Venerable Thubten Chodron is a Buddhist nun, author and teacher, and the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey, a Buddhist monastic community north of Spokane, Washington. The Abbey is described as the only Tibetan Buddhist training monastery for Western monks and nuns in America.
Born in Chicago in 1950 and raised near Los Angeles, she earned a BA in history from UCLA in 1971. After travelling through Europe, North Africa and Asia for a year and a half, she earned a teaching credential and did postgraduate work in education at the University of Southern California while teaching in the Los Angeles school system. In 1975 she attended a meditation course given by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, then went to their monastery, Kopan, in Nepal to keep studying and practicing. She received novice ordination in 1977 and full bhikshuni ordination in Taiwan in 1986.
She studied and practiced in the Tibetan tradition for many years in India and Nepal under His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tsenzhap Serkong Rinpoche, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche and other Tibetan masters. She has directed the spiritual program at Lama Tzong Khapa Institute in Italy, studied at Dorje Pamo Monastery in France, served as resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Center in Singapore, and was resident teacher at Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle for ten years.
Her teaching stresses applying the Buddha's words in daily life, explained in ways Westerners can understand and practice. She is known for warm, humorous and lucid teachings. She has written many books on Buddhist philosophy and meditation, including Open Heart, Clear Mind and, with the Dalai Lama, the ten-volume Library of Wisdom and Compassion series. She also does Dharma outreach with people in prison, and wrote The Key of Compassion to give incarcerated people a voice.
Worth Knowing
Venerable Thubten Chodron is an American Buddhist nun, author, and teacher who founded and leads Sravasti Abbey, the only Tibetan Buddhist training monastery for Western monks and nuns in the United States. Born in Chicago in 1950, she began her Buddhist training in 1975 after encountering Lama Thubten Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and went on to study under some of Tibetan Buddhism's most respected lineage holders, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. People care about her work because she has spent decades translating Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice into language and frameworks that make genuine sense to Western practitioners—her teachings are famous for being warm, humorous, and deeply grounded in actual application rather than abstract theory. Beyond monasticism, she has become a central figure in the reinstatement of full bhikshuni (nun) ordination for women in the Tibetan tradition, which had lapsed for centuries, breaking significant barriers in a male-dominated lineage. She is also known for her extensive prison outreach work through which she brings Buddhist teachings to incarcerated people, demonstrating that dharma is accessible to anyone regardless of circumstance.
