we're turning out our gaze to walk the

[1:02:17] way

[1:02:18] side by side

[1:02:26] these

[1:02:27] walls the two of us are agreed to walk

[1:02:32] the way

[1:02:33] [Music]

[1:02:46] we've sewn two hands in trending gold

[1:02:52] weighing up a fed against the hearts we

[1:02:57] have entwined

[1:03:02] hold

[1:03:04] the hollow of this cup

[1:03:08] at least can feel the visions of today

[1:03:12] turned into

[1:03:14] [Music]

[1:03:24] the two of us agreed to walk the way

[1:03:29] beyond

[1:03:30] [Music]

[1:03:40] the two of us agreed to walk away

[1:03:47] [Music]

[1:04:22] as soon as we keep playing these claws

[1:04:23] this

[1:04:26] sing together one more time let's try

[1:04:29] let's just arrive back in that

[1:04:31] unfurling of the front of the heart yeah

[1:04:34] [Music]

[1:04:51] please invite your voice to come play on

[1:04:54] the winds of

[1:04:56] your voice let melody arise if it's

[1:04:58] calling you

[1:04:59] this is a beautiful time to do that

[1:05:03] [Music]

[1:05:11] beautiful

[1:05:24] yes

[1:05:26] [Music]

[1:05:48] i certainly can't help but hearing

[1:05:50] don't let this song

[1:05:53] go down on me

[1:05:56] don't let this song

[1:05:58] but please let this song

[1:06:00] rise again hopefully what's a good lyric

[1:06:03] to sing to the song anyone got one

[1:06:06] what was that lyric

[1:06:09] memories rise

[1:06:11] sun goes down

[1:06:21] [Music]

[1:06:28] okay

[1:06:30] [Music]

[1:06:40] that's nice what's the next line

[1:06:45] great

[1:06:47] for the day

[1:06:50] [Music]

[1:07:02] see

[1:07:05] to the sun

[1:07:07] [Music]

[1:07:14] let's sing that together ready sing to

[1:07:16] the song

[1:07:22] [Music]

[1:07:43] if you just want to sing

[1:07:47] [Music]

[1:07:56] when you reach the edge of your breath

[1:07:58] allow yourself to feel back up again and

[1:07:59] begin again to begin again like the sun

[1:08:01] doesn't

[1:08:04] [Music]

[1:08:13] already

[1:08:31] do

[1:08:57] thank you

[1:09:02] please feel free to remain here

[1:09:05] to take in to drink in more of the

[1:09:07] beauty of the sun

[1:09:08] if you wish the terrace outside the

[1:09:10] auditorium is also a place that offers a

[1:09:13] beautiful view

[1:09:15] and i know carrie is also welcoming you

[1:09:17] inside the store but

[1:09:19] the most important thing is to

[1:09:22] deepen your relationship with yourself

[1:09:25] and with each other because we've got a

[1:09:27] lot of songs to sing

[1:09:29] from now on

[1:09:30] and i'd want to say thank you to isaac

[1:09:32] and toro the brothers corin

[1:09:39] and to their mother who

[1:09:42] who apparently is a source of

[1:09:44] inspiration

[1:09:50] thank you so please feel free to

[1:09:54] be wherever you need to be

[1:09:56] until the descent of dusk

[1:10:13] you

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the Brothers Koren, this means that your unique sound—your way of expressing through voice and presence—is irreplaceable and needed in the collective whole. It's not about technical ability or performance skill; it's about the frequency and essence you bring to shared sound. No one else sounds like you, and that singularity is what the universe seeks to hear.
Begin by extending your awareness outward—imagine your listening reaching to the horizon, the ridges in the distance, the edges of a room. Then gradually bring that listening inward, all the way to the edge of your skin, so that even your hairs feel alert. This active, embodied practice transforms listening from passive reception into a participatory act that changes your nervous system and sense of presence.
The song emerged from the Brothers Koren's experience of profound loss—the death of Isaac's son, Jack. Rather than offering false comfort, it asks the essential question that grief demands: "What happens now?" and emphasizes that while we don't choose what happens to us, we do choose how we show up in response. It has become a ritual of remembrance and transformation at Meditation Mount.
When humans synchronize their voices in a shared space, they create a collective resonance that transcends individual isolation. The Brothers Koren teach that in singing together, each person becomes an instrument necessary to the whole—a practice that shifts listeners from spectators to active participants in co-creation, which itself is healing and community-building.
The song names the fundamental condition of our time—constant, destabilizing change—without offering escape. Instead, it offers a practice: "when everything's changing, I wanna stay close." The message is that amid transformation and uncertainty, proximity to others and presence is both the challenge and the anchor.
They see the artist not as a creator seeking attention, but as a conduit for something larger—echoing Robert Schumann's insight that melodies are "given by the angels" and the artist is simply there to "transpose it." Their mission has shifted from being "those listened to" toward being facilitators of collective voice and remembrance.
