Dr. Christiane Wolf is a physician turned mindfulness and compassion teacher and teacher trainer. She is an authorized Buddhist teacher in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition and teaches classes and retreats worldwide.
She began her professional life as a gynecologist at the University Hospital in Berlin, working clinically and publishing research in gynecological oncology. She had fallen in love with the universality of the Buddhist teachings as a searching teenager. In 2003 she moved with her family to Los Angeles "for just one year" and met Trudy Goodman, who had recently started InsightLA. Goodman encouraged her to train as an MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) teacher, and the two began teaching MBSR together. Wolf stayed and helped grow InsightLA into a large community, which she still calls her spiritual home. She is now a senior teacher and Co-Chair of its Teacher's Council.
She trained as a Mindful Self-Compassion teacher, became an MBSR teacher trainer, and served as head consultant and trainer for the Department of Veterans Affairs' national mindfulness facilitator training. She received teacher transmission from Goodman in 2011 and completed the four-year Dharma/Retreat teacher training through Spirit Rock Meditation Center and the Insight Meditation Society, under Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein.
Her approach blends her medical background with Buddhist and Western psychology and secular mindfulness. It rests on the philosophy "whoever or whatever heals is right," and aims to help people find ease and a home in their own body and mind. She is the author of Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Chronic Pain (first published as Outsmart Your Pain) and co-author, with Dr. Greg Serpa, of A Clinician's Guide to Teaching Mindfulness. Worth Knowing
Dr. Christiane Wolf is a physician-turned-meditation teacher whose unusual hybrid background—she trained as a gynecologist and oncology researcher at the University Hospital Berlin before becoming an authorized Buddhist teacher in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition—gives her teaching distinctive credibility with both secular and spiritual seekers. Her trajectory matters: she wasn't a lifelong devotee who later became a doctor, but a scientist who fell in love with Buddhist teachings as a teenager and eventually reorganized her entire professional life around contemplative practice. She moved from Berlin to Los Angeles in 2003 to train with Trudy Goodman at InsightLA, where she became a senior teacher and remains Co-Chair of the Teacher's Council. Students seek her out because she brings medical rigor, psychological sophistication, and genuine warmth to the dharma—she's not selling transcendence as escape from the body, but as an integration of body, emotion, and spirit. Her particular focus on chronic pain, burnout, and the healing potential of mindfulness-based approaches resonates with people who've found generic "wellness" advice insufficient.
