Fimo Mitchell is the founder and Executive Director of When The Village Meditates, a nonprofit that creates meditation, yoga and discussion spaces, as well as wellness retreats, centred on racialized and marginalized people in Canada and around the world. Fimo started it in the summer of 2020, hoping to offer a safe and inclusive space where people can journey inward while being part of an empathetic and compassionate community.
Fimo leads daily community meditation online, and guides The Path, a live six-week meditation course on Zoom. Each week brings a new theme, with a daily practice and assignment, and a weekly session of pair sharing and group discussion. A buddy system keeps participants connected. Since 2020, nearly 100 people have walked The Path together.
The work is described as culturally grounded and trauma-aware, built on the belief that people heal and thrive together. It also includes a self-paced audio course, Making Room for Peace, and guided meditations. Fimo and Lead Facilitator Tanja Nachtigall can also be hired for group and corporate sessions, and for in-person or online conferences and retreats.
Worth Knowing
Fimo Mitchell is a meditation teacher, yoga instructor, and the founder and Executive Director of When The Village Meditates, a nonprofit established in summer 2020 that centers the spiritual and wellness needs of Black, racialized, and marginalized communities across Canada and beyond. His work operates at the intersection of social justice and contemplative practice—he understands meditation and yoga not as escapist pursuits but as tools for healing and resilience within community. Since founding the organization, Mitchell has guided nearly 100 students through The Path, a structured six-week meditation course that combines thematic daily practice, weekly group discussion, and peer accountability through a buddy system. He also leads daily community meditation sessions online and offers Making Room for Peace, a self-paced audio course that brings his teaching to people who can't join live sessions. What distinguishes his following is that students and retreat participants aren't there for generic wellness optimization—they're drawn to a teacher who explicitly names the spiritual isolation many racialized people experience and offers meditation as a practice rooted in belonging, not individual transcendence.
