Born on July 14, 1936, in New York City, she began life far from the monastery walls where she would eventually make her home, raised in what she has described as a traditional American family. When Everything Falls Apart

The turning point in Chodron's life came through the kind of suffering that shatters certainty. An English degree from the University of California, Berkeley, couldn't protect her from grief. Neither could the conventional wisdom of her upbringing.
