Stephen Fulder, Ph.D., is a Buddhist teacher and author, and one of Israel's leading spiritual teachers. Born in 1946 and raised in North London, he studied at Oxford University and received a Ph.D. from the National Institute for Medical Research. A year in India in 1976 turned his attention to alternative and complementary medicine, a field in which he worked and wrote 14 books over some 40 years. India was also the source of a lasting commitment to spiritual life: he has practised meditation and dharma since 1976, largely within the Theravada Buddhist framework, with long-term inspiration from Dzogchen and Advaita teachings.
In 1995 he founded Tovana, the Israel Insight Meditation Society, which he describes as the major Buddhist practice organisation in the country. It was shaped by a non-sectarian approach and a more open practice style in the Thai Forest tradition of Ajahn Chah, guided by Christopher Titmuss, one of his first and main teachers. Its teachings are offered on a donation basis, in the spirit of dana, so that people from all backgrounds can take part. Stephen has taught intensively for around 25 years, mostly in Israel, leading retreats, annual courses and classes and guiding local teachers and instructors.
His teaching draws on the simplicity and immediacy of the early Buddhist texts and the Insight lineage. It includes mindfulness, Vipassana, loving kindness, compassion, equanimity and samadhi, and is ultimately about a deep refinement of mind, heart, speech, action and relationship with the world. He teaches through talks, dialogue, practice guidance and one-on-one meetings, at all levels from newcomers to experienced practitioners. He has also taken meditation into pubs and bars under the title "Buddha at the Bar", offering a more hopeful view to young people.
Stephen's books include What's Beyond Mindfulness: Waking Up to This Precious Life (Watkins, 2019) and The Five Powers (Aster, an imprint of Hachette UK). He has been involved in peace making and ecological campaigning in the Middle East, and lives in an alternative ecological community that he helped to found, growing his own food and medicines and being a hands-on grandparent.
Worth Knowing
Stephen Fulder, Ph.D., is a Buddhist teacher, author and Meditation Teacher who has practised meditation and dharma since first going to India in 1976. Born in 1946 and raised in North London, he studied at Oxford University and earned a Ph.D. from the National Institute for Medical Research before turning to alternative and complementary medicine, a field in which he worked and wrote 14 books over some 40 years. His central public role is as founder in 1995 of Tovana, the Israel Insight Meditation Society, which he describes as the major Buddhist practice organisation in the country. People follow him for a combination that is uncommon in mindfulness circles: a scientist's training, a long medical-writing career, and a plain, practice-first Insight teaching. He is also known for Buddha at the Bar, a project that took meditation into pubs and bars with a hopeful message aimed at younger people. Serious students value that he has taught intensively for around 25 years, mostly in Israel, grounding his work in retreats, annual courses and the training of local teachers.
