[0:24] Um,
[0:28] as you probably know, this is a a hymn
[0:30] to Hanuman.
[0:33] And
[0:34] on the very basic level, what it does is
[0:38] describe
[0:40] many of his qualities
[0:43] uh and many of the events that happened
[0:46] in uh in the Ramayana with Ram and the
[0:49] war against the uh the demons against
[0:53] Ravena. Ra's armies.
[0:57] Ravena represents the ego. He has 10
[1:00] heads which represent the five senses
[1:03] and the objects
[1:05] and the ego kidnaps
[1:09] the shakti
[1:12] because it wants to be it wants the
[1:14] shakti but the funny thing is in the
[1:17] story
[1:19] ravena can't actually
[1:22] uh how to say it
[1:25] get it on with shakti
[1:28] because unless Unless the shakti agrees
[1:30] to it, Ravena's head will explode in a
[1:34] thousand pieces. And of course, Sitha
[1:37] would never agree
[1:39] to uh
[1:42] getting it on with anybody except Rah.
[1:45] And it's a very subtle story. In fact,
[1:48] Sitha, it's not even Sitha who's
[1:50] kidnapped.
[1:52] It's a a heavenly absara, one of the
[1:56] heavenly goddesses who is cursed.
[1:59] by Indra. So she had to take a birth,
[2:03] she had to incarnate on earth and so she
[2:05] switched out with Sitha.
[2:09] It's a really cool story. Most people
[2:11] say, "Oh, how could Ram teach treat
[2:13] Sitha that way?
[2:16] Give yourself a break. Don't get
[2:18] involved with that. It's not like that
[2:20] at all." In fact, like I said, Sitta
[2:23] actually is not kidnapped. She just goes
[2:25] into her subt a subtle form and this
[2:28] other being is kidnapped
[2:31] and um
[2:35] anyhow so Rah is wandering around
[2:40] forlorlorn and brokenhearted. He can't
[2:42] find Sitha. Has no clue where she might
[2:44] be. And in the forest he meets this
[2:48] monkey
[2:50] who shows up and introduces himself.
[2:56] And at that point, Hanuman is the
[2:59] ambassador of the king of monkeys.
[3:03] And he greets Rama. And he he uh
[3:08] because of this an alliance is made
[3:11] between Rama and the monkeys.
[3:15] And all the monkeys go out in search of
[3:17] Sitha and
[3:19] uh they can't find her and there's only
[3:21] one place left on the earth where they
[3:24] haven't looked where they haven't been
[3:25] able to look and that's the island of
[3:28] Lanka which is now called Silang and
[3:30] actually now it's called Lanca again
[3:33] and so finally Hanuman jumps over the
[3:36] ocean and finds Sitha
[3:40] and then comes back and tells Ram where
[3:42] she is and then there's a big battle.
[3:44] and the demons, the negative forces are
[3:48] destroyed.
[3:55] All this there's a a macrocosm and
[3:57] there's a microcosm. All this exists
[3:59] within the body within the human
[4:02] incarnation as well. Hanuman in
[4:05] Ayurveda, Hanuman is considered the
[4:07] prana in the body
[4:11] and he's con he's called the son of the
[4:14] wind the wind god
[4:17] and the wind and prana is the energy in
[4:20] the body
[4:22] and uh that energy is supposed to flow
[4:26] through the 84,000
[4:28] nadis or channels in the body but many
[4:32] of those channels are blocked by our
[4:34] emotional
[4:36] stuff and all kinds of stuff.
[4:50] Maharaji said chanting the Hanaman
[4:53] chalisa can change fate
[4:59] can change karma
[5:02] can free us of negative karmmas.
[5:05] And the way I think about it now after a
[5:08] lot of years of thinking about it
[5:11] is that our emotional stuff is
[5:16] stored in our uh in a subtle body in the
[5:19] nadis and hanuman as the prana
[5:25] can clear out those channels.
[5:29] So for instance you know all our
[5:32] all our stuff our programming is pretty
[5:34] much in our subtle body. All our em
[5:36] emotional traumas our likes our dislikes
[5:40] a lot of karmas are are stored there.
[5:44] And so through through invoking the
[5:46] presence of Hanuman which is prana in
[5:50] the body as well those emotional that
[5:53] emotional stuff is wiped out is washed
[5:55] away opened up and it frees us from a
[6:00] lot of the uh
[6:05] the stuff that we do
[6:07] with no vote because we have no vote.
[6:10] our our likes and dislikes, our
[6:13] emotional triggers and all that stuff.
[6:16] So,
[6:23] so it's a it's a long hymn. It's very
[6:25] difficult to learn it. Uh you don't have
[6:28] to to memorize it. You can read it. You
[6:32] can chant it with or without music. It
[6:34] doesn't have to have music.
[6:37] But when you do this practice,
[6:40] you should definitely
[6:43] feel that you are offering each line to
[6:48] Hanuman, to Maharaji.
[6:50] And that almost like a piece of fruit,
[6:53] like an offering. Each line, every word,
[6:56] every line is a way of connecting with
[7:01] with that
[7:07] atma shaki with the with the energy of
[7:10] your own soul.
[7:17] Every line Maharaji said every line of
[7:19] Hanamanisa is Mahamantra
[7:22] is the name. Mahamantra means the name.
[7:26] All the names are Mahamantra.
[7:30] Period.
[7:33] And uh so all these this whole practice
[7:36] is is the repetition of the name as
[7:38] well. And you know what he said about
[7:40] the name through the repetition of the
[7:43] name everything is accomplished.
[7:47] Yes. That too that too that too
[7:52] everything is accomplished.
[7:56] So, and and and
[7:59] there's a a direct [clears throat]
[8:01] correlation between how difficult a
[8:03] practices and how much benefit you get
[8:06] from doing it.
[8:09] Right? You would figure it would have to
[8:13] be that way. Like the longer mantras, if
[8:16] you do 108 Har Krishna mantras, that
[8:19] takes a while. If you do 108 Rams, you
[8:21] can do it in about a second and a half.
[8:23] You know
[8:25] I remember being in India and these
[8:26] sadhus come up go like
[8:29] give me money give me money make me give
[8:31] give me money money money money money
[8:32] money money money money money money
[8:32] money money money money money money
[8:32] money money money money you know like
[8:34] that doesn't really work but 100 108 guy
[8:39] mantras or 108 mantras with a lot of
[8:41] words that takes and so it generates
[8:45] more shaki as well it generates more
[8:48] movement into your own heart so to speak
[8:51] Bill,
[8:54] do you have the words somewhere? Do you
[8:56] all have the words? Okay, we're we're
[9:00] not going to sing 11 chises because
[9:02] we're not going to. We'll sing a few and
[9:05] then we'll talk a little bit, then we'll
[9:06] sing a few more. Okay.

[22:42] [singing]
[22:46] [music and singing]
[22:49] Oh,
[23:12] so
[23:14] there we were in India,
[23:17] fresh out of New York
[23:21] and
[23:23] we we didn't know what to do.
[23:27] We recognized that there were certainly
[23:29] a lot of cultural
[23:32] stuff that we were just completely
[23:34] unaware of.
[23:37] And more than that, we wanted to get
[23:40] closer to Maharaji. We wanted to feel
[23:43] closer and spend more time with him.
[23:47] And uh but in the early days, he would
[23:51] see us one day and say, "Okay, come back
[23:53] in a week."
[23:55] A week? You know, and what do we have
[23:58] nothing to do back in Nanita? Walk
[23:59] around, get depressed,
[24:02] smoke some dope, you know, not much to
[24:05] do.
[24:07] But um so one day uh where's Romesh? Is
[24:12] he here? No, he's asleep.
[24:13] >> He's right there.
[24:14] >> Oh, you're awake. We came to the temple
[24:17] one day.
[24:18] Every time we came to the temple, they
[24:20] handed us a little a little booklet,
[24:24] yellow booklet with a picture of a
[24:25] flying monkey on it. I had about a
[24:29] hundred of them in my room.
[24:32] And finally one day the light went on
[24:36] and I said, "Hey, what is this?"
[24:40] You think, you know, so the guy said,
[24:43] "Well, it's a it's a hymn to Hanuman."
[24:46] Oh.
[24:48] So
[24:50] we decided we would try to learn it
[24:53] because we knew that if we learned it,
[24:56] we could sing it to Maharaji. and we
[24:59] knew that he secretly wanted to spend
[25:01] more time with the westerners,
[25:04] but he was having trouble arranging it.
[25:06] So, we just thought we'd try to help
[25:07] him.
[25:11] And as it turned out, due to Ramdas's um
[25:17] I don't quite know how to say this.
[25:21] Uh
[25:23] let's let me think about it for a
[25:25] second.
[25:27] Let's let let's be compassionate and say
[25:29] Ramdas's desire to become enlightened
[25:32] faster than the speed of light.
[25:36] We had arranged he had arranged for one
[25:38] of our Buddhist meditation teachers to
[25:40] come spend the whole rainy season with
[25:42] us way further up in the mountains
[25:46] uh in a town called Kosani. And the idea
[25:49] was that three or four of us or five of
[25:51] us were going to and Ramdas we're going
[25:54] to live in this house together with this
[25:56] guy and wham bam thank you ma'am we were
[25:58] going to get enlightened.
[26:02] So
[26:04] what happened was we got up there and
[26:07] then we get a letter from our Buddhist
[26:09] meditation teacher saying sorry can't
[26:11] make it.
[26:13] >> Mother is sick.
[26:14] >> Huh?
[26:15] >> Mother is sick. Yeah, his mother was
[26:17] sick so he couldn't make it.
[26:21] So there we were five hours away from
[26:25] Maharaji
[26:27] for the whole rainy season. And if you
[26:30] think about it, he just transferred us.
[26:32] He just said out move and he moved all
[26:35] the western and then all the westerners
[26:37] that came to the temple, he'd send up go
[26:39] be with Ramdas.
[26:41] So Randas had to actually move out of
[26:43] our house and move across the valley,
[26:46] the little valley into another place
[26:49] where all these other westerners came
[26:51] and it was like uh Ramdas became the
[26:53] baba of another little ashram up there.
[26:57] But we were together in this other
[27:00] little house. So we we learned the Hindi
[27:02] alphabet. We didn't know it. And then we
[27:04] went through this chilisa letter by
[27:07] letter and wrote it out. It took about
[27:10] what? Three months, huh? What? We're
[27:13] still counting, you know. And then uh
[27:16] and then this this guy we met up there,
[27:18] he taught us this melody
[27:21] and so we we p and then [clears throat]
[27:24] we taught it to a bunch of the other
[27:26] westerners and we made on on a Tuesday.
[27:30] Then now the rainy season is over and we
[27:32] came back down. We're in Nanal and
[27:34] seeing Maharaji again.
[27:37] We decided that we were going to do the
[27:40] first puja to Maharaji done by
[27:44] westerners and we arranged on Tuesday
[27:47] which is Hanuman's day to have 80 pounds
[27:51] 80 pounds of ladus delivered to the
[27:54] temple with all the the the plates for
[27:57] the puja the dishes and the the arty
[28:00] lamp and everything and we were going to
[28:02] sing hanumanchalisa to Maharaji on
[28:04] Tuesday.
[28:07] So, and it was a big secret.
[28:11] Nobody, you know, we didn't tell
[28:12] anybody.
[28:14] And of course, we hadn't memorized the
[28:16] chalice yet. We were singing it, but we
[28:18] didn't memorize it. So, we get to the
[28:20] temple on Monday and we're sitting
[28:23] outside waiting for Maharaji to come out
[28:26] and he bursts through the doors of his
[28:29] room. He sits down. He says, "Anumalisa,
[28:32] sing it now.
[28:35] We went running for our books, you know,
[28:37] what are we doing? Ah, yeah. What are we
[28:38] going to do? And we were standing in
[28:40] front of him and we started to sing. And
[28:42] I'll never forget I got to the six
[28:44] verse. What was that? Uh,
[28:47] I can't go. Anyway, I made a mistake in
[28:50] pronunciation and he tried to correct me
[28:54] and I went
[28:57] and he went, "Never mind, never mind.
[28:58] Just sing." And from that moment on, he
[29:01] never corrected anybody, any westerner
[29:03] anymore about pronunciation.
[29:07] So
[29:09] that transformed
[29:12] these crazy westerners into a troop of
[29:15] performing monkeys.
[29:19] And whenever the Indian people were
[29:21] giving him a hard time, he said, "New,
[29:23] come on over here." And then we would
[29:25] all gather around them and we would sing
[29:27] Hanumanisa. And you know in India they
[29:31] they have respect for your airspace.
[29:34] They don't step over your over you. So
[29:38] we would get around Maharaji and they'd
[29:40] be like locked out behind us and they
[29:43] couldn't even see him. You know we're
[29:44] standing there singing and they're like
[29:45] going what's going on here? you know,
[29:49] so he would do that quot and so we got
[29:51] to sing it to him many many many times
[29:54] and um
[29:59] you see we we we understood that the
[30:03] west the Indians
[30:06] saw him as Hanuman himself
[30:09] and they had told us many of their
[30:10] experiences when they actually had a
[30:14] vision of Hanuman w with Maharaji. For
[30:18] instance, sometimes someone would come
[30:20] to the temple
[30:22] and
[30:24] like a cuz it was on a on a pilgrimage
[30:26] place. Many times it were like tour
[30:28] buses. Somebody would come through the
[30:30] temple and they'd
[30:33] they go to the Hanaman temple and they'd
[30:35] bow and instead of seeing Hanaman they
[30:37] would see a guy sitting there with a
[30:40] blanket on and they would say they would
[30:43] ask somebody in the temple who's the guy
[30:44] in the temple sitting who's and they
[30:47] said what are you talking about and they
[30:48] go back and look and there's Hanuman
[30:49] instead of it was Maharaji giving them a
[30:52] a shot.
[30:57] So
[31:07] >> clean.
[31:10] >> Remeas wants you to know that the next
[31:13] time you get your teeth cleaned in the
[31:14] dentist office, you can hear the Hanuman
[31:17] Chalisa on Spotify.
[31:25] So, not only will your teeth get pulled
[31:27] out, but you'll lose some bad karmas.
[31:31] So, uh let's see
[31:34] the funny thing about
[31:37] us learning from the Indian devotees.
[31:41] One of my guru told me a story. He said,
[31:43] "We saw that the Indian people would
[31:45] come with these very soft apples and
[31:48] they would cut the apple up in small
[31:50] pieces and offer it to Maharaji." So one
[31:53] day one of these guys Balaramdas decided
[31:57] to do that. He said he came into the
[32:00] room there were some Indian people there
[32:01] Indian devotees and he sat down in front
[32:04] of Maharaji and he cut the apple and he
[32:06] offered it to Maharaji. He said the look
[32:09] on Maharaji's face was the way you would
[32:14] look if your dog sat up and started
[32:16] talking to you.
[32:23] That's kind of the way he saw us. Yeah.
[32:26] [music]
[32:28] So,
[32:31] Hanamanchalisa is it's a hymn. It's an
[32:33] invocation.
[32:35] It's almost like a jigsaw puzzle.
[32:39] Every piece is a is putting is creating
[32:44] that form of Hanuman within us. That now
[32:47] what is Hanuman also? because it's just
[32:49] some monkey that jumps around out there.
[32:52] Maharaji said Hanuman, Krishna and
[32:55] Christ are the same.
[32:59] And you know there's a book called the
[33:02] unvarnished New Testament which is a
[33:05] translation
[33:07] of the New Testament from the original
[33:09] Greek.
[33:11] And in the King James
[33:14] uh they talk about Holy Spirit, right?
[33:17] But in the original Greek what's it's
[33:21] translated as holy breath
[33:26] very different spirit is out there
[33:28] somewhere else breath is in the body
[33:32] breath is here not somewhere else is
[33:35] very different and once again breath and
[33:38] prana are linked as well so hanuman and
[33:42] christ are very similar
[33:46] direct connections to the one.
[34:03] All right. So, [music] we'll sing a
[34:04] couple of more.
[34:08] [music]
[34:17] >> [music]
[34:18] >> Okay, wait before we do that
[34:22] the first four lines or eight lines are
[34:26] called chopai. It's a different meter
[34:28] and it's an introduction to the
[34:29] Hanumanalisa
[34:31] and it's a very important little piece
[34:34] of the puzzle.
[34:37] Shri guru
[34:42] nijanu mukuru sudari. So that line
[34:46] it likens the uh the dust from the lotus
[34:50] feet from the feet of the guru as the
[34:52] pollen from a lotus flower.
[34:55] And it says I take that pollen-like dust
[34:58] from the lotus feet of the guru to clean
[35:02] the mirror of my heart.
[35:10] This concept of the mir of the heart
[35:12] being a mirror is very interesting. When
[35:15] we look in a mirror and it's covered
[35:18] with dust and dirt, we see a very
[35:22] distorted
[35:24] unaccurate view of what's of what's in
[35:27] the mirror of our own face
[35:30] because of the dust on the mirror.
[35:33] So we take the the the the pollen like
[35:36] dust from the lotus feet of the guru
[35:39] which is called chan amred which is
[35:42] consciousness, bliss, reality, love,
[35:47] real love to clean the mirror of our
[35:50] hearts and then we begin to sing the
[35:53] praises of hanuman and ram.
[36:00] That's why this practice is a
[36:02] purification practice. It cleans the
[36:04] mirror of the heart
[36:08] because we
[36:11] we're all of us each one of us is seeing
[36:15] our own version of what we think is out
[36:18] there.
[36:20] And as many beings as there are in the
[36:22] world, that's how many versions
[36:25] of the world there are.
[36:28] Everybody sees their own subjective
[36:30] reality as though because of the dust on
[36:33] the mirror of the heart. The lust, the
[36:36] anger, the greed, the shame, the fear,
[36:38] the selfishness. This is what the dust
[36:41] is. Egoistic stuff.
[36:45] When that's cleared off, cleaned off,
[36:49] you see your true face. You see the
[36:51] soul, which is the same in every single
[36:55] being.
[36:56] That's the one.
[36:59] So we purify, we clean our hearts
[37:04] with these practices.
[37:07] The next line is buddhina.
[37:10] I know that I don't know
[37:12] That's what it means. I don't I I'm
[37:14] ignorant. So I I beg you Hanuman give me
[37:19] strength, give me intelligence, give me
[37:22] wisdom
[37:24] and
[37:26] remove the impurities in my heart.
[37:30] That's the first that's the beginning.
[37:32] That's what we're
[37:34] this is a propitiation. We are asking
[37:36] for something here. We're asking for
[37:38] help
[37:41] and then we go ahead and do the chalisa.
[37:44] So that's the first part. [music]
[37:50] [music]
[37:56] [music]
[38:03] Fore!

[51:26] [singing]
[51:31] [music]
[51:38] [music]
[52:00] That line there's that phrase that we
[52:02] sing between the chalissas
[52:04] mangala morti mutand
[52:09] sakala amangala mula nanda
[52:13] I don't know if it's written down
[52:14] anywhere but it's somewhere
[52:17] um And what it means is Hanuman is the
[52:21] embodiment of everything that's
[52:23] auspicious and and
[52:28] uh good
[52:31] and the the root d the destroyer of the
[52:33] root of all everything that's
[52:36] inospicious and bad for us.
[52:39] Mangala morti mutan son of the wind
[52:44] saka among every single
[52:48] every single thing that that is not
[52:50] helpful for us that is negative in our
[52:52] lives anywhere in our subtle bodies
[53:01] the root destroyer the root remover of
[53:04] everything that it's not helpful for
[53:21] What time is it? What does that mean?
[53:25] >> This is what time it is.
[53:29] >> It's 4:30, 5:30.
[53:31] >> What time is it?
[53:31] >> 10 after 5.
[53:33] >> 20 after
[53:33] >> 10 after 10.
[53:44] Oh, okay. So, the the auction is
[53:48] >> closing
[53:49] >> just about to end.
[53:50] >> Five minutes.
[53:50] >> It ends in five minutes. So, go spend
[53:52] your money
[53:54] if you have any. Um, we'll sing it again
[53:58] tonight
[54:00] once once again. It's a meditation. It's
[54:03] a mantra. It's an invocation. It's a
[54:06] visualization.
[54:08] It's a way of entering into
[54:12] more deeply onto the path and more
[54:15] deeply into your heart.
[54:18] Hanuman is Ramad. He's the messenger of
[54:22] Ram.
[54:24] The connection with with to Ram.
[54:28] It's like in New York there was the 42nd
[54:31] Street shuttle.
[54:33] You get on on the east side, you can't
[54:35] get off until the west side.
[54:37] You get into Hanuman, you can't get off
[54:39] until you're in Ram. Because ultimately,
[54:43] Hanuman and Ram are not different.
[54:47] Actually, in one of the many Ramayanas,
[54:51] uh, Ram asks Hanuman, "How do you see
[54:53] me?" And he says, "When I identify with
[54:56] the body, I serve you. When I identify
[55:00] with the soul, you are the whole and I
[55:03] am a part. But when I know what's really
[55:05] happening, you and I are one.
[55:08] So it's a multi-level thing. But at all
[55:11] times.
[55:14] So one time
[55:16] Maharaji went to Chitrakud which is one
[55:19] of the places where
[55:21] uh Ram and Sitha lived for many years
[55:24] and Lakshman when they were banished
[55:26] from the kingdom
[55:28] and there's a place on the top of a
[55:30] place called Hanumandhara a a big
[55:33] mountain in Chitrakoot which is called
[55:36] Sitha Rosoi Sitta's kitchen
[55:40] and it's there that they lived for a
[55:42] while and she would cooked the food for
[55:44] ramen lakshma
[55:47] and one time Maharaji went up there with
[55:49] Dada Mukerji. Now there's a few books
[55:52] about Maharaji not only miracle of love
[55:55] but Dada wrote two books one is called
[55:58] by His grace and the near and the dear
[56:01] and
[56:03] they're worth reading and of course
[56:05] there's the books that Parvati put
[56:06] together.
[56:08] Um
[56:10] so Dada went there with Maharaji and
[56:14] Maharaji was sitting down there at Sith
[56:16] Rasoi where there's a stream a little
[56:19] coming up out of the mountain and
[56:21] Maharaji said to Dada and Dada after
[56:25] Hanumanji burnt Lanka
[56:27] he came here to cool off
[56:31] by the stream by the water and then Dada
[56:34] told me he said then Maharaji said
[56:39] really kind of just talking to himself.
[56:40] He said, "But Hanumanji was always at
[56:44] peace."
[56:47] Always at peace. Even while he's killing
[56:50] the demons,
[56:52] serving Ram, doing everything, he's
[56:54] always in the right place.
[56:58] And that's where we are headed
[57:00] ourselves.
[57:03] When we reach the place where we are
[57:06] connected to our own souls, our own
[57:09] atma, our own true nature,
[57:13] regardless of what happens in the
[57:14] outside world, we will always be at
[57:17] peace because we're connected deeply to
[57:20] the truth.
[57:22] And Hanaman is one of the many ways
[57:26] to connect that way.
[57:29] So
[57:31] see you later.
[57:33] >> [applause]
