Where to Start with Kirsty Lyon: A Beginner's Guide

A note on scope: Kirsty Lyon has no listed albums, books, or catalogued talks. She is a practitioner, so this guide points to what she actually does: her story, her breathwork, her meditation teaching, and her coaching. I won't name specific titles because none are documented.

The Best Entry Point

Start with her trauma-informed breathwork, the work behind her Trauma Informed Breathwork Facilitator certification (Pause Breathwork, via the International Breathwork Foundation). If you can, begin with a single guided session rather than a course or program.

Breathwork is the fastest way to understand what she means by bridging mind and body. Her whole approach rests on that gap, and a session lets you feel it rather than read about it. The trauma-informed framing also matters for a first-timer: it implies choice, pacing, and permission to stop or soften, which makes it a gentler on-ramp than intense breathing styles.

Before the session, read her bio and story. It is short, and it explains everything that follows.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. Her meditation teaching. Once breathwork has given you a felt sense of your body, meditation becomes more approachable. Her meditation is rooted in compassion and acceptance rather than discipline or performance.

2. Somatic and nervous system practices. These are the gentle, body-based tools she uses for nervous system regulation. Treat this as the daily-maintenance layer: small practices that build a sense of safety.

3. Holistic life coaching. Her Holistic Life Coach & Mind Body Practitioner training shapes the one-to-one side of her work. Go here when you want to apply the practices to specific patterns in your life, not just experience them.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect softness, not intensity or hype. Kirsty explicitly says she does not share her story as someone who has it all figured out. She lived with anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, and depression from childhood into her early thirties, then chronic illness that forced her to slow down. Her authority comes from that experience and her training, not from promises.

Expect an emphasis on safety. The goal is to help your nervous system feel safe enough to soften, not to push you into a breakthrough. You may feel calmer, or you may feel tired, tender, or emotional. All of that is considered normal.

Expect to be told, repeatedly, that you are not broken and do not need fixing.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is self-improvement." The most common mistake is treating her work as a program for becoming a better, more lovable version of yourself. Her view is the opposite: healing means bringing awareness, compassion, and acceptance to all parts of you, including the ones you'd like to delete.

"Breathwork should feel dramatic." Some people expect fireworks and assume nothing is happening if they feel little. In a trauma-informed approach, subtle is fine, and pushing is counterproductive.

"Calm means I'm doing it right." Sometimes slowing down surfaces restlessness, sadness, or anxiety. That is the nervous system being heard, not a failure.

"It replaces professional care." Her work is complementary. If you are dealing with OCD, panic, depression, or trauma, it can sit alongside therapy or medical support, not instead of it.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest in a few situations:

  • After burnout or illness, when forced slowing has made your usual coping strategies unavailable.
  • During long-running anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts, especially if you have tried to think your way out and it hasn't worked.
  • After a neurodivergence realization, when you start asking what your nervous system actually needs instead of what it "should" tolerate.
  • When self-criticism has become exhausting, and the idea of being whole rather than fixed sounds like relief.

If you are in a period of high achievement and low rest, it may feel less urgent but more preventative.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Read her bio and story. Write down one sentence about what resonates and one about what you're skeptical of.

Day 2: Do a short guided breathwork session, 10 to 20 minutes, in a quiet place. Keep it gentle and stop if you feel overwhelmed. Afterward, note how your body feels.

Day 3: Rest. Take a walk with no phone and notice your breathing without changing it.

Day 4: Do a short meditation, five to ten minutes, with one aim: to be kind to whatever shows up.

Day 5: Try a somatic practice. Place a hand on your chest or belly, slow your exhale, and notice where you feel tension or ease.

Day 6: Repeat the breathwork session from Day 2. Compare the two experiences, because the second is often easier.

Day 7: Review your notes. Decide whether you want more breathwork, more meditation, or a coaching conversation, and commit to one next step for the following week.

Keep each day small. The point is to teach your nervous system that practice is safe, and consistency matters more than depth.
