The Shape of the Teaching

Joel Cross, who works online as A Soul Called Joel, teaches from an unusual position: he is a certified meditation teacher and mindfulness coach, and also a Grammy-nominated guitarist and songwriter. The two are not kept in separate rooms. His stated aim is to help people "come home to themselves through stillness, sound and self-awareness," and the format of his work follows from that.

The public record on what a session feels like is thin, and it is worth saying so. The material available describes the tone more than the choreography. The invitation is to arrive "exactly as you are, without performance or pretense." That suggests a teacher who sets the room's terms by lowering its demands for display, not one who commands a stage. His voice, as heard on the Emotional Evolution podcast, is described as warm, clear and non-dogmatic, oriented toward relational insight rather than mystical proclamation. Through his Beautiful Souls community he offers daily guidance and live meditation, so much of the teaching happens in small, repeated doses rather than in a single dramatic event. He has also been scheduled at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on October 16. Residential settings like that typically imply longer containers for practice, but the specifics of his program there are not spelled out, and nothing here should be read as a detailed account of a retreat day.

Recurring Themes

The most persistent theme is the movement from reaction to response. It is the subject of his podcast and the center of his framing. Meditation, in his hands, is less a route to transcendence than a way to build the capacity to pause between a trigger and what one does with it. He names stress, anxiety, depression and emotional turmoil plainly rather than treating them as obstacles to be rising above.

The second theme is return. "Coming home" recurs: to oneself, to the heart, to the breath. His own summary is blunt: "The practice isn't about becoming someone new. It's about coming home to who you've always been." That is a claim worth testing rather than simply admiring, since it sits in tension with the language of self-actualization he also uses. The R.I.S.E. Journal, his meditative journaling practice, is explicitly aimed at self-actualization. The teaching holds both ideas at once: nothing needs to be added to you, and yet there is potential to expand into. How those fit together is left for the student to work out.

A third thread is acceptance and nature. His love of remote trails, campfires and time in his RV is part of the biography he offers, and his music weaves together nature, poetry and guitar. Presence, in this teaching, is less a technique than a way of belonging.

The Questions He Pushes

He does not appear to hand out doctrines, so the work is best described through the questions it implies. What do you do in the moment between feeling something and acting on it? Who are you when you are not performing? What would it mean to be at home in yourself rather than improved? The journaling practice puts these on paper, which makes avoidance harder. The approach assumes a willingness to look at one's own patterns, and it does not supply answers from outside.

Delivery: Music, Poetry, Silence

The aesthetic is acoustic and restrained. His music is built around guitar and voice, measured in pacing, closer to a held space than a performance. His catalog includes interpretations of standards such as "Hallelujah," "Georgia on My Mind," "Stand by Me" and "Crazy Love," along with originals like "Hold You," "Waves" and "Gray." Poetry and nature imagery run through his own work. Scripture is not a documented feature of his delivery, and nothing available indicates humor or storytelling as signature devices, so those should not be assumed. What the record supports is sound, spareness and a gentle, intimate register.

Who It Lands For, and Who May Bounce

It suits people who want practical tools for emotional awareness and who are comfortable with therapeutic language. Newcomers need no background; the entry points, the podcast and the journal, are low-commitment. People from busy, secular lives seeking help with stress will likely find the framing familiar.

It is less likely to satisfy anyone looking for a guru relationship, formal transmission, or esoteric initiation. Those wanting high-energy, polished music or motivational content will find something slower. People who prefer external structure or behavioral fixes may find the open-endedness frustrating, and those allergic to spiritual or emotional vocabulary will meet it constantly. The work also asks for participation. Passive listening gets a student only so far.

The Wider Tradition

The bio names no lineage, teacher or guru, and none should be assigned. What can be said is that he describes more than a decade of research and practice, and that his framing is contemporary and mindfulness-informed, centered on emotional healing and self-awareness rather than doctrine. His blend of music, poetry and meditation is an eclectic modern synthesis rather than a transmission from a named school. Students who want to know whom he studied with will need to ask him directly or look to his website.
