What Triggers You Is a Gift:Finding Freedom in Your Reactions

Peter Crone
Peter Crone
Sep 9, 2024
12 min read

Peter Crone teaches that triggers are not problems to avoid but gifts that expose where you lack freedom—specifically, where you've made unconscious contracts with past caregivers that now govern your behavior. Using a live example of a woman triggered by her roommate's workout intensity, Crone traces the trigger back to childhood experiences of loud, overbearing parental energy, then reveals how she unconsciously attracted this roommate to recreate and resolve that original dynamic. The core insight: the betrayal isn't of separation from others, but separation from yourself—the scared inner child asking you to create safety instead of trying to control external circumstances.

What Does It Mean That Triggers Are Gifts?

At the foundation of Crone's teaching lies a radical reframing: the things that trigger you in life are actually gifts (0:00). They are not flaws, failures of emotional maturity, or signs that something is wrong with you. Instead, triggers function as a diagnostic tool. When someone says or does something that provokes a strong emotional reaction in you—annoyance, fear, anger, shame—that reaction points to a place where you are not free. It indicates an invisible prison deep in your subconscious, a limitation on your autonomy that you have not yet recognized.

This invitation to view triggers as gifts requires a shift in perspective. Most people experience triggers as unwelcome intrusions—moments when they lose composure, feel defensive, or act in ways they later regret. Crone's framework suggests instead that these moments are invitations to investigate what part of you feels trapped, what belief about yourself or the world you are defending, and what early wound is being activated.

The purpose of this investigation is not self-blame. Rather, it is freedom. Once you locate the invisible prison—the unconscious contract or fear that generates the trigger—you have the option to step out of it.

The Unconscious Contract: How You Betrayed Yourself in Childhood

Crone describes what he calls the first primordial wound (5:25): the moment in early childhood when you betray yourself. This wound is not inflicted by a caregiver's malice, but by your own adaptive response to their presence. As a young child, you observe your caregivers—their moods, their needs, their reactions—and you form an unspoken contract: if you keep me safe, I will behave in the way that I think you want me to behave (5:25). The emphasis falls on I think, because you are a child making assumptions about what your caregivers need based on limited information and high stakes.

Why do you make this contract? From the perspective of your primal DNA, if you are expelled from the family system, if you fail to align yourself with what your caregivers appear to want, you face existential danger. You will be kicked out into the jungle and you will not survive. This is not a rational calculation—it is a biological imperative encoded in your nervous system.

The result is that you generate an identity, a persona, a set of behaviors designed to keep you safe. You become the good girl, the bad boy, the peacemaker, the rebel, the high achiever (5:40)—whatever you believed would prevent excommunication from your family. And in doing so, you betray the part of you that has authentic needs, fears, desires, and boundaries. You subordinate that inner child to the task of pleasing, predicting, and managing your caregivers.

This betrayal is the wound. Not what your parents did, but what you decided to do to yourself in response.

How Triggers Reveal the Original Relationship Dynamic

In the live example with the young woman and her roommate, this dynamic becomes concrete. She brought her roommate to a hot yoga class, expecting it to be an intense, sweat-inducing workout. But when she watched her roommate's face throughout the class, she became focused on one thing: whether her roommate was getting a "good workout," whether she was suffering enough to feel the class was worth it.

Crone asks her directly: What is the answer to your own question? (1:42). She had been asking herself all class, "Why am I so focused on her?" Her first response was to "focus on yourself." But Crone pushes deeper. What is the underlying why?

She admits: "I want to make sure she's good because then it makes me feel safe" (2:44). There it is. The trigger—the anxiety about her roommate's experience—was never really about the roommate. It was about her own sense of safety. She needed her roommate to be okay, to be getting what she wanted, in order for her to feel secure.

Crone names what is actually happening: subtle manipulation (3:05). She is not consciously trying to harm her roommate; she cares about her deeply. But she is unconsciously trying to control her roommate's experience for her own benefit. And this is not unique to her—he notes everyone engages in this same behavior with spouses, partners, children, friends. The value of naming it is that you can finally be honest about it, and from honesty, you can shift.

Where Does Your Trigger Come From? Tracing It Back

Crone guides her backward: If your roommate didn't get a good workout, why would you not feel safe? What is it about her that makes you responsible for her well-being?

She recognizes: "It's from somebody in my past—a parent. If I only feel safe to the degree to which that person's happy, or getting the results they want, because their needs are more important" (3:35). The pattern is clear. As a child, her sense of safety was directly tied to a parent's emotional state. She learned: I am safe when they are satisfied. I am unsafe when they are unhappy.

Crone asks: What was the quality of that parent? She describes: Big energy. Loud. They threw things (4:05). A parent who was overbearing, volatile, unpredictable. In the presence of that kind of noise and chaos, she felt unsafe as a young girl. Pretty little, she says—she was very young when this registered.

Now the trigger makes sense. Her roommate also has "big energy." The roommate's presence in her living space replicates the original dynamic: a powerful, dominant person whose satisfaction or dissatisfaction feels like it dictates her own safety. Her anxiety during the yoga class was the re-activation of that childhood fear.

Why Do You Attract the Same People?

Crone introduces a provocative idea: You are quote-unquote attracting the people who represent the same caregivers you are still reconciling with (4:15). This is not about mystical magnetism or cosmic lessons, but about the simple fact that your unconscious mind seeks out situations that match its template. You have an unresolved dynamic with a loud, powerful parent. You unconsciously choose a roommate with similar energy. Now you are living in close proximity to the trigger every day.

Why would you do this? Because you are actually working on it (4:30). You have attracted this person because some part of you is trying to resolve what you were not able to resolve in childhood. You are replicating the same environment you grew up in so that you can work on getting away from it, or—more accurately—so you can work on changing your relationship to it.

This is not punishment. It is an opportunity. The universe, or your own unconscious wisdom, has set up the conditions for you to heal the original wound.

The Real Separation: You From You, Not You From Her

When Crone points out that she is manipulating her roommate, she pushes back slightly: "I know your work. I know where this is going. Can't I just focus on myself?" (3:20). In other words, can't I just stop worrying about her and focus on my own yoga practice?

Crone's response is subtle and crucial: The separation is actually you with you (5:05). She thinks the problem is that she is too enmeshed with her roommate, and that she needs to psychologically separate from her roommate. But the real issue is that she has separated from herself. She has abandoned the part of her that is scared—the inner child who, in the presence of big, loud energy, feels unsafe and asks for protection.

Instead of listening to that frightened inner child and responding with compassion, she tries to manage the external situation. She tries to control her roommate's workout experience so that the external conditions will change and she will feel safe. But the betrayal is to that part of you that feels scared (5:15). She is saying to her inner child: Your fear doesn't matter. Be quiet. Focus on the yoga. And she is turning her attention outward to fix the roommate.

This is another iteration of the original betrayal. In childhood, she betrayed herself by ignoring her fear and doing whatever she thought would keep her caregivers happy. Now, as an adult, she is doing the same thing—betraying her own inner child in order to manage external circumstances.

The Practice: Making Space for the Scared Part

What, then, is the path to freedom? Crone explains: If you can make space for the part of you that came up with the idea that you're not safe—not fix it, not change it, not make it go away—if you can just make space for it (13:05), everything shifts.

This is a radical practice because it requires you to stop trying to manage the external world and to turn your attention inward. Instead of focusing on your roommate's workout, you notice the scared feeling in your body. You notice the voice that says, "Something's not okay. I'm not safe." You acknowledge that voice. You do not argue with it or try to convince yourself that you are actually safe. You simply make space for it to exist.

Crone offers a story: A man is walking down the street late at night. He sees a woman on all fours, sweeping the ground with her hands under a streetlight. He asks, "What are you looking for?" She says, "My keys." He asks, "Where did you drop them?" She says, "Over there, in the dark." He asks, "Then why are you looking here?" She says, "Because the light is better here" (8:20).

The story is about misdirected search. You are looking in the wrong place. You are looking at your roommate's face, trying to see if she is happy enough, when what you actually need to find is the conversation happening inside yourself—the voice saying, "I'm not safe," the question, "Where is my safety coming from?"

The answer cannot be found in controlling your roommate. It can only be found by turning toward the scared part of you and creating safety for that.

How Your Belief Shapes Your Actions

Crone emphasizes: Your belief about whether you are safe doesn't just affect your feelings—it dictates your actions (13:50). If you believe you are not safe, you will act from that belief. You will try to control situations, manage people, stay hypervigilant. If you believe you are safe, your actions naturally change. You relax. You trust. You stop manipulating.

But you cannot think your way to a new belief. You cannot argue yourself into feeling safe. The belief is held in your body, in your nervous system, encoded in your early experience. The only way to shift the belief is to repeatedly experience the opposite of what the belief says. When you are triggered—when your roommate's big energy activates your fear—and instead of trying to control her or escape the situation, you make space for the fear and do something different (14:05), you are beginning to rewire the neural pathways that hold the old belief.

What does "doing something different" mean? It might mean breathing. It might mean placing your hand on your heart and acknowledging the scared part. It might mean speaking a truth you have always been afraid to speak. It might mean allowing yourself to feel unsafe while also choosing not to abandon yourself. The specific action matters less than the fact that it breaks the pattern of self-betrayal.

The Quote That Holds the Practice

Toward the end of the dialogue, Crone mentions a quote, attributed to Rumi: "Even if there are a crowd of sorrows..." (8:20). The full quote, though not recited in full here, speaks to the practice of making space for difficult emotions rather than trying to eradicate them. The idea is that you do not need your sorrows, your fears, your triggers to go away in order to be free. You need only to change your relationship to them—to stop abandoning yourself in their presence.

This is freedom. Not the absence of fear. Not the absence of being triggered. But the end of self-betrayal. The end of trying to manage the external world so you do not have to feel your fear. The beginning of turning toward that fear with kindness and presence.

Where to Go From Here

If you find yourself repeatedly triggered by the same person or type of person, consider: What qualities does this person have? What early relationship do they remind you of? What are you trying to control about their behavior, and what would you need to feel safe if you stopped controlling it? What frightened or abandoned part of you is asking for your attention right now?

The practice is not complex, but it is not easy. It requires you to notice when you are triggered, to pause the impulse to fix the external situation, and to turn your attention inward. It requires you to make space for the scared part of you—to listen to it, to honor it, to stop betraying it in the service of safety through control. It requires you to understand that your nervous system learned a false equation in childhood, and that equation is now running in the background of your adult life. The work is to recognize that equation, to see where it is playing out, and to choose differently.

The gift in the trigger is the opportunity to do that work. And the freedom on the other side is not the absence of the trigger, but your freedom from it—your ability to be triggered and not abandon yourself, to be in the presence of the person who reminds you of your past, and to respond from your adult wisdom rather than your childhood fear.

[0:00] the things that trigger you in life are

[0:02] actually they're gifts right they say

[0:03] life will present you with people and

[0:05] circumstances to reveal where you're not

[0:06] free what is that pointing to where are

[0:09] you in some sort of invisible prison

[0:12] deep in the recesses of what I call your

[0:14] subconscious that is now being triggered

[0:16] because somebody said something or

[0:17] somebody did

[0:18] something so if we have somebody who's

[0:21] willing to play is there something here

[0:23] that someone has recently been triggered

[0:24] by preferably

[0:26] today I'll be uh transparent I did a a

[0:30] hot yoga class in Culver City with my

[0:32] roommate and she likes I like a more Zen

[0:35] work I like to work out hard but she

[0:37] likes a very like hard workout where I'm

[0:39] like I want Zen and hard workout and the

[0:41] whole time I know her very well I've

[0:43] known her for like a decade plus um and

[0:46] the whole time I all I could focus on

[0:48] was I feel like she wasn't getting a

[0:50] good workout the whole time cuz I'm a

[0:52] people pleaser I know all your work I

[0:54] know all the things you're about to say

[0:56] don't get too presumptuous now I might

[0:58] have got some new work since she last

[1:00] I'm ready I'm ready I've listened to a

[1:01] lot of your stuff so I'm ready for a new

[1:03] okay so your your roommate's not working

[1:05] out hard enough no she's working out

[1:07] hard and I'm thinking I brought her to a

[1:09] class cuz I said oh this she's such a

[1:11] good work this instructor is great like

[1:12] you're going to get sweat on I just see

[1:14] her face and I feel like she's not like

[1:16] flinching and not struggling and I'm

[1:17] like not that I want her to struggle I

[1:19] just was kind

[1:21] of I just was like yeah I want to get

[1:23] her ass kicked a little bit and like

[1:24] yeah that was a great workout um but I

[1:27] know your work and it all I kept doing

[1:28] was why am I so bothered by her yeah

[1:32] needing to get that experience that I

[1:34] want her to have instead of I kept

[1:36] trying the whole time just go focus on

[1:38] your workout focus on your workout so so

[1:42] what is the answer to your own question

[1:43] focus on you no well that wasn't the

[1:46] answer to the question though right what

[1:47] was the question why am I so so focused

[1:50] on her so what is the why for you um

[1:55] probably just she's a big energy and I

[1:57] want to make sure she's good cuz then it

[2:00] makes me feel safe ah did you hear that

[2:02] so like I know his stuff I know where

[2:05] that I said I know your work I know

[2:06] where this is going you're like [ __ ] why

[2:08] did I put my hand

[2:09] up yeah so it looks like you want her to

[2:12] get a good workout but the underlying

[2:14] intention is uh for me to feel s it's

[2:17] selfish it's me for me to feel safe so

[2:18] where's the evidence for you that you

[2:19] wouldn't feel safe if she didn't have a

[2:21] good

[2:22] workout

[2:24] um like she's did she's not she didn't

[2:27] get a good workout out of it would be

[2:28] but you said she's got big energy right

[2:30] so I'm starting to put the pieces myself

[2:32] pretty quickly here you're trying to

[2:35] very subtly not so subtly manipulate a

[2:37] situation for your own benefit not that

[2:40] any of you do that especially not with

[2:42] your spouses I'm very familiar with your

[2:43] language I'm like yeah right so just

[2:45] this is such a beautiful example right

[2:47] it's like it's an innocent yoga class

[2:49] but what you really see as a play is he

[2:51] a beautiful person who's willing to

[2:52] contribute to this group and hopefully

[2:54] it'll benefit from this but what she's

[2:56] really up to is she's trying to

[2:57] manipulate her roommate who she really

[2:59] cares about I do I do no I know you do I

[3:02] listen we're all [ __ ] don't worry

[3:04] about it but I don't I say everyone does

[3:06] the same [ __ ] it's just it's it helps if

[3:08] you can see it so you can be honest

[3:10] about it yeah so so let's go back so

[3:12] okay she's got big energy you're giving

[3:14] me enough information that's a bit of a

[3:16] to tell and you don't feel safe so why

[3:18] is it you don't feel safe uh it it's

[3:20] familiar it's from somebody in my past

[3:23] and right but what does she represent

[3:25] that's familiar from your past um just a

[3:27] parent that if I only feel safe to the

[3:30] degree to which that person's happy or

[3:32] not or um getting the results they want

[3:35] cuz their needs are more important

[3:38] that's that's how you saw from my

[3:40] experience yes so that person who was

[3:42] big was a care provider a parent you

[3:43] said okay great and so when when did you

[3:46] first remember experiencing that lack of

[3:49] safety approxim how old pretty little

[3:52] pretty little on probably yeah so they

[3:54] were like loud they threw things right

[3:57] so in the space of noise you feel UNS

[4:00] safe can is everyone tracking here cuz

[4:02] this is everyday example right perfect

[4:05] okay so now you you no surprise to me

[4:07] that you've attracted a roommate who has

[4:09] certain qualities that represent by the

[4:12] way for any of you not sure you are

[4:14] quote unquote attracting the people that

[4:15] are those care providers that you're

[4:17] still reconciling the things you're not

[4:19] okay with so your roommate big energy

[4:21] that tells me a lot represents the same

[4:23] kind of energy of your care provider and

[4:25] so of course you would set it up so that

[4:28] you have that person in a very close

[4:30] close proximity because what are you

[4:32] actually working on just replicating the

[4:35] same environment I grew up in so that

[4:37] you can work on

[4:38] what getting away from it or well that's

[4:41] what you're trying to do one of the ways

[4:43] you're trying to get away from it is go

[4:44] to a hot yoga class and make sure that

[4:46] your roommate gets a serious

[4:48] workout I'm surprised you haven't

[4:50] started drugging

[4:52] her well you were in my head the whole

[4:54] time going it's separate separate like

[4:56] it's just focus on you well the

[4:58] beautiful thing about it and listen

[4:59] you're being such a such a a good sport

[5:02] here the separation is actually you with

[5:05] you MH right it looks like you're trying

[5:07] to separate you from her but actually

[5:09] the real betrayal is to the part of you

[5:11] that feels scared and I want you to

[5:14] consider this is for all of you the

[5:15] first primordial wound as far as I'm

[5:17] concerned as a young kid is that you

[5:19] betray yourself the reason you betray

[5:21] yourself we all do is because we make a

[5:24] contract unspoken that is to the care

[5:26] providers if you keep me safe I will

[5:30] behave in the way that I think you want

[5:32] me to behave the emphasis on I think now

[5:35] do you really get that because that is

[5:37] so pivotal in the start of how you

[5:40] generated your own idea of yourself the

[5:42] good boy the bad boy the good girl the

[5:45] bad girl whatever you thought you had to

[5:46] be in order to make sure that you don't

[5:48] get excommunicated from the family

[5:50] because if that happens based on Primal

[5:51] DNA you get kicked out into the jungle

[5:54] and you don't make it right so here

[5:56] there a beautiful young girl she's

[5:57] scared ex parent makes a lot of noise

[6:01] and from that moment forth she felt that

[6:03] if there's a lot of noise around her

[6:05] she's not safe can you see those two get

[6:07] collapsed did anything ever happen to

[6:10] you that was potentially

[6:12] life-threatening in that

[6:14] situation I mean maybe when I was

[6:16] younger and couldn't digest that it

[6:19] wasn't safe but it probably I mean I

[6:20] would I was probably safe but in that

[6:22] moment I couldn't have digested I'm

[6:23] going to suggest you can get rid of the

[6:24] probably cuz my question is about

[6:26] lifethreatening right cuz there are

[6:28] certain people I mean I've helped people

[6:29] who literally are somebody's coming at

[6:31] them with a knife right like it's a

[6:33] serious situation what I hear is there

[6:34] was just a lot of noise you're a little

[6:36] girl and you're scared so now whenever

[6:38] you quote unquote hear the same a lot of

[6:40] noise or someone seems a little bit

[6:41] overbearing or is powerful or dominant

[6:44] or maybe even a little bit forceful you

[6:46] go straight into that energy mhm yeah

[6:48] it's hard to shake for sure right yeah

[6:49] you start actually to feel scared so now

[6:52] what you can see is the separation is

[6:54] from that part of you that is actually

[6:56] asking for you to create safety for her

[7:00] whether you call it your inner child or

[7:01] the inner dialogue or the conversation

[7:03] but where you're looking and I'll tell a

[7:05] little story which is cute where I heard

[7:07] this a long time ago but it's like a

[7:08] guy's walking down the sidewalk it's

[7:10] late at night it's dark and this woman

[7:11] is on all fours sort of swiping or um

[7:15] not swiping searching what's the word

[7:17] stroking stroking stroking no it's not

[7:19] the right word grazing sweeping is

[7:22] better sweeping we got the right first

[7:25] letter sweeping caressing the sidewalk

[7:29] and he so as he gets closer he's like

[7:31] okay like she's clearly like looking for

[7:33] something it seems said like you did you

[7:35] lose something it looks like you're

[7:36] looking for something she said yeah I I

[7:38] dropped my contact lens he's like okay

[7:41] well I'm happy to help if I can she' be

[7:42] that's great and he said do you remember

[7:45] at least roughly where you kind of had

[7:47] it when maybe you lost it and she's like

[7:49] yes I think cuz it was in my hand as I

[7:52] got out of the car and I think it fell

[7:53] out as I got out of my car he's like

[7:56] awesome that's a good start where's your

[7:58] car she said it's on the other side of

[8:00] the

[8:01] street and he's like okay so then why

[8:04] are you over here looking she said so

[8:05] much easier to see Under the Street

[8:08] Lamp right so so much easier if I can

[8:10] manipulate my roommate so she's [ __ ]

[8:13] exhausted after a hot yoga class so she

[8:15] doesn't have all this boisterous energy

[8:17] so that I can feel safe all the while

[8:19] what are you

[8:20] reinforcing the need to feel safe then

[8:23] I'm already sa well the need to feel

[8:25] safe is the adaptation but what are you

[8:26] actually reinforcing that I'm not safe

[8:29] correct right

[8:30] and what is it like to walk around in a

[8:32] world where you feel you're not safe

[8:34] it's tiring I know this as a truth but

[8:37] it is hard to shake it's very hard to

[8:39] break this it is because it's not

[8:41] something to shake who here and again I

[8:44] know this is a new crowd but I want you

[8:46] to consider this is family right like

[8:48] one of the things I pride myself on is

[8:50] really coming from a place of true

[8:52] unconditional love with no judgment

[8:53] there's no one here as a human being on

[8:55] planet Earth who doesn't have their own

[8:56] Phobos and their own imperfections and

[8:58] their fears so here who here can relate

[9:01] to feeling not safe chances are you know

[9:05] the majority of you women I apologize on

[9:08] behalf of every man that's ever lived

[9:10] because you know it's been centuries

[9:11] worth of abuse right so you have every

[9:13] right to feel not safe so it's a very

[9:17] human and beautiful ex part of the

[9:20] fabric of how we design ourselves right

[9:23] so in trying to get rid of it and even

[9:25] further under the street L trying to

[9:27] manipulate your roommate all you're

[9:28] doing is actually reinforcing that that

[9:31] is your

[9:32] reality so it's scary it's exhausting

[9:36] well are there other other ways that you

[9:37] tend to cope can you see that if you're

[9:39] in the world are not safe other ways

[9:41] that you maneuver around the world

[9:43] different guys you attract jobs you take

[9:45] times a day you leave the house don't

[9:46] leave the

[9:48] house

[9:50] um it's probably just with like certain

[9:52] personalities if it's a big big energy

[9:54] like I will act to Sur like even on the

[9:56] way home like I wanted to go get coconut

[9:58] water at the store but I was like she I

[10:00] don't want to make her I know she has to

[10:02] go back to work so I just want to take

[10:03] her back to work like I and in my head I

[10:05] was like no go get the coconut water

[10:06] like your needs are important this

[10:08] sounds so petty I promise I'm not listen

[10:10] listen you have no idea how powerful

[10:13] what you just said is and I promise you

[10:15] every single person in this space right

[10:17] now has their equivalent story yeah it

[10:19] might not be their roommate it might not

[10:21] be around noise but it's something to do

[10:22] with their husband their wife their kids

[10:23] their mom the dad the brother or sister

[10:25] right yeah you win sometimes and

[10:27] sometimes you don't so it's all well I

[10:29] like to think I most of the times cuz I

[10:30] don't do that but I think you

[10:34] are yeah it's another way that we

[10:36] protect oursel by saying you right

[10:38] because it's a way that you're betraying

[10:39] yourself and you just perfectly

[10:41] demonstrated what I was talking about

[10:43] this betrayal is you're willing to

[10:45] sacrifice yourself in this case

[10:47] something that we could argue is way

[10:48] more important which is self- hydration

[10:50] self-care Wellness for the the pending

[10:54] Doom of somebody getting upset yeah you

[10:56] know I had a friend once who said I'll

[10:58] do everything I can to avoid

[10:59] confrontation

[11:00] I said for that reason you're in a

[11:02] constant state of Confrontation right

[11:04] yeah you get that is that

[11:07] crazy so so listen you're being such a

[11:10] trooper and this is so I'm so grateful

[11:13] because it's through these everyday

[11:14] mundane going to get coconut water going

[11:16] to a yoga class that we start to see

[11:18] what it is like to be human and how we

[11:21] in ways that we're not even aware of

[11:23] live in a world of suffering the space

[11:25] the mind so you're living in a world in

[11:27] the space nothing but pure opportunity

[11:29] and I would assert absolute infinite

[11:32] possibility but the world you're

[11:34] actually living in one of them one of

[11:36] the 10 prisons is I'm not safe and for

[11:38] Justified reasons it's not even you're a

[11:40] bad person but it's hard to kick or you

[11:42] said or it's tough to get rid of so what

[11:44] might be another way to approach it as

[11:47] opposed to trying to get rid of it I

[11:49] just softening to it or just yeah I I

[11:52] guess you you don't have kids right I'm

[11:54] guessing do you have aspirations to be a

[11:55] mom

[11:57] uh I'm in the middle okay yeah I'm in

[12:01] the I don't know if that works but like

[12:04] half a kid

[12:05] or don't like you give it back three

[12:08] days a week you

[12:09] know that works you just have to get

[12:11] married and then

[12:12] divorc no I'm trying not to do that got

[12:15] a lot ahead of you um okay great so

[12:17] let's just say do you have a niece or

[12:19] you have friends who have a little girl

[12:21] maybe somewhere you know or you've seen

[12:23] movies uh with kids you know what kids

[12:26] are I do I am um a kids still I'm 30 so

[12:29] I'm going to guess if you're someone

[12:30] who's sufficiently willing to give up

[12:32] her own need for something like peace uh

[12:35] hydration from coconut water that you're

[12:37] a very caring Sweet Soul so my guess is

[12:40] if you had a friend a dear friend of you

[12:42] and you got to know her daughter who was

[12:44] very sweet and you Babys sat CU you

[12:45] wanted to help out cuz you're a good

[12:47] human and that little girl was scared

[12:49] cuz she heard a noise outside so she

[12:51] felt not safe the emotion being

[12:53] associated with fear or being scared

[12:56] what might be your approach to her if

[12:58] you're taking care of her

[13:00] uh comforting and saying it's okay yeah

[13:04] so you wouldn't NE want to try and get

[13:05] rid of her no what were you trying to do

[13:08] with your yeah it's tough to kick this

[13:11] kid who's scared especially as this my

[13:13] friend's kid that doesn't look good yeah

[13:16] do you see like it all seems so well

[13:18] intended right that we think oh well

[13:20] this hurts and I don't like this feeling

[13:21] so I'm trying to get rid of it and I

[13:23] want you to consider all of you that the

[13:24] actual beauty of stepping into what I

[13:27] call Freedom is that we make space for

[13:28] all of it right right there's you know

[13:31] there's a beautiful

[13:32] actually I think I just took a

[13:34] screenshot today how about that for

[13:36] timing wow golly I'd manifest so

[13:40] beautifully um there's a quote by roomie

[13:43] that actually speaks to this I promise

[13:45] you this was not predetermined or

[13:47] prepared it's called the guest house I

[13:49] literally screenshotted this today this

[13:52] being human is a guest house every

[13:55] morning a new arrival a joy a depression

[13:58] a meanness some momentary awareness

[14:01] comes as an unexpected

[14:04] visitor welcome and entertain them all

[14:07] even if there are a crowd of Sorrows who

[14:09] violently sweep your home empty of its

[14:13] furniture still treat each guest

[14:16] honorably he may be clearing you out for

[14:19] some new Delight the dark thought the

[14:22] shame the malice meet them at the door

[14:24] laughing and invite them in be grateful

[14:27] for whatever comes because each has

[14:29] being sent as a guide from Beyond yep

[14:33] Isn't that cool yeah so what might be a

[14:37] new way that you could relate to your

[14:40] guest house the space that is your mind

[14:42] and you have a current resident who just

[14:44] happens to be there for like 90% of your

[14:46] life apparently yeah who is feeling

[14:48] scared yeah what might be a different

[14:50] approach to that particular story that

[14:55] dialogue that it's not a truth and that

[14:58] I am safe and and then it's about so so

[15:01] let's let's slow down a little bit

[15:03] there's nothing that's not inaccurate

[15:05] but what might be using the example of

[15:06] your babysitting your friend's beautiful

[15:08] cute little daughter who's scared what

[15:10] might be the approach to that part of

[15:12] you that had a care provider who is very

[15:14] loud that made you scared what might now

[15:16] be this new guest that you have that

[15:18] you're aware of in this beautiful guest

[15:20] house called your

[15:21] mind

[15:23] um that it's okay and the guest is just

[15:27] a little girl trying to feel safe and

[15:30] get her needs fulfilled um and yeah it's

[15:32] okay to have the feelings of being

[15:34] scared yeah say that a little louder for

[15:37] everybody it's okay to feel scared we're

[15:40] all scared yeah and and and listen this

[15:43] is so beautiful that you happen to be

[15:44] the one with the mic isn't

[15:47] it does everyone get that Stu does

[15:50] everyone just get what's happening here

[15:52] like she we no one would begrudge her if

[15:55] she was the last one if everyone had to

[15:56] say something and share an intimate sort

[15:58] of vulnerability

[16:00] with that particular way that she

[16:01] relates to life everyone would have some

[16:04] compassion go okay yeah you go last get

[16:06] some confidence but here she is I think

[16:09] it's just so beautiful and I really

[16:10] acknowledge you for the courage because

[16:12] I hope you know that through your

[16:14] example everyone can vicariously see

[16:16] their own version and many of people are

[16:17] going to have the same one you know even

[16:19] at the beginning I said what is the Mind

[16:21] who here just being vulnerable who here

[16:23] when I said who who wants to tell me

[16:25] what the mind is you just felt like you

[16:27] didn't want to put your hand up cuz

[16:28] you're a bit nervous or you're well

[16:30] that's not going to work cuz now you're

[16:31] going to be nervous and not put your

[16:32] hand up no who who can just be honest

[16:35] and say you kind of didn't want to put

[16:36] your hand up cuz you're in a

[16:38] group right I mean it's it's human it's

[16:41] okay you know I can remember the first

[16:43] time I sat well stood in front of a

[16:45] group of I don't know 60 70 baseball

[16:48] players who were commanding over $200

[16:50] million and I'm a bloke from England

[16:52] who's never played baseball and I'm

[16:53] supposed to be charged with their mental

[16:55] Wellness I'm like what the [ __ ] am I

[16:57] going to tell these guys

[16:59] so you know hello I play

[17:02] cricket very similar throw a ball jolly

[17:04] good shot um yeah so it's okay you know

[17:08] so what happens is if you can make space

[17:10] for that part of you not only do you let

[17:12] go of the exhausting need to try and

[17:14] control your environment your roommate

[17:15] the hydration da da da you go oh hello

[17:19] I'm human and as part of Being Human

[17:22] there is a part of me that's

[17:23] intrinsically natural to the psyche of

[17:26] anyone who's maybe concerned for their

[17:28] survival yeah I always hear you say it's

[17:31] okay that's just the the slogan I've

[17:32] taken it's okay it's totally okay yeah

[17:35] you know it's it's not only okay it's

[17:38] beautiful and I would assert here's the

[17:40] really powerful thing for you to

[17:41] recognize are you in a in an intimate

[17:43] relationship now a romantic relationship

[17:45] no and again this is a bold statement

[17:47] but I would assert she doesn't have

[17:49] space for

[17:50] one you really get what I said yeah

[17:53] because if she can't even communicate

[17:55] with her roommate who first of all is

[17:56] another woman and again she may be

[17:58] boisterous lot of energy women listen

[18:00] really well and generally and naturally

[18:03] compassionate then if she's living in a

[18:05] world where she's not safe and

[18:06] particularly as the archetype who

[18:07] represented the noise and the

[18:08] boisterousness that made her feel scared

[18:10] was the masculine then there's already

[18:12] like some sort of dialogue about her

[18:15] relative to a man particularly if he's a

[18:17] powerful man can you see that and yet

[18:20] She's beautiful kind sweet contributing

[18:22] to this group in a way that she didn't

[18:24] know and you didn't know and there's

[18:26] just an opportunity that's being missed

[18:28] because she's living in this tight space

[18:29] called I'm not safe you know do you see

[18:31] that and I want you to consider in such

[18:33] a beautiful way that you shared with us

[18:35] tonight that your belief that you're not

[18:38] safe and it's beyond a belief it's

[18:39] deeper it's just the you that you are

[18:41] for yourself the way that it informs

[18:42] your thoughts feelings and actions that

[18:44] we've we've heard is suffocating the

[18:46] life you

[18:47] are where are you from I was born in

[18:50] palis veres California great can I take

[18:52] you through a very quick exercise yes

[18:54] great so if I were to cut you open

[18:56] literally am I going to find a physical

[18:58] manufact in label like choice of

[19:01] materials whatever you want wood metal

[19:03] that says on it born in California she's

[19:06] not safe no no I'm not right I find a

[19:09] bunch of DNA and D D D and blood and

[19:11] bones right great so where does the I'm

[19:13] not safe exist then the mind the mind in

[19:17] the mind so if it's in your mind what is

[19:19] its format what is I'm not safe made up

[19:23] of um feelings thoughts they're the

[19:26] byproducts thoughts yeah and what are

[19:28] thoughts if we would be more general

[19:29] what are

[19:31] thoughts um words words yeah so I want

[19:36] you to consider they I'm not safe that

[19:38] actually actually dictates the actions

[19:40] you take and the things that betray the

[19:42] choices and the things that you aspire

[19:44] to actually create in your life is based

[19:46] in words and to get it even more down to

[19:50] the semantics and to the actual

[19:52] structure it's sound yeah you know this

[19:56] is La you're all spiritual right we're

[19:58] vibratory being you want to understand

[20:00] the universe think in terms of frequency

[20:01] energy and vibration Tesla right so get

[20:04] this you live with a person who I'm sure

[20:07] Ador you in her own way and that you

[20:10] adore but you are being constrained by

[20:13] sound mhm yeah you get that like that's

[20:18] Bonkers when I realized the things I was

[20:20] doing and I was doing some pretty stupid

[20:22] [ __ ] you know with all the compassion to

[20:24] my scared little boy my parents die like

[20:26] I was so scared of loss and I was had to

[20:27] be the perfect boyfriend I'm exed all

[20:29] the things right was because of sound I

[20:33] know and it's suffocating the life that

[20:36] is available to you on the other side of

[20:38] that and it's not your fault that's

[20:40] where the compassion comes in so let me

[20:41] ask you another question it's not a

[20:43] manufacturing label so if it's in your

[20:44] mind in the form of sound

[20:47] words is it a truth and you can only

[20:49] answer yes or no and you kind of know

[20:51] this but now I want you to feel it is it

[20:53] an absolute truth that who you are is

[20:55] not safe no it's not is it so now this

[20:59] is all new and if you're playing along

[21:01] and really staying with me what would

[21:03] become available for you if you lived in

[21:06] the world where you're not and listen

[21:08] very carefully it's a double negative

[21:09] you're not not safe I'm not saying you

[21:11] are safe that has all sorts of different

[21:13] connotations yeah but you're definitely

[21:16] not not safe the limitation the world

[21:18] you lived in just crumbled yeah it's

[21:20] opportunity well how would you feel in a

[21:23] world where you can't feel not safe

[21:25] liberated liberated yeah is that better

[21:28] than how you arrive oh

[21:31] yeah amazing who who could follow along

[21:34] with that right and I said if you could

[21:36] leave here with a bit more freedom

[21:37] that's exactly what we just did and she

[21:39] played along and this was quite quick

[21:41] but I want you to really consider that

[21:42] the world you live in is entirely your

[21:44] own it's your own creation it's not a

[21:45] truth you may have evidence for it

[21:47] particularly in this case from your

[21:48] childhood but it's got nothing to do

[21:50] with you being in a car with a friend

[21:51] going to maybe get some coconut water or

[21:53] being in yoga Club yeah and I want you

[21:55] to also consider it would not only

[21:57] liberate but it would give you so much

[21:59] more energy so much more creativity and

[22:01] it would open up the manifestation of

[22:04] things that you couldn't possibly access

[22:06] when you're living in this confined

[22:07] world yeah it's hard to break that to me

[22:09] is pretty cool it's amazing if you're

[22:11] into that for sure thank you so much

[22:13] you're

[22:17] welcome there's a perfect example of how

[22:19] you know as human beings we in ways that

[22:21] we aren't aware of and for which reason

[22:23] we can have so much compassion for

[22:24] oursel we walk around thinking that

[22:26] we're in the world but I want you to

[22:28] consider that you're not in the world

[22:29] you're in your

[22:30] world and it's your world you're up

[22:33] against you know the whole cliche is the

[22:34] only person that's in you know

[22:36] sabotaging your life is yourself you

[22:37] know the the you that you are for

[22:39] yourself is the obstacle to the very

[22:40] things that you

[22:42] want so who here has an obstacle that

[22:45] they want to get Beyond

[22:47] yes yes
