Where to Start with Cheryl B. Engelhardt: A Beginner's Guide

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with Luminary, her 2020 solo-piano and ambient album. Cheryl B. Engelhardt composed it during a residency in a mountain town in Greece, and she designed it to ease anxiety and offer focus, or what she describes as energetic peace. It reached #1 on both the Amazon and iTunes New Age charts, so it has proven itself with listeners well beyond ambient specialists. It is also the purest distillation of her aesthetic: uncluttered, slow, and intentional, with space between the notes. Play it start to finish, ideally without doing anything else.

The Next Places to Go

The Passenger. This is the GRAMMY-nominated album she composed entirely aboard a nine-day cross-country train journey, after the loss of her friend and collaborator Kevin Archambault. It works at larger emotional scale than Luminary, and it is notable as one of the first ambient records composed, mixed, and mastered entirely by women.

According to the Moon. Her collaboration with the Australian artist Gem earned a second GRAMMY nomination in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category. The palette expands slightly while the meditative approach holds.

Her Insight Timer page. This is where her guided meditations live. If Luminary is the music, this is the teaching: the place to hear how she thinks about sound, silence, and daily practice.

If you want to hear the classical side, Quantum Entanglement, recorded with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra and conducted by Michelle Rakers, shows her orchestral training at full ensemble scale.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect restraint. The pacing is slow, and the records don't build toward drama or momentum. They are static or gently shifting sound environments meant to create calm. The instruments are mostly acoustic, centered on piano, with chamber and orchestral textures when she scales up. Her voice, when it appears, is one texture among others rather than a lead. The overall feel is composed rather than merely atmospheric, a classical chamber sensibility without the lo-fi or glitchy character of some ambient music.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Assuming it's devotional music. Her work is not tied to a religious or Eastern lineage, and it isn't built on mantras or doctrine. Her background is formal Western classical training, including orchestration at Juilliard, filtered through meditation and wellness. She is also a certified trauma-informed coach, and her teaching draws on her own experience of anxiety and panic attacks.

Expecting energy. If you come from beat-driven or dynamic film-score listening, the ambient albums will feel sparse. They are meant to.

Treating it as wallpaper. Because the music is quiet, it's easy to dismiss as background. The sparseness is the design, and it rewards attention.

Assuming she's a one-lane specialist. She began in a hip-hop recording studio, moved through jingles, film, theater, and choral work, and made four pop records before arriving at ambient and new age music. She also wrote the musical Boiler Room Girls and the choral piece The Listening, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King's 1967 speech "Beyond Vietnam." The calm albums are one facet of a wide career.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It lands hardest when your nervous system is the problem: stretches of anxiety, racing thoughts, or difficulty focusing. Luminary was built for exactly that. The Passenger tends to meet people in grief, since it was made in the wake of loss and carries that honesty. It also suits anyone building a meditation habit who wants music with real compositional depth rather than generic spa sound. Her work asks for some interest in meditation, ambient music, or contemporary classical, but no prior expertise.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Listen to Luminary in full, seated, with no other task.

Day 2: Use Luminary as background for focused work, and notice whether it changes your concentration.

Day 3: Open her Insight Timer page and try one guided meditation.

Day 4: Listen to The Passenger in full. Note how its scale and emotional range differ from Luminary.

Day 5: Repeat the Insight Timer meditation, this time with Luminary playing afterward.

Day 6: Listen to According to the Moon and compare how the collaboration changes the sound.

Day 7: Return to Luminary. Notice what you hear now that you missed on day one, then check cbemusic.com for current releases, coaching, and retreat offerings.
