Worth Knowing
Lucy Draper-Clarke PhD is a facilitator, writer, and researcher-practitioner whose work sits at the intersection of mindfulness education and social activism. With a doctorate in Mindfulness and Teacher Education from South Africa and postgraduate teaching credentials from Oxford, she brings uncommon rigor to the contemplative field—she's not teaching mindfulness as a wellness trend, but as a foundation for what she calls the "compassionate activist," someone engaged in social change while maintaining an ethic of care and reflexivity. She's known for leading retreats across Southern Africa and beyond, while maintaining research connections in both the UK and South Africa. Her 2022 book, *The Compassionate Activist*, crystallizes her core insight: change-makers who want their work to remain sustainable and grounded need contemplative practice, not as escapism but as an anchor. She's built a global student community largely through Insight Timer and her research-action website, drawing practitioners who value the integration of personal practice with structural awareness—a combination that sets her apart from purely wellness-focused teachers.
