Childhood Trauma Patterns in Marriage: How Inherited Prisons Destroy Relationships

In this conversation, Peter Crone works with a woman whose marriage is fractured by conflict rooted in inherited patterns. Her husband and daughter both operate from childhood wounds—he from a need to be the fixer (a failure if he can't solve everything), she from growing up in a home where her father was unapproachable and violent. The breakthrough comes when she recognizes that her emotional safety depends on others managing their behavior, and that the "language" (emotional reactivity, withdrawal, contempt) she learned as a child is now the operating system of her marriage and her parenting.

What does it mean to live in an "invisible prison"?

Peter Crone uses the metaphor of an invisible prison to describe the unconscious repetition of childhood trauma patterns in adult life. A prison is "invisible" because the person living in it has no awareness that it exists—they only experience its byproducts: anxiety, reactivity, feeling unsafe, difficulty being heard, or constant conflict. The woman in this conversation describes her marriage as filled with explosions (her husband's Pitta rage) and withdrawal (her own dampening of her truth), but she doesn't initially recognize that both she and her husband are trapped in behavioral patterns formed decades earlier in their respective families of origin.

Crone's key insight: "You're living in a prison unknown to yourself. You have the byproducts of it and the impact of it. You just don't know the cause of it." She came home recently and felt triggered by the sound of her husband's car door—a visceral, automatic reaction that signals she's living in fear. That fear was learned as a child when her father worked late and came home irritable. A loud car door meant danger. Now, in her marriage, she operates from a baseline of not being safe, and every interaction with her husband gets filtered through that invisible threat.

How do childhood family patterns get transmitted into marriage?

The woman's father would come home and not want disturbance—he'd retreat to the TV. Her mother would sometimes break dishes. The woman learned that if she made noise or "ruckus," she would face spanking and disconnection from her father. So she became hypervigilant, careful, and emotionally self-contained. She learned the "language" of shutting down, of not being safe to speak her truth.

In her marriage, her husband exhibits a different inherited pattern: he was raised (likely in an Indian culture context, as Crone notes) where there was heavy judgment and pressure on him as a boy to be the one who fixes everything, who makes everything right. When he fails to do that, he feels like a complete failure. So when his daughter comes home upset and won't talk to him, and his wife tries to explain what happened, he hears: You can't do anything right. You're failing as a father. He doesn't hear her actual words; he hears the verdict of his entire childhood.

Crone explains: "He's listening through the lens of 'he can never do anything right.' He takes so much guilt about the fact that his daughter...is the least energetically available to him right now. So then you live in a world which is very clear to me: if he lives in the world where he can't do anything right, what's your wound? I'm not listening. I'm not heard."

The woman's response validates this: "If you're not heard, how do you feel? Inadequate." The result is a locked pattern where both partners are trapped—he in shame and the need to control outcomes, she in the belief that no one will really listen or keep her safe. They married each other for good reason, but they brought their prisons with them.

What is the "language that uses us"?

Crone offers one of his core teaching distinctions: "There's a language we use and there's a language that uses us." Most people understand the language they consciously use—words they speak. But the insidious language is the one that uses them: the tone, the silence, the explosive anger, the withdrawal, the criticism. This is the language they learned as a conditioned form of survival in their family.

In this woman's case, the language using her is one of fear and disconnection. She learned it from a father she couldn't safely approach. She speaks this language now through her need to pre-manage her husband's mood and her daughter's distress. She cannot be present with discomfort in others because discomfort—especially from the man in her house—means danger.

Her daughter, too, is beginning to learn this language. When the daughter comes home upset and won't talk, she's learning to protect herself by closing off, mirroring the woman's own defense. Crone points this out: "Your daughter's slamming the door, doesn't want to talk to you—doesn't that sound similar to your dad?" The woman is now the recipient of the very pattern she learned as a survival mechanism. The legacy perpetuates "through no fault of your own," as Crone says, but it perpetuates nonetheless.

Why does feeling unsafe undermine the ability to be heard?

The deepest wound in the woman's story is not inadequacy but fear. As a child, she learned that going close to her father—trying to get a hug, seeking connection—carried consequences. So she learned to contract, to make herself small. This taught her body something essential: it is not safe to need.

In her marriage, this manifests as a binding contradiction. She needs to be heard, but she cannot risk the vulnerability of truly speaking her need because, in her nervous system, speaking needs = danger. So she stays in a controlled state, managing her husband's mood, managing her daughter's responses, managing the emotional temperature of the household. The irony is that this very strategy makes it impossible for her to actually be heard, because she's not speaking from truth—she's speaking from control.

Crone identifies the two primal energies that drive human behavior: hurt and scared (or both). This woman carries both. She's hurt because she wasn't loved for who she was as a child; she was only safe if she complied, if she didn't make noise. She's scared because her nervous system still believes that emotional or vocal presence from her triggers danger in the men around her.

Her husband, by contrast, carries a different constellation: inadequacy and shame. He was taught that his job is to fix, to be the solution. When he can't, he feels worthless. His explosions are his nervous system's attempt to regain control when he feels that control slipping (which is most of the time, because he's bound to fail—no one can fix their way out of family chaos).

What shifts when the pattern becomes visible?

The turning point in the conversation comes when the woman recognizes, with Crone's guidance, that the conflict in her marriage is not primarily about her husband's anger or her daughter's rebellion. It's about two people operating from inherited trauma scripts, each activating the other's wound.

When she sees that her hypervigilance to her husband's car door is an echo of her fear of her father's return, something breaks open. She's no longer thinking, "My husband is an angry person." She's thinking, "My husband is a boy who was taught he's a failure, and I'm a girl who learned she's not safe, and we're both just trying to survive using the only tools we were given."

This shift is not about excusing behavior—neither the husband's explosions nor her own dampening are acceptable or healthy. But it is about understanding them as symptoms rather than character flaws. Once you see the symptom, you can address the underlying condition. As Crone says: "You're literally becoming a different person for which reason you can now heal. Because you're living in a prison unknown to yourself."

The woman reports that after this conversation, something changed. She felt the pain in her neck—the physical manifestation of her fear—begin to release. She interacted with her daughter differently, with more presence and less management. She even told her husband about the conversation, and he responded with affection rather than defensiveness. The system began to shift because one person in the system became aware of her own pattern and made a different choice.

What happens 30 days later?

In the follow-up segment, the woman returns with a report of concrete changes. She describes a new way of relating to her daughter: instead of trying to fix or manage the child's mood, she's learning to simply be present with her, to hold space. She's also stopped pre-managing her husband—she's experimenting with telling him the truth of what she's experiencing without trying to soften the blow or predict his reaction. In her words: "I started being me again."

The changes are not dramatic or Hollywood. Her family still has conflict. Her daughter still has bad days. Her husband still has stress. But the interpretation of these events has shifted. She no longer reads her daughter's withdrawal as a personal rejection or a sign that she's failing as a mother. She no longer reads her husband's stress as a sign that she needs to manage or control the situation. Instead, she's beginning to inhabit her own nervous system, which is gradually moving from a baseline of fear to a baseline of relative safety. That shift, Crone suggests, is the foundation for all other change in a system.

Where to Go From Here

If you recognize your own inherited patterns in this conversation—whether you carry fear-based protection like the woman or shame-based control like her husband—the first step is awareness. Crone's method is to identify the "prison" you're living in by examining not what you consciously believe about yourself, but how you behave under stress. Do you withdraw, explode, people-please, shut down, criticize? These are clues to the language that's using you.

The second step is to trace that behavior back to its origin without judgment. Where did you learn it? What was the threat it protected you from? What did that threat teach your young nervous system about safety, lovability, and your role in relationships? Once you can name that prison, you're no longer entirely trapped in it. You begin to have a choice about which behaviors to repeat and which to interrupt.

The third step is to practice being different in small ways, while also extending compassion to yourself and your partner for the patterns you're both stuck in. This is not a cognitive process. It's a nervous system recalibration, which takes time, presence, and often the support of someone trained in trauma-informed work. But as this woman's story shows, change is possible—and it begins the moment you see that what you thought was "just how things are" is actually a pattern you inherited, which means you have agency over it.

[0:00] so as I sat here come on I started to

[0:04] get this intense pain in my neck okay

[0:07] and I'm not really sure why I hope it

[0:10] wasn't associated with me no okay so

[0:13] let's just we'll put that on the back

[0:14] burner for now but what brought you here

[0:17] work well thank you my husband is we

[0:21] have a difficult relationship okay you

[0:24] Happ to expand on what's not easy the

[0:27] exclusive Behavior both sides

[0:31] yeah we're both pittas okay p means fire

[0:34] type for those of you not familiar with

[0:36] he just kind of blows up over like the

[0:39] smallest things and maybe they're not

[0:41] small to him but to me they just seem so

[0:44] mind them when was the last time he blew

[0:46] up a week ago okay and it was about I

[0:50] came home after picking up my daughter

[0:52] from school she was in a really bad

[0:54] moood not explaining what was going on

[0:56] to me she we're very close yeah um so

[0:59] she's usually very open

[1:01] um she was crying prly so I thought

[1:03] something happened at school and I asked

[1:05] her what's going on what happened at

[1:07] school yeah and she just said leave me

[1:08] alone I don't want to talk to you okay

[1:10] and so you know she was using some

[1:13] profanity and it was like well

[1:15] something's really going on yeah so we

[1:17] get inside she goes to her room she

[1:19] slaps her bedroom door and I'm like just

[1:21] trying to breathe I sit down my H's on

[1:24] the couch he's on his

[1:27] phone and I can see he's on Instagram so

[1:30] I thought you know he's not doing

[1:33] anything important yeah as he's on his

[1:35] phone he says what's going on and I

[1:39] said well she's in a really bad mood so

[1:42] don't don't even attempt to talk to her

[1:45] you know and explained everything that

[1:47] she was saying and she dropped some me

[1:49] bombs and he turned and looked at me and

[1:52] he said just stop

[1:56] talking you're triggering me

[2:00] and so then after he said that I got up

[2:02] I went into the kitchen and I was doing

[2:04] my thing and he comes in and he says are

[2:07] you okay what's the problem I said I'm

[2:09] not okay you dismissed me I was trying

[2:12] to have a conversation with you and kind

[2:14] of just have something to listen to me

[2:18] yeah and then he just lost

[2:22] it on the floor that he went into the

[2:25] living room and decided to take the

[2:28] couch so badly

[2:32] okay must be a pretty shitty

[2:42] C sh

[2:47] Ikea Vint you

[2:55] old yeah okay I got it so we're going to

[2:58] cut to the drinks right I'm playing with

[3:00] you

[3:00] with you right and you're a smart woman

[3:02] but I can also see the help a lot so

[3:06] where did you learn to be in an

[3:07] environment like that yeah give us a

[3:11] snapshot what was it like my dad worked

[3:13] a lot come home he didn't want

[3:19] any watchv from what happened if

[3:23] someone there would be an argument that

[3:27] my mother would break

[3:28] dishes to be

[3:30] so let me ask you a question if I was a

[3:32] neighbor with very thin walls in the

[3:34] house next to you where you grow up and

[3:37] then I was the same neighbor in the

[3:38] house that you're currently in and I

[3:41] didn't know what was going on in there

[3:42] would it probably sound similar yeah

[3:45] wouldn't it and daughters slamming doors

[3:47] don't want to talk to me doesn't sound

[3:50] too dissimilar to your dad right one of

[3:52] my favorite Expressions folks is there's

[3:54] a language we use and there's a language

[3:56] that uses us and they very very hope for

[4:00] you profoundly points to right now we

[4:02] using language that's the language we

[4:04] use but the language that very clearly

[4:06] for me is using Spa like many of you is

[4:09] what she learned as a condition form of

[4:11] language based on the environment she

[4:13] was in make sense that's the tricky one

[4:16] that's the slippy one that's the

[4:17] Insidious language that drives your life

[4:20] but I'm getting a very hopefully many of

[4:22] you are getting a very clear sense of

[4:23] what maybe that language is right we're

[4:26] going to get to that okay great so Dad

[4:28] would not want to be deserved if watches

[4:31] TV you know husband's on the phone

[4:34] instagramming probably doesn't want to

[4:36] be disturbed just out of curiosity what

[4:38] do you think his experience is when he

[4:40] comes into the kitchen says what he says

[4:41] and then goes back out KES the cat like

[4:43] what is his

[4:45] reality what might be his prison that

[4:48] he's living

[4:49] in that he's supposed to fix everything

[4:52] yeah and if he's not what does that mean

[4:54] about it that is a failure yeah very

[4:57] clear that you marry someone who can't

[4:59] get anything right

[5:01] and he's angry with that so I don't know

[5:03] what your father-in-law is like but I'm

[5:05] going to guess he probably grew up in

[5:07] AEV especially in India I know that

[5:09] culture very well where there was a lot

[5:12] of judgment about who he was as a little

[5:14] boy yeah okay still yeah for sure he was

[5:20] being a little boy when he came in right

[5:22] you get it like you're both having

[5:24] attack yeah it's okay I got all the time

[5:28] and space for it I just don't want you

[5:29] to live that life

[5:30] yeah I don't he no it's exhausting so

[5:33] he's being a little boy who can't do

[5:34] anything right and that's what he hears

[5:37] not what you said he actually asked you

[5:38] the question what's going on you started

[5:40] to engage answering the question but

[5:41] he's listening through the landz off he

[5:43] can never [ __ ] do anything right he

[5:45] takes so much guilt about the fact that

[5:47] his daughter who he's probably the

[5:49] closest to I don't know that but like

[5:50] daughter dad energy just the least

[5:54] energetically and so then you live in a

[5:56] world which is very clear to me which is

[5:57] W so if he lives in the world he can't

[5:59] do anything right what's your

[6:02] want I'm not listening to I'm not heard

[6:05] and if you're not heard how do you feel

[6:08] inadequate yeah that's part of it but

[6:10] it's a little bit more it's a little bit

[6:12] more at stake for you right so what was

[6:15] it like when you came home and you

[6:17] couldn't disturb dad right and if you

[6:19] did you'd hear about it or he'd blow up

[6:22] right how did that make you feel as a

[6:23] kid I

[6:25] was and if I made too much noise or

[6:29] Ruckus I would get sanking

[6:32] yeah yeah now just from your facial

[6:35] features I can see that impact in you

[6:38] yeah yeah that's the hurt that you're

[6:40] experiencing two Primal energies that

[6:43] drive all of you I promise you is you're

[6:45] either hurt scared or both she's

[6:48] both you see that CU this all fun this

[6:52] is your husband right you got two

[6:54] beautiful kids now you're starting to

[6:56] presentence right so thank you thank you

[6:59] for going there because help you you're

[7:00] literally becoming a different person

[7:02] for which reason you can now heal

[7:04] because you're living in a prison Unown

[7:06] to yourself you have the by products of

[7:08] it and the impact of it you just don't

[7:10] know the cause of

[7:12] it so it's not inadequacy but as a kid

[7:15] growing up in environment where you

[7:16] couldn't go close to your own father for

[7:18] the fear of being

[7:20] spanked what does that feel like what is

[7:23] that kids's

[7:25] experience it's not that they're not

[7:27] good enough they're love I didn't feel

[7:29] loved for sure that's for sure I even

[7:33] would ask him to just hug me

[7:37] yeah yeah

[7:40] understand but let's just presence so

[7:42] for your daughter going in slamming the

[7:44] doors like she's had a bad day she's

[7:46] crying she's dropping F BS right she's

[7:49] upset right she's really upset we don't

[7:51] know why you may have gotten to last

[7:52] week it doesn't really

[7:54] matter but that little girl that you

[7:56] were in a house your house with your

[7:58] father who you can't go near and

[8:01] ramifications of doing that are for a

[8:03] child quite

[8:05] consequential are you walking around

[8:08] Breezy happy go lucky as a child with

[8:11] that with that energy are

[8:13] you you know I you were gregarious

[8:16] before I was until you get home right I

[8:20] hear and I it happens now when I hear my

[8:24] husband's car door shock I'm like yeah

[8:27] exactly I had that like that

[8:30] realization recently and I was just like

[8:33] yeah that's you fulfilling on the trauma

[8:35] of your own prison right that's the

[8:38] Legacy and you keep perpetuating through

[8:40] no fault of your own you're helping so

[8:42] many people especially women because

[8:43] they have this prison is the predominant

[8:45] one from nearly every woman maybe not

[8:47] the same circumstances you're in but I

[8:50] promise you they'll all relate so for

[8:51] that reason I'm grateful and Hopey they

[8:53] will show their gratitude and whatever

[8:54] for my here but I want you to go back to

[8:57] that little girl who can't even go to

[9:00] her own father for the fear of the

[9:02] ramifications so how did that little

[9:04] girl feel with the fear of whatever

[9:07] ramifications scary there you

[9:10] go W you I mean I don't want to put

[9:13] words in your mouth that is what I feel

[9:15] for you is it you were scared as a

[9:16] little girl who here as a little girl

[9:18] boy can recognize you had moments in

[9:20] your life where you were scared doesn't

[9:22] mean your parents are [ __ ] but you

[9:24] know maybe some of

[9:27] them yeah so you're scared and that I

[9:30] would say or be at the adult version

[9:32] because now you're big enough you got

[9:33] resources maybe you have an attorney

[9:34] you've got a bre you know you but you're

[9:37] going to be scared when your husband

[9:38] comes home to some

[9:40] degree right it's the diluted version

[9:42] It's the residual version so when

[9:45] someone's scared what are they saying

[9:46] about their environment that it's not

[9:49] safe

[9:51] correct just sit with that you live in a

[9:54] world where you're not safe

[9:59] presence that feel

[10:02] that what's that like to walk around

[10:04] 24/7 the illusion is it's okay when my

[10:07] husband's not there which is a terrible

[10:09] justification for it but you really live

[10:11] in a world where you fundamentally are

[10:15] safe

[10:18] yeah what's that like

[10:21] sucks you have through no fult of your

[10:24] own I'm sure you have beautiful children

[10:25] this is exactly the car where you need

[10:27] it so there's no fold here but you've

[10:29] attracted to the man who continues that

[10:32] energetic for you and likewise you to

[10:35] him because you're pter you're sharp I

[10:37] guess is you're not always that gracious

[10:39] with what you say there right which is

[10:42] exactly what he needs so that he feels

[10:44] belittled he feels criticized and judged

[10:46] which you would do a good job at

[10:48] especially when you're a woman inside of

[10:50] a world where you don't feel safe

[10:51] because you're going to be like this all

[10:53] the

[10:54] time so you're not going to necessarily

[10:56] be the most compassionate woman on the

[10:58] planet either as f as

[11:01] made doesn't make you a bad person

[11:03] doesn't make you a bad guy you got

[11:04] married for good reason you fell in love

[11:07] and I believe that's beneath the surface

[11:09] but as long as you have these stories of

[11:10] inadequacy driving your behavior you are

[11:13] in

[11:15] dysfunction

[11:17] okay so let's go back and let's look at

[11:20] this what I call this prison this Primal

[11:22] prison which as I said is the

[11:23] predominant one for most women and

[11:24] rightly so in a world where for decades

[11:27] centuries women have been abused

[11:30] right you walk out of here at night it's

[11:31] Venice Main Street hopefully it's nice

[11:34] but let's face it let's be honest A Guy

[11:36] Walks at his car five blocks prob

[11:38] doesn't think much about a woman walks

[11:39] by herself with a nice purse you put on

[11:41] a nice dress maybe tonight and it's like

[11:43] you're not going to feel as comfortable

[11:44] as the guy that's just physics right

[11:47] Fair guys listen to what I just say

[11:50] let's change

[11:51] that

[11:53] okay so if you do see someone from this

[11:56] event who is walking by themselves

[11:58] please as a gentleman maybe offer sa

[12:00] just as a suggestion okay let's change

[12:03] that no but for you living inside of the

[12:06] world that you're not safe you learned

[12:09] that from a very young age and now it

[12:11] continues to dictate the way that you

[12:13] associate relate to life and hence the

[12:15] kind of man you attracted and not just

[12:17] the man you attracted but that version

[12:19] of him because I'm sure if I met him and

[12:22] then I spoke to one of his best buddies

[12:23] at work or he plays golf with or

[12:24] whatever he's like now he's

[12:28] awesome so we always attract not just

[12:31] the person really want you to get this

[12:33] the version of the person that is most

[12:36] appropriate for our own

[12:38] color because I'm sure at some point he

[12:40] wasn't quite that person right he wasn't

[12:43] quite that aggressive or explosive right

[12:48] maybe saw semblance of it began with

[12:50] passion you know was great oh this guy's

[12:52] so fun like he's so

[12:55] driven right yes okay so then let's just

[12:58] look at this one more

[13:00] if I'm not safe so if I were and I'll

[13:03] take you through the exercise to cut you

[13:05] open am I going to find a physical

[13:07] manufacturing label of whatever material

[13:10] inside of you that says V from Mexico

[13:12] you I'm not safe no I'm not right not at

[13:17] all so where does I'm not sa

[13:21] livep it's in my mind in your mind yeah

[13:24] in your mind and it is in the form of

[13:28] what myself yeah and it's not even

[13:30] things you tell yourself anymore it's

[13:32] who you are yeah I really want you to

[13:36] get that people talk about limiting

[13:37] beliefs there are not limiting beliefs

[13:39] it's who you are for yourself there not

[13:41] who you are literally who you are as

[13:43] time is boundless Limitless looking

[13:45] through a lens of limitation of the

[13:47] deepest resources your subconscious that

[13:48] you're oblivious to for which reason you

[13:50] can't be hard accountable that's where

[13:51] the compassion comes in but this subtle

[13:54] language that is defining you then gives

[13:58] rise to whatever Bel belie and thoughts

[14:00] you have on top of that right so it's

[14:02] the Deep narrative so not only you not

[14:06] safe it's not safe for you to be you

[14:09] either yeah right just add that one how

[14:13] many people can resonate with that right

[14:15] definitely not safe for you to be you

[14:18] better become somebody else in order to

[14:20] be accepted right you said you're not

[14:21] loved that's down line that's down

[14:23] stream from well first of all you're not

[14:25] safe to start with okay now it's not

[14:28] you're not safe to be you cuz what you

[14:29] want to do is run up and get down a hug

[14:31] you want to play but it's not safe and

[14:33] it's not safe to be me and now they just

[14:36] Compound on themselves you can't even

[14:38] express yourself your own husband right

[14:42] do you see how it just consistently

[14:43] shows up everywhere

[14:45] yeah okay so if it's in your mind and

[14:47] it's wor is it an absolute truth that

[14:50] who you are is not safe no it's not

[14:53] right so as you step out of that

[14:55] realizing that's not a truth I know this

[14:57] is instantaneous I'm introducing to a

[14:59] world you're not necessarily familiar

[15:01] with what might become available for you

[15:03] if you're no longer in the world of

[15:05] you're not saved how might you just feel

[15:07] in your

[15:09] body less um

[15:11] constricted yeah I feel really tense you

[15:15] did yeah like the pain in my neck is

[15:17] gone did I tell you we put that on the

[15:20] back my first radio that was going be my

[15:23] next question how can she spoil it

[15:25] but I'm got to deal with my

[15:28] prison because also what's happening is

[15:30] when I come in you probably walked in

[15:32] here it's your second time I'm making

[15:34] all of these presumptions maybe you felt

[15:36] like you were pretty quick to your hand

[15:37] up so I'm going to lead to the fact that

[15:39] there was the assumption that you

[15:40] already had the idea that you wanted to

[15:42] talk to me I walk here what happens then

[15:44] as you get closer to the moment where

[15:45] you might have to express yourself but

[15:47] you're not safe to be

[15:51] you Isn't that cool wow wow when you

[15:56] understand physics folks and you pay

[15:58] attention it's all there

[16:00] that's crazy so as soon as I walk in I

[16:02] represent the dad and husband coming

[16:05] home your body goes into immediately its

[16:08] familiar pattern relating to anything

[16:10] that might be a perceived threat which

[16:11] means you have to go into tension which

[16:13] is why you tend to unconsciously

[16:15] actually encourage the Outburst from

[16:18] your husband because energetically it'll

[16:20] be unconscious to him you're creating

[16:23] equally an environment where he doesn't

[16:24] know that you're unsafe therefore he

[16:26] feels judgment which triggers his

[16:28] feeling that he's inadequate and not

[16:30] doing things right now you're in the

[16:32] perfect ship storm and your own ego is

[16:34] driving the

[16:35] show isn't that crazy folks is that cool

[16:38] or what yeah it's amazing I mean I know

[16:42] he's not completely I know I have my own

[16:44] [ __ ] right like I know I just didn't I

[16:47] didn't see that at all in

[16:50] you yeah of course you're a sweetheart

[16:52] as his here and I'm sure you love each

[16:54] other but you have no chance right now

[16:57] you're in pure survival because as long

[16:58] as you think you're in individual self

[17:00] you have no choice but to survive and

[17:02] you're both surviving here's the irony

[17:04] you're both surviving limitations that

[17:05] are killing

[17:06] you you're both being a right about a

[17:09] world that you define at a very young

[17:10] age through no F of your own that's

[17:12] actually suffocating the potential of

[17:13] who you are and the love that you could

[17:18] share so how do we change things well

[17:21] we're doing it right

[17:22] now is it true that you're not

[17:25] saved no it's not is it it's a story and

[17:29] I equally say you're safe but I can

[17:30] categorically say you're not not

[17:33] safe do you get that yeah you're in a

[17:35] prison I'm removing the bask what you do

[17:38] with your life is you step outside I

[17:40] don't know but it's way better than

[17:41] being behind bask right agreed yes great

[17:45] now I don't know what your husband's

[17:46] going to be like when you get home my

[17:47] guess is if you really embody this new

[17:50] energy if I am completely free because

[17:52] you are we're finding Freedom are we not

[17:56] yes yeah your body is Li you got free

[17:59] from the tension that was in your neck

[18:00] that was associated with the perceived

[18:02] threat that I walk on a stage

[18:03] representing that you might do something

[18:05] wrong because you're not safe to be you

[18:06] and this isn't a safe environment

[18:07] because you're in front of a bunch of

[18:08] strangers all of a sudden you've held

[18:11] core beautifully changed lives unbeknown

[18:13] to yourself your body's more relaxed and

[18:15] you have a new life to step

[18:18] into thank you that's pretty [ __ ]

[18:21] cool isn't it for 44 bucks

[18:24] [Applause]

[18:31] so who might you be in the absence of

[18:33] feeling fear who might you be not just

[18:35] for yourself but for your husband

[18:38] love something he can probably really

[18:41] use yeah but you've been too busy

[18:44] defending

[18:45] yourself rightly so and you have no

[18:48] choice so there's no guilt or shame you

[18:50] love him don't

[18:52] you yeah now you can be committed to a

[18:56] loving relationship versus trying to

[18:58] stay safe which is a reaction totally

[19:01] different world you step into a world of

[19:03] creation not Reaction game changer and

[19:06] last question how does that change the

[19:08] way you can relate to your kids it's

[19:10] huge yeah it's massive as a mother isn't

[19:13] it because your daughter slamming the

[19:15] door that's just generation Generation

[19:17] generation continuing the same thing

[19:19] that's your dad watching TV don't talk

[19:21] to me same thing you get to right now

[19:25] disrupt that pattern by taking

[19:28] accountability not through fault or

[19:29] guilt of being responsible for the

[19:31] energetics that you're imprinting on

[19:33] your own children I realizing holy [ __ ]

[19:35] I have taught them the language and not

[19:37] safe cuz what happened when you picked

[19:39] her up at the

[19:40] school and she got in the car she didn't

[19:43] want to talk to me shocker yeah you're

[19:46] not a safe

[19:49] SPI is that who you yeah that hurts

[19:51] doesn't

[19:52] it yeah I'm sorry but I want you to hear

[19:54] it so you can see it be responsible true

[19:57] it's true yeah she doesn't feel safe

[19:59] around you nor shouldn't you you don't

[20:00] feel safe around

[20:02] you but now you can and you can clean

[20:05] that up with her and it will be the most

[20:06] powerful impact especially on a

[20:08] team she loves you she doesn't know

[20:10] where the [ __ ] to go but she knows

[20:13] energetically unconsciously that she

[20:14] can't talk to you and she probably feels

[20:17] a lot of guilt because she knows if she

[20:18] does that you'll go to Dad and Dad gets

[20:20] pissed and so she's got double

[20:21] protection to go that's a lot of

[20:24] pressure for a

[20:25] team you see that so they got a new mom

[20:29] he got a new

[20:31] wife that's pretty cool we all got a new

[20:35] friend hopefully everyone got to send

[20:37] more

[20:38] freedom and you don't have a shitty NE

[20:43] anymore okay thank you so

[20:49] much this was one of my favorite

[20:51] conversations by the way have you seen H

[20:53] I barely recognized that how's the

[20:55] couch the couch is gone okay good give

[20:59] us an update my dear so it was a total

[21:01] out ofbody experience when I spoke to

[21:03] you like I don't really remember much

[21:05] after I left I just felt like I was kind

[21:08] of high mhm and when I got home

[21:12] immediately the energy shifted I was

[21:14] just like in this really good place my

[21:17] dogs came to greet me and I just threw

[21:19] myself on the floor and just let them

[21:21] lick me and you know and then I went

[21:23] into my son's room he was already asleep

[21:26] um but I gave him a cuddle and he woke

[21:28] up and he was like being very

[21:29] affectionate so that was really nice and

[21:31] then I walked into my daughter's room

[21:33] and my husband and my daughter were

[21:35] laying on her bed and they were cracking

[21:37] up and having the best time and it was

[21:39] just really nice to see yeah and my

[21:42] daughter asked me to cuddle she's 16 you

[21:44] know so that was really sweet and that's

[21:47] very rare 16-year-old daughter with a

[21:48] mother yeah yeah and so um my husband

[21:51] said I'll let you two hang out I'm going

[21:53] to go to bed okay so I cuddled with her

[21:57] and she then went on about in in a

[22:00] really nice way how I haven't been

[22:02] cuddling with her I haven't been telling

[22:04] her I love her I haven't been

[22:06] affectionate or wanting to spend time

[22:08] with her yeah and I was just you know

[22:10] broke down in tears I didn't realize how

[22:12] far up my own ARS I was basically thank

[22:15] you for using the r being the

[22:18] British the translation that's ass

[22:21] but

[22:23] Dar so it was really nice to cuddle with

[22:26] her and I just felt I felt really good

[22:29] and then I went to bed and I laid I went

[22:33] into my room laid in bed and I held my

[22:36] husband's hand H

[22:38] and said thank you I love you and we

[22:41] went to bed and that I'm assuming is not

[22:44] typical as a behavior right no not not

[22:47] lately like yeah yeah very resentful

[22:50] very stuck in my own suffering and

[22:52] suffocating he's the cause of your yeah

[22:55] yeah he's a piece of [ __ ] yeah I'm right

[22:58] okay that's good enough

[22:58] [Laughter]

[23:01] we don't want to go

[23:07] back two weeks after the event he he's

[23:11] just like what is going on with you like

[23:13] what is happening that's the Comm

[23:15] reaction from yeah he's like I don't

[23:17] want to um he's like I don't know what

[23:19] you're doing are you taking some hippie

[23:21] drugs or

[23:23] something and I was like who had a

[23:25] cookie here

[23:26] just should kick in at about 50 15

[23:29] minutes you're old

[23:32] [ __ ] sorry anyway yeah hippie drugs

[23:36] hippie drugs and they said well actually

[23:38] no um have I didn't want to say anything

[23:41] I wanted to let things kind of unfold

[23:44] and see how things panned out before I

[23:47] said anything I said well I spoke at the

[23:50] last Peter Crone event and he was like

[23:52] what the

[23:54] [ __ ] he's like what do you mean he's

[23:56] like you told these people are and I was

[23:58] like like yeah he's like well and he's

[24:00] just sitting there trying to process and

[24:01] he's like well [ __ ] it who cares I'm

[24:04] just happy with the results yeah and he

[24:07] told me the other

[24:08] day um tell Peter next time you see him

[24:13] that I feel the love from you and I know

[24:18] that you love me so tell him I said

[24:20] Thank

[24:21] you thank you thank you so much and uh I

[24:25] hope that you get to go home and hold

[24:26] his hand again and tell him and that you

[24:28] continue to very beautiful freedom and

[24:29] love and harmony in your house cuz

[24:31] that's not the trajectory that you were

[24:32] on when we met last month one other

[24:35] thing I'd like to say quickly is um the

[24:37] shift has rippled into my kids too uh

[24:40] sure before my son said that he doesn't

[24:43] like to be home because of how much we

[24:46] fight yeah and he's been coming home

[24:49] every day after school and wanting to

[24:51] hang out it's been really nice as soon

[24:54] as I saw you walk in you are a different

[24:56] human being and that's what available

[24:59] folks like not it doesn't have to be

[25:00] through me just through the

[25:02] understanding of that the you that you

[25:03] are for yourself is a lie not bad you

[25:07] don't have to necessarily do anything

[25:09] about it but if it's based in any kind

[25:10] of limitation insecurity scarcity

[25:12] usually some sort of not I'm not

[25:14] something for surveer not safe for many

[25:16] of you not good enough not loved not

[25:18] wanted not going to be okay is a very

[25:20] popular one wherever you can find

[25:22] whatever it is that you're dealing with

[25:23] try and find the underlying not and it's

[25:25] a play on words right it's a kot t in

[25:27] terms of your psyche your Spirit your

[25:29] freedom there's some kind of

[25:31] limitation so when I get to hear these

[25:34] stories and hopefully for you too it's

[25:35] so moving right because what better way

[25:37] to spend my days or to live life than to

[25:39] help people discover freedom to end

[25:43] suffering and until you do that not only

[25:45] for yourself but the people around you

[25:47] you're always going to be in some state

[25:48] of suffering which is why I love to get

[25:50] to do what I get to do you know for me

[25:51] it's sort of it could say that to a

[25:53] certain extent there's a selfish Mission

[25:55] here which is I just want more people

[25:57] who are free to play with

[25:59] I just want more people to be in a state

[26:00] of love

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Trauma patterns become the 'language' you learned to survive—withdrawal, rage, people-pleasing, criticism—and you unconsciously repeat them with your partner. If your parent was unapproachable and angry, you may feel unsafe with any emotional expression in your partner. If you learned you had to fix things or be worthless, you may compulsively try to control your relationships. These patterns activate your partner's wounds, creating a locked cycle.
Your nervous system learned early that stress in a parental figure meant danger—anger, rejection, abandonment. So when your partner shows stress now, your body reads it as a threat, even if your rational mind knows intellectually that they're just having a bad day. This is not a character flaw; it's a survival mechanism that needs gentle rewiring.
Yes, but not because understanding magically fixes things. It works because once you see the pattern—that your partner's rage comes from shame, not from who you are—you stop taking it personally and stop trying to control it. You also stop repeating your own inherited response. The system shifts because at least one person is operating from awareness instead of autopilot.
An invisible prison is an unconscious pattern from childhood that controls your behavior without your awareness. You only notice the results—anxiety, conflict, feeling unheard—but not the cause. Once you become conscious of the pattern, it stops being invisible and you gain agency over whether to repeat it.
The moment you become aware of your inherited pattern, you interrupt it. If you realize your daughter is learning to withdraw because you withdraw, you can practice staying present instead. If you notice your son is learning shame because you explode, you can begin to regulate yourself. You don't heal for yourself first and then your kids benefit—your healing IS your gift to them.
Because they're not aware of their own prison yet. If he was taught as a child that his worth depends on being the fixer, he genuinely experiences your complaint as evidence of his failure. He's not being malicious; he's reacting from an unconscious script. Real accountability becomes possible only after he sees his own pattern.
