Emm Gryner is a Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with three Juno Award nominations. She founded Dead Daisy Records, one of the first independent record labels in Canada, to support emerging artists.
She has collaborated with David Bowie, contributing vocals on tour and in the studio. She also worked with Def Leppard on a reimagined "Pour Some Sugar On Me" featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, based on her 2000 cover. She co-created the first music video in space, a rendition of "Space Oddity" with astronaut Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station. Her latest album, Business & Pleasure, explores yacht rock with contributions from Nashville musicians.
Gryner is also an author and a certified coach. Her book The Healing Power of Singing (ECW Press, 2021) is part guide to finding one's voice and part memoir. She helps people find their voice, build confidence and live with purpose, blending rock-and-roll grit with science-based coaching. Her voice masterclasses are aimed at singers, or former singers, whose voices have become tight, quiet or overly controlled. She teaches that the work is often less about learning more technique than about removing the habits that get in the way of the voice working as it naturally wants to. She has also led performance and expression workshops for women and non-binary participants.
In 2024 she started the metal band Ovary Axe, where she is principal songwriter, bass player and vocalist.
Worth Knowing
Emm Gryner is a Canadian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, author and certified coach with three Juno Award nominations. She founded Dead Daisy Records, one of the first independent record labels in Canada, to support emerging artists. She has contributed vocals to David Bowie's tour and studio work, and her 2000 cover of Pour Some Sugar On Me became the basis for a reimagined version with Def Leppard and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She also co-created the first music video shot in space, a rendition of Space Oddity with astronaut Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station. Listeners who know her for those rock and pop credits are often surprised by how analytical her recent work has become, especially in The Healing Power of Singing (ECW Press, 2021), a book that is part guide to finding one's voice and part memoir. Her current songwriting, including the 2023 album Business & Pleasure, leans into yacht rock, which shows she has kept writing songs alongside her coaching.
