How She Reversed Hashimoto's After20 Years on Medication

When Maria was told she had Hashimoto's disease nearly two decades ago, the verdict felt final. A genetic condition, she was told—one that ran through her family. Her mother had it. Relatives had it. The prescription was straightforward: take medication every day, likely for the rest of her life. She complied. Years passed. Then, around fifteen years into treatment, she asked her doctor a simple question: what would it take to stop taking the pill? His answer was blunt: "You have to die."

That conversation stayed with her. She began reading about alternatives—diet modifications, lifestyle shifts—but dismissed them as impractical. Life continued. Then 2020 arrived, bringing with it a seismic personal rupture: the dissolution of her marriage. In the wreckage of that transition, something unexpected happened. A therapist recommended Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, a book about meditation and mental transformation. Maria read it while navigating her separation, doing the meditations described in its pages. She felt something shift—years of resentment and anger seemed to literally drain from her body as she sat in practice. If meditation could help her process the emotional devastation of divorce, she wondered, what else might be possible?

The Parallel Path of Healing and Life Transformation

By early 2022, a friend recommended attending a live event. Maria and her friend traveled to Cancun in January or February of that year, where she encountered testimonials of people who had healed from chronic conditions. For the first time in nearly two decades, she saw a glimmer of hope that her thyroid diagnosis might not be permanent. She returned home with a decision: she would work toward getting off her medication while simultaneously navigating the deeper changes her life was demanding.

The strategy was methodical. She sat down with her doctor and asked what specific blood test markers would need to shift for a dose reduction to be warranted. The doctor gave her a target. Maria began meditating with that intention as her north star, holding it clearly in her mind each time she sat in practice. Weeks later, she got her blood work done. The results came back at the exact level they'd discussed. She reminded her doctor of their agreement. The physician was hesitant—"We have to wait," she said—but Maria held firm. "You promised," Maria replied. The doctor relented and lowered the dose, scheduling another test for eight weeks out.

That test came back fine. Then the next one. The dose kept dropping, incrementally, until it reached its minimum. Maria felt stable. She broke her pills in half. Another test came back normal. She decided to stop entirely. No medical protocol mandated it—it was her choice alone. She waited a few months, then got tested again. Still fine. She felt no symptoms.

When Life Throws Another Challenge

In time, Maria moved and found a new doctor—one who supported what she was doing rather than resisting it. "Let's keep an eye on it," the physician said, and they continued periodic monitoring. Then came another major test: her mother passed away. The stress was immense. When Maria got her blood work done, her thyroid levels were either fine or borderline; the doctor attributed any fluctuation to the grief and stress she was processing. Maria kept meditating. She kept showing up to her practice.

Two years after she stopped taking medication, in January 2026, Maria received her test results. They were normal. Her doctor gave her the clearance she'd been working toward: "You are done." Twenty years after a diagnosis that felt irreversible, her thyroid was functioning on its own.

The Life She Actually Wanted to Create

But the story of Maria's transformation extends far beyond thyroid numbers. While she was meditating with the intention of healing her body, she was also envisioning a different life altogether. She visualized the loving relationship she craved. She imagined building a large family—something she had always wanted. She continued to hold these visions even as the process demanded sacrifice. Friendships fell away. People she'd known had to be left behind. New connections formed to replace them. She kept returning to a teaching she'd absorbed from her meditation practice: "The unknown has never disappointed me."

By the time her thyroid levels normalized in 2026, she had already married the man she had envisioned during those years of practice. He brought two adult children into the union. She brought two of her own. Together they formed the blended family she had always dreamed of—four adult children, a household bound not by obligation but by the intentional choice to build something together.

The arc of Maria's journey reveals something that doesn't fit neatly into the typical medical narrative. Her thyroid reversal wasn't incidental to her life transformation—it was woven into it. As she released old emotional patterns through meditation, as she began to envision and claim a future that felt authentic to her deepest desires, her body began to respond. The meditation practice, the intention-setting, the willingness to cross the river of change—these weren't supplementary to her healing. They were the healing.

Where to go from here

For those curious about meditation practice and its relationship to health, exploring guided meditations and attending a retreat designed to deepen contemplative work can offer direct experience rather than secondhand theory. Maria's willingness to work consistently—reading her chosen book twice, meditating daily, collaborating with supportive medical practitioners—suggests that transformation requires both inner commitment and practical partnership with healthcare providers who respect the process. The most profound shift may come not from a single intervention but from the courage to envision, hold, and step into a life that feels true to who you actually are.

[0:00] I asked my doctor at the time, what can

[0:02] I do to stop taking the medication? And

[0:05] he said, well, you have to die. And I

[0:08] was like, oh my god.

[0:11] I got diagnosed with Hashimoto uh back,

[0:15] I don't know, like 20 years ago.

[0:18] Um

[0:19] and I was told, you know, your mom has

[0:22] it, everybody in your family has it, you

[0:24] know, that's pretty much it, genetic,

[0:26] nothing to do about it. And so I started

[0:28] treatment and taking the pill every day,

[0:32] you know, forever.

[0:33] And then, I don't know, maybe 15 years

[0:36] into it, I was like,

[0:39] you know, I

[0:41] I would like to stop taking this pill.

[0:43] And then, um I asked my doctor at the

[0:46] time, what can I do

[0:48] to stop taking the pill, the the

[0:50] medication? And he said, well, you have

[0:53] to die. And I was like, oh my god.

[0:57] I, you know, I started reading and there

[0:59] was all this treatment with diet and

[1:02] what have you, and I'm like, oh no, I'm

[1:03] not going to I'm not going to do that.

[1:05] Fast forward a few years, 2020 comes,

[1:09] I'm going through a life transition

[1:12] um with my marriage. And so it's kind of

[1:15] a parallel,

[1:16] you know, uh path of life transformation

[1:20] and health transformation. And so my um

[1:24] my therapist recommended Breaking the

[1:26] Habit of Being Yourself.

[1:30] So I started reading that

[1:32] as I was going through my marriage

[1:35] basically break up, and I did the

[1:38] meditations of the book.

[1:39] And that really helped me with

[1:43] um

[1:44] you know, the resentment and the anger

[1:45] and frustration I had. And um it was

[1:49] just like I literally saw it leave my

[1:52] body.

[1:53] And so I was like, okay, I can

[1:56] manifest maybe having a um

[2:00] loving divorce, a separation. And so I

[2:03] started working on that. It wasn't easy

[2:06] at the beginning. I actually read the

[2:07] book twice

[2:10] and kept doing the work.

[2:12] And then at the same time, you know, I

[2:15] talked to another friend, recommended

[2:16] the book and she's like, we have to go

[2:18] to a Dr. Joe's event.

[2:22] And so we ended up going to Cancun,

[2:24] January, February 2022 and that's when

[2:27] when I saw the

[2:29] testimonials that I knew there was hope

[2:32] for what I wanted to do with my thyroid.

[2:34] Like I wanted to stop taking the

[2:36] medication. So I went back

[2:39] and again, this like the parallel path

[2:41] of health and life. So at the same time

[2:44] I'm doing all the changes in my life,

[2:47] you know, separating,

[2:49] getting a divorce and manifesting the

[2:52] love of my life who is my current

[2:54] husband, but we'll get to that in a

[2:56] minute. And so I talked to my doctor and

[2:58] I said, what do I have to get

[3:00] blood test wise

[3:02] for you to reduce the dose. So she told

[3:05] me X value.

[3:07] So I started meditating with that

[3:08] intention as I was going through the

[3:10] other changes

[3:11] and soon enough,

[3:13] you know, I got my blood test done again

[3:16] and I I hit that level. And so I said,

[3:18] well, you said if I hit that level,

[3:20] you're going to reduce the dose. She was

[3:22] hesitant. She's like, well, no, but we

[3:23] have to wait. I was like, no, no, you

[3:25] promised so you have to. So she did and

[3:27] she said, well, you have to take another

[3:29] test in like eight weeks. I did, it was

[3:32] fine.

[3:35] She kept lowering the dose until it got

[3:38] to the lowest possible and I was fine

[3:42] and after a while I decided to start

[3:44] breaking the the pill in half and so and

[3:49] see how it went. And so it was fine.

[3:52] And I got another blood test and it was

[3:53] fine. And then I was like, "Okay, I'm

[3:55] just going to stop." And that was only

[3:57] literally my decision. Um and after a

[4:00] few months, I decided to get another

[4:02] test and it was okay. I felt fine. I had

[4:05] no symptoms or anything. And then I I

[4:08] moved and I got an an amazing doctor

[4:11] that believed in what I was doing. And

[4:14] she she's like, "Okay, let's let's keep

[4:17] keep an eye on it. We take a few tests."

[4:19] I had to go through a another major life

[4:22] change which my mom passed. And so that

[4:24] was, you know, a lot. Um and my my

[4:28] levels were

[4:29] fine or it borderline. She's like, "It's

[4:31] okay, the stress." So long story short,

[4:34] this January 2026, I got my test. It was

[4:37] normal. She's like, "You are done."

[4:41] It's been 2 years since I stopped taking

[4:43] the medication. And uh it's been so

[4:46] liberating.

[4:48] And at the same time, I have been able

[4:50] to have the life I always dreamed of. I

[4:53] married again the love of my life. I

[4:55] always wanted to have a big family. I

[4:57] have two kids of my own. He has two

[4:59] kids. And so now we're this big blended

[5:02] fam- Well, they're all adults now, but

[5:03] we still we call them kids.

[5:05] Um we have this beautiful blended family

[5:08] with four adult

[5:10] um

[5:11] kids if you you can say that.

[5:13] I kept hearing Dr. Joe's words, "The

[5:17] unknown has never disappointed me."

[5:20] And so I really leaned into that because

[5:23] in the process

[5:25] uh of when I decided that I wanted to

[5:27] create the life that I that I wanted to

[5:29] live and be happy, um it didn't come,

[5:33] you know, at no cost. Uh you know, I had

[5:36] to leave people behind, lose

[5:38] friendships, gain new ones.

[5:41] Um so I I just kept thinking about the

[5:43] unknown has never disappointed me and

[5:45] crossing the river of change and all

[5:47] those things. And yeah, so I'm here

[5:50] living the best life, and I can only

[5:52] wait to see what's what's coming next.

[5:55] So,

[5:56] thank you.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Maria's case shows that meditation combined with consistent practice, medical collaboration, and clear intention may support thyroid healing for some people. Her thyroid levels normalized after two years off medication, though her success involved working closely with her doctor throughout the process rather than abandoning medical oversight.
Maria's timeline was gradual: she worked with her doctor to establish target blood markers, then slowly tapered her dose over several months before stopping entirely. Her doctor then monitored her levels consistently over two years before clearing her to discontinue treatment altogether, making this a multi-year process, not a quick fix.
While Hashimoto's does run in families and is considered an autoimmune condition, Maria's case demonstrates that the conventional understanding of it as lifelong may not always apply. Her recovery suggests that individual physiology and potentially emotional or psychological factors may play a larger role than purely genetic determinism.
Maria began with meditations from the book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself while processing emotional trauma from her divorce. She then attended a live retreat event that deepened her practice and exposed her to testimonies of healing. She meditated with specific intention around her thyroid markers and the life she wanted to create.
Maria did not mention diet modifications or supplements as part of her healing protocol. She focused on meditation, intention-setting, and emotional release through her practice, working collaboratively with doctors who monitored her progress and adjusted her medication based on blood test results.
Very important. Initially, her doctor told her she'd have to 'die' to stop medication. Later, she found a doctor who was willing to work with her on tapering and monitoring her levels. This collaborative relationship allowed her to test her intention-based approach safely while maintaining medical oversight.
